Title: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!!
Post by: poprockgeek on October 05, 2010, 09:34:02 pm
Just found this on Memory Alpha (yes I am a Star Trek fan as well)

http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Doctor_Who

It kind of got me thinking about other places I've seen or heard references to DW on TV or in films. This thread is the result. I thought it could be a place where we come to have those OMG moments that I know I feel when I notice DW reference somewhere unexpected.

So we've got the Star Trek ones in the link ...

Also coming quickly to mind was Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory (Season 1 Ep 7) who claims to get up every Saturday morning at the same time to watch Doctor Who on BBC America. On this occasion he can't watch the beginning because Penny is asleep on the sofa and he says 'I'll watch the last 24 minutes of Doctor Who, although at this point it's more like Doctor Why Bother.'

Anyone else got any? I'm sure you have. Share below  :D

I'm not sure if this counts but our very own RTD wrote a wonderful series called Queer as Folk before he joined Doctor Who and that was shamelessly littered with Doctor Who references. Additionally, another 'before they were famous' was a really funny show by Little Britain stars Matt Lucas & David Walliams called Rock Profiles which, again (because Walliams is a massive Who fan) featured loads of little DW references.

Oh yes they count - I haven't seen either but I will be going off to do a bit of research into them now  :)

Queer as Folk will make you smile as it really echoes Rusty's style of writing. Its a bit 18+ in places but it also it really is funny and touching.

I think I can cope with 18+  ;)

Just found this link that covers some of those DW refs in Queer as Folk if anyone fancies a look http://nzdwfc.tetrap.com/archive/tsv60/queerasfolk.html

Poprockgeek that is a brilliant find :) I've thought of another Who reference - I am sure there is one tucked away in The Simpsons

Bound to be at least one mention/reference in The Simpsons - fairly certain I've seen a Simpsonised version of the Fourth Doctor.

My desktop is Simpsonised Eleven & co but they haven't featured on the show (yet!)  ;)

Warehouse 13 and Eureka both mentioned the show this year.

Ooh is that Season 2 of Warehouse 13? I'm only 2 episodes into S2 so it will give me something to listen out for. I did clock Claudia saying 'Allons-y' in episode 2 though  :)

This'll give me something to do when I'm watching TV in the evenings. It'll certainly make reviewing more fun :D

I've actually already been doing it on Twitter (not just with DW though) - don't know why I didn't think of putting it on here before.

Just watching an old episode of Inspector George Gently (Gently in the Night) on Alibi and during an interview a suspect was asked to list what was on the TV as he gave watching TV as his alibi - guess what was on peeps? Yes you've guessed it - Doctor Who.

Reminds me that in the episode that was on BBC1 on Sunday Sept 26th (Gently Evil) a family are shown watching what is clearly a Dalek episode of DW & the daughter/granddaughter mentions the Daleks again later when she is interviewed.

:D

@poprockgeek (sorry, I can't quote on my phone) The mention on W13 is the Allonsy one, on Eureka it was Zane asking if they wanted the TARDIS blueprints while he was hacking a top secret site...like the TARDIS would have blueprints lol

Title: Re: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!!
Post by: poprockgeek on October 06, 2010, 10:13:42 pm
Ah cool. A friend of mine suggested I watch Eureka so it's on my never ending list - might just have jumped up it a bit due to a DW reference  ;)

Title: Re: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!!
Post by: Mind_Robber on October 06, 2010, 10:13:58 pm
Is there even enough paper in all time-space to blueprint the TARDIS? haha :D

Title: Re: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!!
Post by: poprockgeek on October 06, 2010, 10:16:55 pm
And surely by the time you'd got it all down on paper it would've all changed anyway!!!  ;)

Good point :D

I think the lesson in all this is that even if you had all the paper in existence, you could never blueprint the TARDIS

In the show "Better off Ted" theres a Dalek in the warehouse:

There was quite a good sketch on Harry And Paul last night where it showed what Doctor Who would have been like if it was made on ITV in the 70s with the cast of On The Buses.
Unfortunately it was the only remotely amusing thing in the show, so I don't think I'll be bothering to see if they use the idea again next week.

"Saturday Night Live"- one sketch had Paris Hilton dressing up with various sci-fi inspired accessories including a Fourth Doctor scarf.

