For the discussion/analysis of the episode :)

I hate it. Well, I don't hate it. There are some great elements to the story. Like Rose and Ten playing with the queen trying to get her to say 'We are not amused' and Rose's quote about how Jackie would be fighting the wolf with her bare hands to get at the crystal always makes me laugh, but generally I don't like werewolf stories and although the monks at the beginning looked impressive, it didnt really make much sense why they went all ninja and red. It did a good job to set the Torchwood thing up though, which is what it was meant to do I guess. Not one of my favourites from the series though.

Happened to catch this on some Sky channel or other the other night. I have it on dvd, but it's just not really one I'd ever think to watch, mostly because I'd practically forgotten it existed. And, on rewatching it's not difficult to see why. It's by no means terrible, nowhere near the worst in that series (although since the same series produced Fear Her and Love And Monsters that's no huge achievement) and isn't without merit: Pauline Collins is superb as Queen Victoria, the story rattles along cheerfully enough, and I really liked the nice little touch of the Doctor choosing the name of a former companion when asked who he was - the perfect example of how to please the fans of the classic series without confusing those who aren't as familiar with it.
But somehow it's just unmemorable. There's nothing really special about it. It fills what would otherwise have been a rather confusing and annoying gap inbetween episodes one and three, and does so perfectly unobjectionably, but I doubt I'll be getting the dvd off the shelf any time soon for another watch.

Didnt Pauline Collins turn down the role of Polly or something like that?

I think the plot here is fine but I just don't like werewolf stories, so if that element was replaced with something else I would think a lot more highly of this story. The ninja monks at the beginning looked kind of cool on first watch, but after that I just kind of think they are out of place, or at least that sequence is

Pauline Collins played a character called Samantha in The Faceless Ones, which was Ben and Polly's last story, although they actually spent most of it missing.  She was Jamie's opposite number for the story, and they worked very well together.  Apparently, the producer wanted to make Samantha the next companion, but she turned it down.

Love it, love it, love it!
It's almost pitch perfect classic Who in my opinion.
take out the slo-mo kung Fu monks (anyone else think that bit was like one of those old BBC advert stings like the wheelchair basketball etc?) and it's there.

Pauline Collins was great, DT got to be Jamie (we'll skip Rose's accent), the supporting cast was great and special mention to Derek Riddell who was fantastic as Sir Robert!

Plus, it was the birth of Torchwood.

It's never one I actively seek out, but every time I watch it, I reallly enjoy it. I gave it a four - special effects, acting and story all very good :)

1 from me. I hate the story, I hate werewolves and I hate the monks. I do however think it contains one of the funniest lines from NuWho when Rose sees the crystal and says if Jackie were there she would be fighting the wolf off with her bare hands. I can totally see her doing it too ;D

I too am giving this a 4, I quite enjoy rewatching the episode, not too sure why. It's just different and I like it. :)

This one gets a three from me. There were some great points to it and some really weak points. Pauline Collins was great though and I loved the classic references

Two on this one from me. There are a couple of good aspects to it but on the whole this is probably one of my least favourites from the series

I gave this one a four. I quite liked the concept and thought that Pauline Collins was great. There were a couple of bits I wasn't too keen on, like the monks, but all in all not a bad story by any stretch

I gave it four.  I thought the kung fu monks were ridiculous, but I liked the concept of the werewolf, I thought Pauline Collins was great (she didn't have a German accent, as she should, but then nor did Judi Dench when she played Victoria) and I enjoyed the interplay between the Doctor and Rose.

I gave it a three. Almost a four. I liked the reference to Jamie, the forethought of the queen's husband, the explanation of the royal family being werewolves and the diamond cutting, but at the same time, it just didn't have the extra flair that brings it top marks. I can't think of anything particularly wrong, it just wasn't my kind of tone.
