Title: Poll: The Best Of Season 18
Post by: Peri-Peri on May 06, 2012, 05:37:10 pm
Season 18 Of Doctor began airing in August 1980 with The Leisure Hive and ran through until March 1981, ending with Tom Bakers' final story, Logopolis. As well as being the final season of Tom Baker, this season also saw a number of other changes both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. The Doctor gained a new companion in the form of fan favourite (:P) Adric and Romana was written out in Warriors' Gate, paving the way for Nyssa and later Tegan. This season also saw the return of Jaqueline Hill who had previously played Barbara Wright, making her the first and so far only former companion to return as a different character. Behind the scenes John Nathan-Turner took over as the shows producer, Barry Letts returned as Executive Producer and Christopher H. Bidmead joined the show as a script editor.

Which story is your favourite?

The biggest shame of all about this story is that after such a long tenure, Tom Baker went out on such a whimper. The whole season felt like a mish mash of ideas that never fully came together. So much coming and going and not many strong stories. The best of the bunch, and the one that got my vote, is logopolis, but even that isn't as good as it should have been.

I'd say all the stories except Meglos have positives (well, that has Jacqueline Hill, of course, which only emphasises the wasted opportunity) but the only ones I'd consider strong enough to vote for are The Leisure Hive and Logopolis.  I went for The leisure Hive.

This is a weak season and it's a shame because Tom Baker deserved more for his swansong. I chose logopolis but it's only marginally better than the others.

I must confess I am a little against the flow here. I thought this season was a bold experiment. The show had a considerable reboot and the ideas of Chris Bidmead and JNT really gave the show a 'spring clean'. I think this is a season that has some great "science fiction" (which is not always present in some of the others). State of Decay was the first attempt to handle vampires (and did a great job). Full Circle and The Leisure Hive both were enjoyable stories. But for me, the Keeper of Traken, Logopolis (and Castrovalva) triptych were just amazing. Without a doubt, Logopolis was the most spectacular regeneration and a fitting end to the Tom Baker era (Bill Hartnell regenerated cos he fell over, as did Colin Baker. Pertwee and Davison both regenerated cos they were ill but Tom Baker fought the Master and fell off a Radio Telescope!!!)

I proudly voted for Logopolis but Traken, Leisure Hive and State of Decay could all have got the nod.

I've only seen two of them so I had to vote on the best of those, so I went for The Keeper of Traken
