The Doctor In The TARDIS

Rose Marion Tyler was the first known companion of the ninth incarnation of the Doctor, and also the first companion of the tenth incarnation. She was sealed off in a parallel world, before returning to her own, only to ultimately be returned to the parallel world by the Doctor, along with another version of himself. She shared a close romantic relationship with both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, eventually living out the rest of her life in the parallel universe with the duplicate Tenth Doctor.

Rose was a sweet, gentle and sympathetic young woman, quick to adapt despite being thrown into strange events. She had her mother's acerbic wit and was not hesitant to use it. She fell easily into the role of the Doctor's latest companion and was brave facing various alien threats. She cared deeply about the Doctor, although she originally denied any sexual or romantic feelings towards him despite indications to the contrary. In what seemed their final meeting on the beach, she told the Doctor that she loved him; he began to reply, but only got out the words "Rose Tyler" before he was cut off.

However, besides Jack Harkness and River Song , she was the only recent companion of the Doctor's willing to kill the Doctor's enemies. Others, such as Martha Jones and Donna Noble were much more reluctant and Donna only killed once when it was the only way to save Agatha Christie. Rose was willing to call the Doctor out when he was wrong. When the Doctor brushed aside the danger that Jackie was in when faced with a Slitheen, Rose reminded him the woman he was discussing was her mother. She was horrified the Doctor would allow the Gelth to use human corpses as a vessel for their consciousness. The Doctor's failure to listen to Rose's human plea of respect for their dead led to at least two deaths when the Gelth proved to be malicious.

Rose had a jealous streak when it came to the Doctor. She and the Doctor's former companion, Sarah Jane Smith, traded barbs over who was the "best companion" but they became good friends afterwards, and happily greeted each other at their reunion on the Crucible. Rose was willing to sacrifice herself for the Doctor or the common good. When faced with the choice of dying or saving the world, Rose instructed the Doctor to do what he had to do to save everyone else. This was a common theme in Rose's story; despite the risk of plunging into the Void and an eternity of nothingness, she let go of a magnetic hold to set a lever right and seal the Cybermen and Daleks away from her world. It was only the sudden appearance of her father from the parallel world that saved her from that fate, but ultimately led to her separation from the Doctor.

For me, this was the last story before Rose started to become unbearable. I loved her in series 1 but they really did a number on her character in series 2 and I think this story was the turning point. Perhaps it was seeing the Doctor fall in love with a woman he'd known for a few hours or something, I don't know, but after this story she just got more and more annoying until she eventually left. For me, anyway!

I found Rose odd in this. Just a story earlier she had been getting all jealous over SJS when she really had nothing to worry over, then in this when she really should be concerned, she doesn't seem all that bothered.

I definately agree about her going downhill in S2 but I thought she was alright in this. I agree with Saber though that her actions here seemed a bit unlikely considering how she reacted to Sarah Jane in the previous episode, but you never know. Maybe she experienced some growth or something?

Ahh I really loved Rose, and this episode was no different.

The only thing I didn't like about Rose was how much thicker her accent seemed to be when she returned in S4 (as though she was speaking through her teeth more, if you get me?)

She was a tough act to topple from my favourite companion, but Donna managed it :)

^^ Rose' return in S4, or more specifically her mouth and its total lack of movement, was one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen. It was like she had botox the night before or something.

I like Rose usually, but I didn't like where her character ended up towards the last few episodes of S2. In this story though I thought she was fine and was as good as she had been in S1.

I agree with PP that this was the last story where Rose was a great companion. I still liked her throughout but her story and changes to her character started to become to heavy on the romance side of the things. Her constant mentions and reappearances after she left also didn't help the character and she started to seem annoying. In this story though I thought she was ok.

I thought Rose was great in this story. She was a bt up and down throughout this particular season but in this story she was consistent and played really well so nothing to complain about.

I've never been particularly taken with Rose. She's ok I guess but once Martha came along I liked her more and then Donna came along and was better again and the further we got from Rose' story the more I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. She was ok in this story but did nothing particularly great or memorable here.
