For discussion/analysis of said episode :)

I don't understand the stick this episode gets. It's not brilliant but it does everything it needs to do to bring back the show after such a long hiatus and introduce the characters with a fun plot. Its easy to rewatch and with the exception of the burping bins is a pretty good story all around. Not keen on the name, but I get why they named it after Rose.

I think viewing the series as a whole this was possibly one of the weaker episodes. It did however contain all the elements fans had come to expect from the show and was light weight enough to bring in new viewers - something possibly an episode like Dalek or The Long Game as an opener wouldn't have - so yes perhaps unfairly rated in the grand scheme of things.

It will never be destined to sweep the board on the award for best ever episode awards day though  :P ;)

I loved Rose when I first watched. I was so pleased to see the Autons. With the exception of the casting of CE and BP I kept totally spoiler free and knew NOTHING of what to expect and I thought it did a brilliant job of reintroducing the show. As Mandy said, it won't be winning any awards, but it was a good introduction for new and old fans alike.

Absolutely hated Mickey throughout though. It took a while for him to grow on me

Agreed that Mickey especially in the first episode was rather annoying!

As I started watching Doctor Who at the start of S2 with Tennant, I hadn't seen this, it was only when I got to the end of S2 I decided I wanted to buy the DVDs... And as a person who had never watched Doctor Who before and didn't know much about the Doctor, Rose was a great episode at introducing new viewers to the Doctor, exploring who he was with Rose, which I thought was pretty clever rather than just creating a 'normal' episode where we wouldn't have much idea what was going on!
Agreed that it wasn't one of the strongest episodes of S1, but in my opinion it was a great episode for introducing a new audience to the show, which was what was perhaps needed after a long break.

I wrote about this episode on another board, so being too lazy to come up with anything new to say, I'll copy it here:

I liked it. It was a good way to start the new show, introducing the concept and characters in a way that wasn't confusing for those new to the show and made the old fans feel right at home straight away. It didn't try to explain too much in one go (unlike the tv movie) and made the show seem new and exciting, while containing enough echoes of the classic series (Autons, no huge redesign for the TARDIS exterior, the Doctor's first line being "Run!") to make it feel like the same show. I also liked the idea of showing the story from the soon-to-be-companion's perspective which, as well as being the perfect way to introduce things to those not already familiar, was very reminiscent of An Unearthly Child.

Sure there have been far better episodes since then, but Rose had a job to do, and it did it perfectly.

This was on tv again tonight and one thing I can never really accept is that Rose doesn't work out that something is
seriously wrong with Mickey the moment she gets back in the car after his wheelie bin attack ::)

I mean...c'mon ;D

How would you ever tell if there was something wrong with Mickey? Even when his head came off it was difficult to be sure.  ;D

I have added a poll to this thread because we are collecting data in order to rank stories. Please could you take a minute and rate this story? :)

You do not need to give a reason for your vote, though obviously feel free to do so as it is a good way of bringing discussion back to older threads :)

I went with a 4, for what it's worth.

I gave this one a 4. I know lots of people seem to take issue with this story, and perhaps in comparison with others it is a lot weaker, but this episode had everything riding on its back and it had so much to do that I think that this time it was ok to let the greater story fall by the wayside somewhat. It set up the show, set up the Doctor, introduced a new companion an old villain and a new format and still managed to get millions of people hooked all over again. How can you fault that?

I suppose after what Saber said its hard to give this story a hard time, but I have always really enjoyed it anyway so I went with a 4. Autons are amazing, so good to see them there. CE was introduced brilliantly, as was Rose and Jackie. Mickey was, is and always will be an idiot though and he is probably at his worst in this episode, which is why I took the point off

Gave it a 5. Had never seen any Who before but I thought it was an amazing episode to introduce a new audience to the show. :)

Dame Roger expresses my thoughts perfectly - Rose was a masterpiece of "introductory" television. As a life long DW fan, I recognized the show I loved, and my friend who saw DW she thought it was a brilliant story.

RTD's episode 1 = Job Done!

I went with a four for this. It wasn't a particularly great story but it was a good first episode for what was essentially a new series. I wasn't particularly taken with Rose (the character) and I didn't like Mickey at all but everything else was pretty good

Absolutely spot on!! I couldnt agree more. A 4 from me too!

3 from me. Its a decent enough story with some nice Auton usage, but plot is a little thin on the ground. It does the job it was meant to though I suppose

I gave this story a 5. I love it. It did everything that it needed to to bring the show into the 21st century and it had a good plot with Autons. Spot on.

I went with a 4 because I think it does a good job of reintroducing the show for the 21st century & there is a lot about it I like. Plastic & real Mickey annoy me enough to knock a whole point off though.

I gave it a two. Nothing personally against this, but if I'd seen it first, I'm not sure I wouldn't continued watching Doctor Who. It did what it needed to and I don't have a problem with it persay, but the next episode is just a vast improvement.

I only really started cringing on this one (when showing a friend) when the plastic trash can and blob at the end did their thing.

But nine and Clive were great.

The Nestene was fine for me, but I agree with you about the big. It just looked silly. Plastic Mickey and Clive were also low points for me. Clive was ok as a character, but the actor who played him just irritates me in everything I see him in.
