Title: The Tenth Doctor
Post by: Tardis-Console on November 17, 2011, 01:56:54 pm
When I got into Doctor Who, it was Matts first story and I loved it straight away. When series 5 was over I decided to go back to the beginning and start with Eccleston and work back up to series 5 (which I sort of updated on here in various threads). One thing everyone said was about how excellent ten was and how he would blow my mind etc, but he just never did. It took me a while to warm to CE but I loved him in the end and I thought DT was great, but I still even now don't see what the fuss was about. For the most part his emo agro personality was quite annoying and by the end of his run it had gotten really bad. His outstretched hand and glary 'I'm so serious' face just felt really over the top. I still like Ten, I'm just not a fangirl.

However, despite the fact that he does exactly all those things in this story, for me it is one of the rare times when it feels really necessary and fits in well, and in this story I truly think he is great. I don't know if it is the writing or the acting, but in most stories it feels a bit overdone, but in this story I think it works well and so I can't really fault the guy on that.

See I'm the opposite. I think Ten (as he did more often than not) overdoes the emo-ness in this story and it's so offputting. I loved him when he was current, but after MS took the role DT just pales in comparison and I find far more faults with him.

I feel the same. I used to think he was awesome but now seeing Matt Smith, watching back (and possibly reading comments on here) I like Tennant less and less.

I will third this. Used to love him as the Doctor, but now I just find him grating

Saying that though, in this story he isn't too bad. Series 4 and the specials were where he became really annoying

I still think Tennant is great in the role and he really helped elevate the show, but I don't always like his performances and he isn't near the top of my favourite Doctors list. That's not a bad thing though because I think every Doctor has been excellent. It's the Ten fans that bug me more. Them and Ianto fans. The crazy ones specifically.

I am one of those people who loved Ten while he was on screen, but since MS took over I just find more and more things to dislike about his portrayal. Matt seems to bring the fun in even when he is at his most serious. He has an ability to go from one emotion to another in the blink of an eye, but Ten, especially in his later years, seemed to spend too much of his time in an angsty aggression.

I think it gets too easy to compare Doctors sometimes, especially given how different they all are. On his own merits Ten was an amazing Doctor and Tennant always put in full, emotional performances. Sometimes I think the writing called for him to be a bit more dramatic than was always necessary but there is no question about how good he was. He isn't my favourite Doctor and his performances don't always sit well with me, but I don't think he ever put in a bad performance.

It's interesting to see how many people say that the current Doctor has made them change their ideas of the previous. I thought Ten was great. Not my favourite but also not really comparable to MS either