Of course, there are all those "Dead Ringers" sketches I saw on YouTube with costumed impressions and spoofs of the various Doctors, and Torchwood.

There were a few references to Doctor Who on the BBC's "Life on Mars," fitting in with the theme of different eras meeting!

As I have no broadband atm I'm watching some stuff I have on the hard drive to see me through the cold evenings.  I went back to Leveridge last night (kinda like a poor mans Hustle, but with sexy lawyer from Angel, whose name I forget, in).  One of the team was complaining how slow the internet service was at the place they were staking out and he said that it took him over an hour to download the latest Doctor Who ep.  Made me smile :D

Ah the criminally cancelled Better Off Ted - utter brilliance

As for Who references in shows:

In the Knight Rider remake Halloween episode, Billy dresses as Captain Jack (technically he refers to Torchwood but close enough!)
Doctor Where on Maths Trail
Lots of comedy sketches - the Spike Milligan Dalek one, Dr Eyes from End of Part One, The Lenny Henry one, the Real McCoy cybermen one, probably 20% of John Culshaw's output(!) and I think Dr Emu from Emu's Broadcasting Company

Slight hijack, but Leverage is a great show.
I wouldn't call it a poor man's Hustle, but that's maybe cos I've never watched Hustle - other than Napoleon Solo I didn't like the cast.

PS @Sigryn - it's Christian Kane aka Lindsey "evil hand" McDonald - guy is a legend.

Yeah Torchwood is more than close enough, but as Capt Jack has frequently been in DW too it's a double win  :)

It was season 6. When Spike found out he could hurt Buffy. Andrew, Jonathan and Spike were waiting for the results on Spikes chip. Andrew was trying, and failing, to make small talk. He aslo references Red Dwarf. Two of my fave shows mentioned in one scene. I was in heaven lol. :P

That's it, I have a crap memory for names I'm afraid, lol.

There was another Who mention in the episode I watched this afternoon, when looking through his fake ID cards that he had on him the lead actor said the ones he had were Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy or Tom Baker  ;D

This one is slightly more random (but I started the thread so I can tweak the rules  :P ) - this is from a concert though it has had a TV broadcast.

In her Showgirl Homecoming Tour late 06/early 07 Kylie Minogue had this section:

Act 7: Dance of the Cybermen
"Space Prequel" (Instrumental Interlude)
"Can't Get You Out of My Head" (contains excerpts from "Rise of the Cybermen" along with elements of the "Doctor Who Theme")
"Light Years"(contains excerpts from "Turn It Into Love" along with elements of the TARDIS dematerializing)

The dancers costumes were styled after the Cybermen (though mainly the headwear). I found these 2 vids - one for each song if you want to check it out (don't feel you have to - I know Kylie is not to everyone's taste!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6QXLFSo3xY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hToV9DWf2dk

Love that she showed love for DW even before she appeared in the show.

Well that was the reason she got the gig. Her tour manager (or someone like that) is DW obsessed, and joked to RTD about getting her a part, and it went from there

In the most recent episode of Family Guy, there was another DW reference.

Peter wanted to bring his owl to his in-laws. Lois said no. He asked his mother-in-law if they could have accommodated an owl she said yes. Peter says to Lois:

"You owe Doctor Hoo an apology!"

Lol

He wasn't sufficiently geeky about it, though.  He claimed to have seen every episode which, unfortunately, he couldn't have.

Incidently, there was a reference in the article to both shows having a planet Vulcan.  At one time (I think off the top of my head it was late 19th or early 20th century) there was believed to be a planet inside the orbit of Mercury that was given the name Vulcan.  It was seen a few times, then disappeared, so maybe it was an asteroid being pulled into the sun, or something.

Despite having watched a million times, I discovered last night on a rewatch of Little Britain series one that in some of the sketches there is a character called Michael Craze who is a talent scout who has to deal with a desperado called Matthew Waterhouse who is always coming up with stupid inventions and ideas in a bid to get noticed.

Michael Craze of course is the name of the actor who played companion Ben Jackson and Matthew Waterhouse is the name of the actor who played Adric

Ok I know I created this thread for film & TV refs to DW but I've already tweaked the rules slightly to include concerts/music so I'm bending them again because ...

