Title: Eldrad
Post by: Exterminate on July 06, 2011, 01:28:57 pm
What a great character. I would love to see her return in the new series, though I doubt she ever would.

For the longest time, even though the Doctor refers to her as 'her', I was convinced that the character was played by a man.

For me, the downside to the character was the awful male portrayal in episode 4. It was like he was trying to channel Brian Blessed or something. He got very loud and VERY hammy. After the brilliant and subtle performance from the female version, to end the character with the shouty man was a bit of a dissapointment which is a huge shame.

They should definately make an Eldrad figure too. Her costume was awesome and it would look great.

I'm with you Ex, Eldrad was miles better as a woman than a man. The costume was awesome & the performance was much more subtle & believable. The man was, as I said elsewhere, simply naff. After the brilliant performance put in before it was a total let down for the character - he became a joke. Shame really.

I definately agree about the male version. The performance was a bit much after what had come before and it sort of spoiled it.

I also agree about the figure. Character Options needs to make that happen.

Male eldrad was definately channelling Brian Blessed a bit too much for my liking. It wasn't the character change that particularly bothered me, just that guys portrayal which wasn't very good

I thought it was a man at first too. The only thing that convinced me it wasn't is that something tells me that 1970's BBC1 primetime probably wasn't the place to invest in a little transvestitism. Or was it??? Hmmmm ;D

As far as the performances go, I can say I paid much attention to how shouty the guy was. I just assumed that is how he should have been and just watched along. It will probably stand out more once I watch again though.

The female version of Eldrad was absolutely brilliantly realised imo, but the male version was too loud and shouty and acted dreadfully. They should have just left it as the female version

As Sarah said, "I quite liked her, but I couldn't stand him."

It was the same actor who played Omega (Stephen Thorne) - the over-the-topness worked with him, but it just seemed silly with Eldrad.  I think that's partly because of the contrast with the subtler version and partly because he didn't really have time to establish himself as a character.  In Thorne's defence, apparently the two of them never actually met, so he didn't get the chance to coordinate what he was doing with what she'd done.

I suppose if they didn't get a chance to brief each other on how the other was going to play it then it might go some way to explaining why it was so different, but he was still a bit too shouty for my liking. The female version however I thought was brilliant
