Title: Things influenced by Dr. Who
Post by: Blazin Goliath on March 13, 2012, 06:12:01 am
So, my friend and I were discussing movies and such that might have adapted ideas from DW, and I thought it was an interesting idea, and wanted your opinions :)

Easy enough idea for a thread.
For example- Darth Vader. Almost completely sure his design came from the Cybermen.

I can't say I've ever seen anything and thought 'that must be based off of Doctor Who'. More often than not I see things In Doctor Who that I think have been based on things outside the show. Most of the classic series is riddled with retellings and plot points from movies, shows and books.

The classic series featured both retellings of older stories (starting with The Daleks, which was closely based on The Time Machine, though more on the 1960 film than the book) but there've been several concepts which it used at least before more famous examples:

Cyborgs in the 1960s (both Daleks and Cybermen)
The generational space-ark in 1966
Space Bugs that lay there eggs inside humans several years before Alien
Egyptian gods as aliens in 1975 (after Von Daniken, but long before Stargate)
A VR environment called The Matrix in 1976

The books and TV show Outlander, for sure. A character called Jamie, who's a bit amorous, mid 1700's, Scotland and, of course, time travel. The author even cited Doctor Who as an inspiration.
