Mickey Smith was Rose Tyler's boyfriend and later briefly a companion of the Doctor. He helped defend Earth against both the threats of the Cybermen and the New Dalek Empire. He later married Martha Jones, another former companion of the Doctor.

At first, Mickey was a bumbling coward; His capture by the Autons, and initial trip in the TARDIS, left him greatly shaken. When he met the Doctor again, he displayed much resentment towards him. Already, though, he was braver than he had been; He tried to hold off a Slitheen to give Jackie time to escape. Despite these changes, Mickey still displayed clumsiness, like his pratfall while trying to capture Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen. Although still unwilling to travel in the TARDIS, Mickey changed his mind, inviting himself along, unwilling to just be "technical support" (or the Tin dog) any more.

Mickey reached a turning point when he met Ricky and witnessed his death at the hands of the Cybermen. Shown a version of himself that was braver, he rose to the challenge. He played a crucial part in the the Cymbermen's defeat and decided to help rid the alternate Earth of their remnants. When the Cybermen found a way to cross over to the other Earth, Mickey was the first to pursue them. When all of reality was threatened, Mickey again crossed Earths, this time with Jackie in tow. They faced Daleks and Mickey held their creator, Davros, at gunpoint. Choosing to return home, Mickey found love with Martha Jones, and the two became freelance alien hunters. Far from his original cowardly ways, Mickey now actively pursued dangerous aliens.

I've never particularly rated Mickey, but I found him really, really annoying in this story. I can't put my finger on exactly why, I guess its a collection of many things, but I just really didn't like him in this.

I didn't mind him too much. I'm not a big fan of the character but he didn't seem any more annoying in this, particularly.

I really can't stand Mickey, so it's surprising he doesn't ruin this episode for me.

I don't mind Mickey.  He wouldn't figure all that highly on my list of favourite companions, and I didn't like him in Rose, but I quite enjoyed the three-way vibe he brought when he joined the crew.  And the best line in the story was spoken to him 8)

The thing that annoys me most about Mickey is how pathetic he is, which wasn't made any better when he finally grew a pair because then he was just obnoxious. He wasn't at his worst in this story but at the same time he did nothing to make him likeable either.

Mickey the idiot. Never a truer word spoken!

I was really worried that Rory was going to end up being a copy of Mickey and I would have hated that. I really don't like the character. I think Noel Clarke plays him brilliantly and in his S4 and the Specials cameos I think he is fine and likeable, but everything about him in the first two series just irritates me.

I'm not a fan, but I can't really say he was particularly bad or worse than normal here. He wasn't given too much to do and he wasn't exactly a focus so he was easy enough to watch.

I thought he would have more defenders though tbh.

I'm sort of on the fence with Mickey. He isn't a particularly great character but at the same time I think he gets more stick than is fair. He is often overlooked because he was just part of Rose' baggage but he had some good growth as a character and was always played really well by Noel Clarke
