That's still about £6.50 I think

I would never pay that much. I like the mag, but not that much

The price of it is definately a turn off. If they put it up again in the next sixth months I will stop buying it. I know I sound like a grumpy old lady but they take the **** with the constant price hikes

For various reasons I have only gotten around to reading last months DWM this morning and I felt I had to come and rant about the Nicholas Briggs interview. Did anyone here read it? What an **** of a man he comes off as. I always had a deep respect for him and his work on the show and other DW media, but that interview made him come off as a pompous, arrogant, bitter old ****. He mentioned in nearly every other paragraph how he is an actor and people need to realise that, but it seemed like he was the one who needed the most convinving. He spoke of his unprofessionalism like it was something to be proud of. How he argues with producers and directors for example made him sound like a spoiled child who would spit his dummy if he didnt get his own way. He has a very inflated sense of his own importance, name dropped as often as possible like it would make us think he was cool and just generally came off as very unlikeable. His attitude towards his appearance in Torchwood was appauling too. He should be grateful RTD put him forward for the gig but instead moaned that he wasnt sat next to the PM (in the cabinet scenes), that some of his dialogue was cut and that the Euros Lyn asked him to tone it down because he was overacting in a scene, because Euros didnt realise how important his character was. I wish I hadnt read it to be honest because it has really put me off him

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Exterminate on October 22, 2010, 09:40:53 am
I read that too, and I have to agree he didnt come off very well at all. He doesnt seem like a very likeable person. I had to laugh at his comments about how he will still want to do the voices on DW even after he wins an Oscar :P

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Aneurin on October 22, 2010, 09:54:11 am
Its just a shame because the work he does is generally quite good. I guess its like that saying of how you should never meet your heroes. Kinda :P

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: TheDoctorDonna on October 22, 2010, 12:48:21 pm
I have to add my name to this list. He didnt come off favourably at all. He seems to have this attitude like he is the Daleks and the Cybermen. When he was talking one of the many times about being a 'proper' actor, he said something about how other acters are shocked he is an actual actor but he reminds himself that he is the Supreme Dalek while they arent, and though it is an awesome gig, he could be a lot more gracious about it. His singling out of Catherine Tate saying how she didnt get how important his job was was unfair too I thought. He tried to make out like she was rude and stupid about it. She herself has stated lots of times that she was oblivious to lots of the goings on because she didnt understand the more technical stuff about the making of the show. Its hardly a reason to make out like she wasnt nice or pleasent to him. I mean, she thought the Sontarans were robotics and didnt realise they have real people inside, so its hardly surprising if she isnt a know it all about his modulator ring

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Aneurin on October 22, 2010, 12:51:56 pm
Yes, I didnt like that either. When he wasnt name dropping, he was naming people and everytime it was like, 'I like X, but.....' and would tell a story about how they had wronged him or had the audacity to not bow to his ego

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Vampyros Adric on October 22, 2010, 08:50:42 pm
I haven't read the article and I can't tell you how sad I am to hear it. I follow Nick Briggs on Twitter and my experiences of him on there have been, on the whole, positive. One of the things that I have always been amazed at is how decent most of the actors who take part in DW are - I guess i will have a look at the interview for myself but it will be such a shame - this guy has got one of the luckiest gigs on the planet; I hope he realises that.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Peri-Peri on October 22, 2010, 09:05:13 pm
I also have read this and have to admit he really does seem to think awfuly highly of himself. I get he is poud of his job, and he well should be. But his ego about it was jumping off the page. Also, as you all know I am a big fan of the audios, but the way he went about sticking the knife in with his predecessor, basically saying, thought without actually saying, how he saved Big Finish I thought it was a bit much. His attitude towards the staff doesnt seem too pleasent either. When he was talking about phoning RTD behind a directors back so that he could get his own way about a particular voice I was really shocked. He tried to make it out like it was a joke but it seemed very unprofessional.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that about his interview.  I read it with a puzzled expression on my face cos the whole thing sounded very different to what I was expecting.  Makes me wonder why it wasn't edited together better more than anything else :s

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine

I have to agree with everyone too. His interview was shockingly bad. He really didnt come off well at all

Well if this many people thought it was a bad interview, it at least means I wasnt alone. Such a shame really because it could make his popularity go right down

Wow. Nicholas Briggs's job might be exterminated now. Then he would be deleted from the credits.

