Title: Roranicus' Top Ten Companions Thread
Post by: Roranicus on January 05, 2013, 01:08:21 pm
I have decided to list my top ten companions. The list is my own and so might not follow the trend of what is deemed most popular. I will be listing them in descending order, 1 per month until I get to number 1 in or as close to November as possible.

Please feel free to comment between entries. Tell us your thoughts on my choices or even who you would have put in their place (or even if they deserved a place). If you want to, you can build your own Top Ten Companions thread to show off how you would list them yourself.

My list will cover both classic and new series of the show :)

Clara Oswin Oswald

Despite only appearing on screen twice, and neither of those 'officially' as companion, I can't help but have a good feeling about this one, and so coming in at tenth place is Clara Oswin Oswald.

There is something about the character I find intriguing. Moffat has a tendency to over confuse and draw things out and Clara has begun life in much the same way, but rather than feel annoyed at it happening again, I'm actually genuinly intrigued by the character and how she will play out.

Characteristically there is no guarantee that we have even seen the real Clara yet, but from her (so far) two appearances there has been a certain consistency that I am sure will play out through the rest of her time on the show. She has a cheeky charm about her and her fascination with the Doctor and playful banter that comes of it has been great to watch so far. I think they are going to make a very interesting pairing and her more playful personality will be a breath of fresh air after having quite a serious companion in Amy Pond (who got bumped to 11 for Clara).

It may be premature to include her in one of these lists and my opinion could very likely change as we see more of her, but for now I am happy to include her in tenth place.

Definitely premature, but I am not sure that I would have been able to resist including her either. There's always excitement about a new companion but there is just something that feels more special about her.

I wouldn't add her to my list just yet, but I see where you are coming from and she is definitely promising as a companion.

She is going to be brilliant, I am sure of it, but I have too many I love to justify her inclusion so early in her run.

She wins points for being a Dalek, so that automatically makes her cooler than half of the previous companions. Is she top ten material yet? Perhaps not, but she has been awesome so far.

I've got so many favourite companions from the classic era that I have watched over and over again I am not certain that many from the new era would get a look in, let alone someone who I have seen so little of, but as others have said I am sure that she is going to be great and it is awesome that you have so much faith so early on :)

Definitely too early for me to have included her, but I agree with everyone else that she seems very promising.

She has been brilliant so far, no question, but with so much more to go on with every other companion we have had I don't think I would have included her just yet. I don't doubt though that in a few months, once I'd seen more, I'd be adding her to my own list.

I knew when I posted it that most would see it as an odd choice, but I dunno. I just have this really good feeling about her. And even with two episodes she is still more interesting and intriguing than most of the classic companions I have seen.

I wouldn't have included her, personally. I think there are far too many companions that I know more of and so like more, but I am sure she will be great when we get to know her properly.

Not a choice I would have made at the moment but I'm sure she will be great.

I'm totally with you Roranicus!  I absolutely adore her :) I cannot wait to see how her story line plays out.

Perhaps in a list of NuWho only companions I'd have her on the list already, but covering all eras I think it's a bit soon to decide for me.

New month, new entry. I was mostly alone with my inclusion of Clara. Let's see how the next one goes over.

NINE

Nyssa

Nyssa is one of those companions that started off with so much promise but quickly fell into the 'scream and run' mould of nearly all that came before her. Her initial story introduced her with a great background and so much potential was added at the end with the death of her father and they could have really played this out throughout her time on the show. Seeing how copes with the loss of her planet and the fact there is a madman running around wearing her fathers face. Unfortunately, most of this was quickly swept away and overlooked. But every now and then there would be a glimmer of something special. She was a companion during a time when the TARDIS was very crowded, but whenever we found her alone or alone with the Doctor we would get glimpses of just how good a character she was and exactly what she was capable of. She was never fully realised on the show, which is a shame, but I thought she was pretty cool anyway.

Honestly, I didn't see that coming. I like Nyssa but she was so wasted and not always brilliantly played. I think she would have made my list had her potential been realised, regardless of acting, but as it stands they largely wasted the character.

I love Nyssa - Brilliantly placed - I think :)

I wouldn't have place her, personally. She could have been great but you can't go on 'could have' and they just didn't write her well enough, I don't think.

Too wooden for my list. The acting was only sometimes great and the characterisation was poor.

I find Nyssa to be a mixed bag. Underused and underdeveloped, not always terribly well acted and yet an interesting character that I would have liked to see more of and from.

Nyssa is hit and miss for me. Sometimes the acting gets very ropey which is distracting, but mostly I find it a huge shame that with such a rich back story and introduction to the show, that it was left largely ignored and she ended up with little to do.

These are exactly my problems with the character. She could have been amazing but they left her in the background.
