The next in my series of Eight and Lucie reviews is Immortal Beloved. I usually start with a synopsis but I could find a decent one on line so this is what is on the Big Finish website. 'Theosophy? Ha! Surely you mean theophany? Because we're not talking about real gods here, are we? We're talking about the appearance of gods. Your heavenly powers are a little too mechanical for my liking. And, if I may be so bold, Lord Zeus, your demeanor is not very godlike.' The Doctor and Lucie arrive in what they think to be Ancient Greece and find two lovers on a clifftop about to kill themselves. After they pursuade the couple to spare themselves, they are suddenly surrounded by helicopters full of soldiers. A battle ensues in which the Doctor is almost killed but he and Lucie, along with the two lovers from the clifftop are taken off to a palace where they find a soldier sacrificing himself so that Ares, one of the soldiers who died in the earlier struggle, is able to be 'reborn' into his body. The controller of the society, known as Zeus admits to the group that he isnt actually a god and that they are in fact on a future colony of Earth where he decided along with his wife Hera to create a society based on Greek Myths. It is revealed that the man who was about to kill himself on the ship was the next in line to be 'downloaded' into if you like, but rebelled because he was in love. When Zeus, who turns out to be a bit of a nutjob, threatens to hurt Lucie by torturing her for all eternity by repeatedly ressurecting and torturing her, the Doctor is forced to help him repair his his 'immortality machine'. I dont want to spoil the ending, but when a mind transfer goes wrong it results in a shocking death and a change of the future and the destiny of the planets occupents. This audio is one of my all time favourites. It is brilliant acted (as always) and full of great twists and turns that keep you guessing whats going to happen, yet always surprises. The chemistry between Lucie and the Doctor is brilliant and they truly are a great pairing. The supporting cast are all on fine form also, and it includes Ian McNiece who played Churchill in Series 5 and Elspet Gray who was a Time Lady in Arc of Infinity. This isnt just one of the best Eighth audios, it is one of the best period. It has action, suspence, murder, intrigue and romance in spades and grips you from the very beginning. The audio plays out over two parts, both about 50 minutes long.

Another great review. Ive not heard this one, but now I REALLY want to. I love stuff relating to the greeks and gods and this seems like an awesome twist on some great myths.

Also, since reading this thread I have been puzzling over why this sounds familiar and its kind of similar in premise, from the way you tell it at least, to the Cylons in Battlestar Gallactica