I was reading book 3 of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series 'The Well of Lost Plots' this morning & stumbled across this on page 75:

'You have centaurs here?'
'And satyrs, troglodytes, chimeras, elves, fairies, dryads, sirens, Martians, leprechauns, goblins, harpies, aliens, Daleks, trolls - you name it.'

I was already loving this series, but now I love it even more  :D

I'll have to iplayer that - don't watch HIGNFY anymore.

Little exchange that popped up on p 137 of 'First Among Sequels' by Jasper Fforde:

"'And you are here now ... because?'
'Landen said he'd videotape Dr Who* for me, & the Daleks are my favourite.'
'I'm more into Sontarans myself,' said Miles.
'Humph!' said Joffy. 'It's what I'd expect from someone who thinks Jon Pertwee was the best Doctor.'
Landen & I stared at him, unsure of whether we should agree, postulate a different theory - or what.
'It was Tom Baker,' said Joffy ending the embarassed silence. Miles made a noise that sounded like 'conventionalist', & Landen went to get the tape."

That's the second time I've noticed Fforde directly reference the show & I've noticed other things that could be nods to it. Starting to suspect he may be a fan  :)

Oh, and if you're interested it transpires that the recording was of 'Remembrance of the Daleks.'

*Not me mispelling the title of DW - that's how it's written in the book.

As a regular Radio 4 listener <cough>YESI'MGETTINGOLD<cough> I've noticed that there's rarely a day goes by without someone, on something, mentioning DW.  Must be the most frequent indirectly plugged thing on there.

The award-winning afternoon play, 'Every Child Matters', which they repeated a few weeks back, had a scene where a disgraced social worker is talking to her former colleague (and lover), and he mentions if only they could turn back time...and she says if he could do that, he'd be Cher...and he says no, he'd be the Doctor and take her away somewhere in the TARDIS.

And I laughed when there was a reference in The Archers where Jill Archer was in the newsagents telling someone how much Freddie (Pargeter, her grandson) liked a particular unnamed magazine 'because it's about his favourite TV show - he loves the robots and monsters....' they didn't say which TV show but, well, you know. ;D

There have been various things on Woman's Hour (I think) and some other programs...can't remember, but I'll pop on here if I hear any more.

Another Radio 4 mention today.  You and Yours was looking at the Harry Potter movie and talking to some of the crew who worked on it, and they asked one of the costume guys how he got started, and he said his first job was on Doctor Who.  Pity I didn't catch his name, could have looked him up...

SFX Magazine are looking to collect references to Doctor Who on TV or the radio that occur between Saturday 9th & Friday 15th July 2011. They want:

• Jokes involving Doctor Who in sit coms and comedy shows (we can almost guarantee one in The Now Show every week)
• Casual references by presenters to, “It’s just like A TARDIS.”
• Mentions of Doctor Who in dramas
• Questions about Doctor Who in quiz shows
• Any random plays of Doctorin’ The TARDIS on music radio
• Use of the TARDIS sound effect when something needs to appear out of thin air…
• Random use of the Doctor Who music

Full information & details of where to send any references can be found here: http://www.sfx.co.uk/2011/07/06/doctor-who-spotting-week/

And don't forget to tell us if you see/hear any too  :)

Two mentions in two consecutive episodes of One Foot In The Grave the other day. One where Margeret described something as looking like an alien from Doctor Who and the other was when Victor had a glass accidently glued to his forehead and said he looked like a deformed Dalek

Today's Radio 4 afternoon play was 'Best Interests'.  It was about what happens when a young man collapses at a tube station, gets taken into hospital, and decisions about his care turn awkward because it turns out he has learning difficulties...but he's also a Doctor Who fanatic, and there are a lot of familiar references.   It's still on BBC iplayer for the next week if anyone's interested in listening.

There was also a reference the other day to an art exhibition in an ex-nuclear bunker in Bosnia, and someone described said bunker as being like the TARDIS.

You can't escape it, can you? :)

Bit oblique this one but a DW reference nonetheless.