What does it say about me that I went out and bought DWM just so I can read the interview! And, wow, you lot weren't exaggerating. All I can imagine is that this was an attempt at humour that went disastrously wrong. It is an almost comically bad interview :)

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Aneurin on October 23, 2010, 03:36:48 pm
Im surprised you got a copy to be honest, its been out for over a month and a new one has been released since. Glad you got a chance to read it though. When I put the OP I thought everyone was going to say I was crazy and wrong, but obviously I wasnt the only one who thought it. I really dont think it was a bad attempt at humour though. I think he has just shown himself as not very likeable.

Has anyone read this months yet? The article with Tom Baker has really changed me around to him. I was always about wary because I had heard he isnt so nice but he came off really well and really funny throughout. The woman he was interviewed with though seemed a bit of a 'yes' person. She agreed with everything he said and spent the whole interview saying how amazing he was

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Exterminate on November 02, 2010, 04:02:41 pm
Yea it was a nice little interview. Did you notice how the letters page was full of people saying how awesome Nick Briggs is? Either we are the only people who didnt like that interview or DWM is becoming very biased

I haven't got this months one, saving pennies for next weeks releases lol.  I'm very surprised many people liked his interview, makes me think that they are a little biased like you say  :-\

To be honest I think they probably would have got a lot more negative comments but just chose to gloss over them. I guess its not the smartest thing to have a page full of hate, especially considering the size of Briggs' ego

I thought it was a nice interview with TB, but I agree about the designer. She seemed very keen to please. It was good to hear all the stories though. They need an interview with Davison. Its been ages since the last

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Aneurin on November 05, 2010, 04:10:20 pm
Those letters about the Nick Briggs interview were blatently put in there to counteract the amount of negativity his interview garnered. Ive since seen people elsewhere saying how awful it was too so it wasnt just us few.

This months magazine was great though and I cant wait for the extra content starting next year. Im assuming its going to be TW stuff seeing as they barely fill the space they have at the moment. Content is good but at least a third of it is made up of reviews of DVDs and Audios

I agree. They have a serious lack of original content lately. I know its quiet for news, but the majority of issues are now made up with the reviews of various products and now they are spending about 6 pages per issue talking about villains and telling us what episodes they appeared in, though while interesting to a point isnt exactly stuff we didnt already know

I like the Cyberman. IMHO you can't beat the classic Cyberman look. And, of course, the lovely David Banks doing the voice. If I had that poster I would put it on the wall and do my David Banks in the Five Doctors Voice 'You can take the patrol... across' (Yes i know this is a Troughton era Cyberman but I can't do that electronicy buzz style voice).

I clearly have some problems.

Would that go down badly in the US you think?

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: chrissymarieb on November 19, 2010, 03:57:21 am
Really hope that what's in the spoiler tags is not the case - probably wouldn't go over too well here.  But then again it would really depend on the story and the circumstances and how it is handled.  They could pull that off but it would be tricky.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine

I sincerely hope that what is in the spoiler tags ISN'T true. I can't see it going down well anywhere... let alone the US,.... no matter how it's handled. :-\

Cover is a little too like a teen magasine for my tastes - all it needs is the speak bubbles :P

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Aneurin on November 20, 2010, 07:56:27 pm
I think the cover looks great and fits perfectly with this months (very random) theme.

Im glad people aren't keen on the spoiler above. I think even Moff would have trouble trying to justify that storyline. The Red Dwarfers did a good job with it mind, but I don't think Moff is really going for the comedy angle.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Peri-Peri on November 20, 2010, 08:00:18 pm
The Red Dwarf episode was brilliant and funny but it was meant to be tongue in cheek and a bit of a mickey take. I think if River did that it would seriously taint the character. Killing someone fictional could have very little effect on how we view her, but making out like she assassinated a very well liked public figure in a topic which is no doubt still very raw for some people could be a massively bad move. I hope its nothing more than speculation.

