Title: Enter Peter Davison
Post by: Peri-Peri on January 09, 2013, 03:04:23 pm
With the end of this story came a new Doctor. PD was the first I ever saw and has always been 'my' Doctor, but were you around when he came aboard? What were your thoughts on the casting of this well known actor? Tom Baker famously said 'he's not the Doctor, he's a vet' and I think a lot of people felt the same. And if you weren't around back then, on rewatch how do you think PD was in the role after TB?

At the time, I wasn't too keen on Peter Davison's Doctor - I found him a bit too lightweight.  I was also getting a bit detached from the show at that point, partly from a couple of very patchy series, partly because I was having practical difficulties getting to watch it.  Maybe it's partly getting used to having a younger Doctor, but he's definitely grown on me in recent years.  I really like him now.

I've never been hugely keen on Peter Davison in the role. He just never feels to me as though he is putting 100% in, and outside of the role he never seems as though he took the job particularly seriously. He's not a bad actor, or even a bad Doctor, but I don't think he ever managed to make the role his own.

He is very different from Tom and I think that worked both in his favour and against him. He was a good Doctor and a nice change from something we had had for so long, but he isn't one of my favourites. I don't think casting someone well known is an issue though. It didn't harm Christopher Eccleston.

Some of his stories are amongst my favourites from the classic run and I think Five is a great Doctor, but it must have been hard to take on that role after Tom had owned it for so long. I think PD can rest safely in the knowledge that for millions of people it didn't matter who was in the role, they were never going to be Tom Baker and it didn't matter how good they were.

I've never been keen on the Fifth Doctor. It has nothing to do with him coming after Tom Baker, I just think he wasn't that good, even though some of his stories were great. I think he is my least favourite of the Doctors