Brisingr, page 204:

"Arya signed a stop to the sentence she had been writing on the ground. Bending over, Eragon read, Adrift upon the sea of time, the lonely god wanders from shore to distant shore, uphlding the laws of the stars above.
'What does it mean?'
'I don't know,' she said, & smoothed out the line with a sweep of her arm."

She returns to randomly writing on the ground again on p 207:

"With a flourish, she completed the latest sentence she had been working on. He tilted his head & sidled closer in order to decipher the glyphs she had inscribed. They read: The trickster, the riddler, the keeper of the balance, he of many faces who finds life in death & fears no evil; he who walks through doors.
'What prompted you to write this?'
'The thought that things are not what they appear.' "

I've got to admit if I'd just read it without knowing I probably would have missed it. Christopher Paolini makes it clear in his acknowledgements though:

"Also for those who understood the reference to a 'lonely god' when Eragon & Arya are sitting around the campfire, my only excuse is that the Doctor can travel everywhere, even alternate realities.
Hey, I'm a fan too!"

"But he was being stupid, too, because if you look at the pictures you can see that the fairies look just like fairies in old books & they have wings & dresses & tights & shoes, which is like aliens landing on the earth & being like Daleks from Doctor Who or Imperial Stormtroopers from the Death Star in Star Wars or little green men in cartoons of aliens."

In Season 8 Episode 4 of Grey's Anatomy, there is a patient who was crushed and lost his ear because TARDIS's signed by RTD (but had the Moff-era Doctor Who logo on ::) - silly Greys producers) were being given to the first 50 or so people at this convention, and he was caught up in the rush.

Quite funny and cool seeing the little TARDIS in Greys!

Reading Justin Langer's autobiography (Australian Test Cricketer for those who are unfamiliar) he says that his old dressing room "Was just like Doctor Who's TARDIS".

He might have over 7500 test runs and be part of one of the greatest cricket teams of all time but I think someone should tell him that it is "The Doctor's TARDIS" not "Doctor Who's TARDIS".

I hope someone got sacked for that.

Right back near the start of this thread it was mentioned that Zane offered to find TARDIS blueprints whilst hacking a top secret website in a Season 4 episode of Eureka.

A few eps on from that he mentions our favourite blue box again:

Zane: Didn't know you were building a TARDIS house.
Jo: A what?
Zane: Big on the inside, tiny on the… never mind.

I think the character may be a fan  :)

There were at least two DW references in the fourth book of Eragon "The Inheritance".

The first was Solembum saying : "I have seen things that defy belief: whirlwinds of light spinning in caverns deep below the ground, men who age backward, stones that speak, and shadows that creep. Rooms that are bigger on the inside than the outside..."

And the second near the end. Angela i knitting a hat (or at least a thing looking like a hat in blue and white) and when Eragon asks her what the runes on it mean, there is this piece of conversation: "'It's nice. The blue is pretty. But what do the runes say?' 'Raxacori - Oh, nevermind. It wouldn't mean anything to you anyway.'"

Also, but I don't know it for sure, because I only read the german translation and couldn't find the original sentence, but I think some mysterious woman answered the question who she is with: "A stranger passing through" which also reminds me of DW.

You'll find loads of places online where there are links between the two. Many people have speculated/theorised that one of the characters, Angela I think, is intended to be an old companion of the Doctor, or something like that. I think the author is a fan

Just getting stuck into the latest Thursday Next novel, The Woman Who Died A Lot by Jasper Fforde and he's referencing DW again.

First up a pic at the front of the book shows Thursday's daughter Tuesday with what is unmistakeably Eleven's sonic screwdriver in her pocket.

Secondly on page 267 the result of an experiment to uncover more about Dark Reading Matter (read the books to find out more about that. I mean really do, these books are amazing IMO) using dodos is Daleks. This either means that:
1. The DRM 'might contain all forms of lost or discarded storytelling endeavour' - ie the missing episodes among many other things,
or
2. the dodo in question is obsessed with Daleks!

This came up in Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch - I think it's around p. 22 (I read it on my Kobo so it's hard to tell!):

"The man was wearing what looked like a Smurf hat and what I recognized as an Edwardian smoking jacket--don't ask me why I know what an Edwardian smoking jacket looks like; let's just say it has something to do with Doctor Who and leave it at that."

Probably not a surprise really as he has written for the show in the past.