'Tom Bakers most bonkers interview ever'

Nice cover this month. Shame they are still trying to bleed the fans dry as I have no doubt that over half of it will be reviews of old stories yet again

I didnt realise they were having a new look. Or do they mean the extra pages? The font seems a bit different but other than that it looks pretty much the same. I am hoping that the new pages will be made up of TW news.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Roranicus on January 10, 2011, 03:11:37 pm
Bit too much yellow for my liking. Not a big fan of yellow. The new font is cool though.

Why are they still insisting on calling it series 2? Tom Spilsbury is such a stubborn so and so. All last year he was on facebook and whatnot preaching about how it was series 1 and thats what will be on the DVDs etc. Then as soon as the BBC started calling it series 5 he started calling it 'the new series' or 'series 1 of Matt Smith' and then when the DVD came out calling it series 5 he was calling it series 31. DWM are the only people who are calling it series 1 and 2 but it is so confusing to see. My first thought when I saw it on the cover was 6b, but even that wouldnt make sense and now the DVDs have confirmed it as Series 5 he may as well just give in. Its either series 6 or series 32 depending on how you decide to order it, but the 2011 series is never going to be series 2. Rant over :P

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: TheDoctorDonna on January 10, 2011, 05:33:55 pm
The topic of what to call the series had a thread on GB that seemed to go on forever. I personally agree with you, its either 6 or 32, but there are some who argued until they were blue in the face. It was funny to read how heated it got though. Everyone on that forum is so highly strung :P

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Roranicus on January 11, 2011, 07:33:55 pm
I just seems that they are trying to make something 'happen' but nobody, including the BBC, is backing them up

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Tardis-Console on January 12, 2011, 01:48:46 pm
This is technically 'series 2' for me, but thats because I only started watching last year. I know it's series 6 though and it doesnt put me off watching. To me, the thought of calling it that seems a bit stupid so I don't know why the official magazine would do it.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: TheDoctorDonna on January 13, 2011, 06:36:14 pm
Moffat made a comment about it being series 1 and some people just sort of jumped on it, even though he has since said that he called it series 5 himself. Now it seems DWM won't give it up. Probably a conversation for a different thread though :)

This is whats in this months issue:

•This Charming Man! The gloves are off! Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat comes out fighting against the critics in this month’s Production Notes, and explains why the show is for everyone, and not ‘just’ for kids...

•Bigmouth Strikes Again! Tegan is back! No-nonsense Australian Janet Fielding, recently reunited with her former crewmates for brand new audio adventures, reveals how she was persuaded to return – and what she thinks about Doctor Who today! (Just don’t mention the cricket.)

•What She Said! The Eighth Doctor’s audio adventures are about to reach an incredible climax! DWM speaks to stars Carole Ann Ford, Graeme Garden, Sheridan Smith, Niky Wardley, and Nicholas Briggs about battling the Daleks — and who might die in the process . . .

•Barbarism Begins At Home! Cannibalistic old ladies, teenage girl gangs, and something very unpleasant in the basement. It can only

It was relatively light on the information this month considering this time last year we were getting episode titles. Hopefully next month will be the big one as it will be the last before the series airs. I think

I would hope so, but the April edition is out on the 7th, so they could leave lots of spoilers until the very last minute as that would come out just a few days before if it is starting on the 9th.

Issue 432's cover

Confirms the Comic relief sketch. And possibly an episode title in the top left corner?  ???

I think the Doc probably gets it on subscription, so he gets it a day early.

Though I have heard rumours that a couple of shops have been selling it today so it could be that he found a copy somewhere

I mentioned this yesterday in the spoiler section, but thought it worth a mention here too. The Next issue will reveal the titles for episodes 3 through 7. It's due on April 7th (I think) though I will be able to update the day before because of the subscription :)

DWM have tweeted that the next cover will be very spoilery. As always we will be posting it in here when it is revealed (probably Monday) so just a heads up to people who might not want spoiling that they should probably avoid this thread over the next few weeks.

For those who do post in here about any spoilers, please try to remember to tag them so they don't show up on the recently posted feed :)

Steven Moffat sounded very peeved in this months production notes about spoilers. I don't think he is happy that the TIA/DOTM plot got leaked.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine

I haven't seen this months DWM yet but he's spoken about spoilers on Twitter a couple of times & yeah I get the feeling he's not happy about them. Problem with the first 2 eps was once people had seen TIA/DotM at the press screening it was going to be very hard to stop the plot getting out (I'm only guessing that's what happened!) - I managed to avoid it, happily!

