Title: Mestor
Post by: Saber on July 18, 2011, 03:12:59 pm
Story aside, I do think that Mestor was perhaps one of the worst villains to rear its head in Doctor Who. It's up there for me with the Slitheen and the Abzorbaloff. As well as just being generally bad, the costume left a lot to be desired and when just compared to other aliens of the season, like The Myrka, it just seems even worse an effort. The guy in the suit must have been glad to have his face covered.

I didn't like him. I was just saying in another thread how I think the voice didn't suit the visual of what we were seeing on screen and I found that quite offputting.

I found him pretty awful too.  Quite apart from the other reasons, a lot was made of him being a giant slug, yet there was nothing about his behaviour or movement (what there was of it) that remotely suggested a slug.

As a random piece of information, he was played by the same actor who played Captain Hart in The Sea Devils.  How are the mighty fallen.

Yea he really was lame, and as Saber said in comparison to some other villains we got in Season 21, it just makes him look worse. I think everything, from the voice to the look to the actions of the character were all wrong. Budget obviously wouldn't allow for something more state of the art, but sometimes I wonder what was going through the minds of the designers when they stepped back and said 'yes, that's exactly what we're going for', because surely it didn't look good to anyone

Absolutely awful. I can't compare him to the rest of the seasons villains like other have done because I havent seen them all, but by any standards this was bad. If you don't have the budget to make something decent then why not just make the baddie humanoid or something?

I thought he was funny and I thought he was silly, but I definately didn't think he was scary or threatening, which is exactly what a DW villain should be. Even ones that you can take a little less seriously should have that air of menace about them. This thing was just bad

Yes, this was the series that started with the Myrka and finished with Mestor.  There were a couple of great stories in the series, but the only monsters to write home about were the reused ones.

Couldn't quite believe it when the Doctor said Mestor was half slug - I was getting a kind of insectoid vibe, but slug ... no!

Yea he definately didn't look like a slug. Looked more like an owl with antenna

I suppose he did a bit yeah  :)

He was cross eyed too - that made me laugh. I mean surely someone noticed that when they put the mask together - unless it was deliberate  :P

Rubbish. Totally rubbish. Definately one of, if not the worst classic DW villain ever

I think that there was a lot of potential here with the character that was never lived up to because of the really bad costume and some bad acting. They made him a little bit rubbish in the writing too, to be honest, but I think that there was definate potential with the character