This looks a lovely issue. In the (very understandable) shock and sadness of the death of Lis Sladen, Nick Courtney's tributes very slightly got overlooked (unless I missed it there was no dedication at the beginning of any of the shows). So this is a lovely way to redress that. Although I'm still sad at the loss, what a wonderful life and contribution he made to the show :) This looks a great tribute

I assumed it was to do with the fact that the Hitler cover looked really good on the paper one and maybe wouldn't have looked so good with a glossy finish... I hated the feel of that last month's issue! Made me *shivers* mine is glossy again this month :)

Yeah I did. I think it was to try & make it more like an authentic 30s magazine.

I really liked it like that. No smudgy finger marks.

Next month's issue is a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: Kovarians-Eye-Patch on October 28, 2011, 03:15:02 pm
I think I am going to stop buying this now. The last couple have issues haven't been that great in the way of new information (tribute issues aside obviously) and a lot of what has been written has come off in quite a bitter tone, especially when comparing the show to other shows. For the last few issues they have been talking about the ratings of series 6 and seem to have felt the need to disparage any show that isn't Doctor Who. The latest issue had a mention of Vernon Kaye tweeting about beating DW on overnights, which is fair enough. They wanted to show that on officials DW trumpted Family Fortunes, but then after talking down his show they then went on to refer to his wife, Tess Daly, as being just the 'nurse' of Bruce Forsythe. Perhaps it was an attempt at humour but it came off very bitter and unnecessary. Why bring his wife into it at all? The strength of Doctor Who is in how good it is, so putting down everyone and everything that isn't associated with it just makes the show come off worse imo. The editor always seems to come off a bit gloaty as well, writing as though he is best friends with anyone who has ever stepped foot on the set, which is really annoying. I think he spends way too much time on Gallifrey Base and his attitude and the bitterness from there is rubbing off on the mag. I used to love reading it but I think I will leave it now until someone else takes the reigns.

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: TheDoctorDonna on October 29, 2011, 09:33:26 pm
You know what, I totally agree with you. I was actually discussing this with a friend earlier this week and talking about how the magazine, for want of a better word, has been feeling a bit clique-y of late, as though it is Doctor Who fans against the world.

As for the editor, I have a strong dislike for Tom Spilsbury anyway. I got into a big argument with him on another forum about 2 years ago over something silly and trivial but it was made worse by his superiority complex and the fact he thinks he is the total point of authority on anything related to Doctor Who.

The magazine still has it's good points and I love all the merchandise stuff, but the rest of it had gone downhill fast

Same here, I don't love it but I don't hate it... I can see why they've done it though, it totally has that WW2 feeling with the sort of propaganda poster look about it, perhaps what they're trying to show?

Issue 443 is out on the 12th and you have a choice between two covers. I want the Zygon one! I just hope they have the same content inside, because they don't always and it's annoying.

I really like the first Doctor cover - are those Daleks taken from The Dalek Master Plan?

They are a couple days late with it this month. I have no idea why though. The last time they held off on the cover was because of hints of spoilers on the front and so they revealed it the morning before release, which is the day subscribers get it. If they do have news of a companion in it then that might be why it's late?

BG, they do sell it in the US but I think it's hard to find in most stores and the US specific one was discontinued last year. You'd be best looking online for shipping I think.

To add to the cover, according to the DWM Twitter feed this issue comes with a double sided poster & will be priced at £4.99 instead of the usual £4.50 (not clear if this increase is permanent or just because of the poster).

Title: Re: Doctor Who Magazine
Post by: hannahcole93 on July 25, 2012, 11:10:11 am
From what I read at the back of the mag that came today, seems the extra 49p was because of the poster.  Back to £4.50 next month :)

It looks really good :) I'm just hoping it appears home today, tomorrow or Friday morning so mum and dad can bring it up when they come to visit this weekend :)

Here's the cover for the Xmas special - it carries a spoiler (so I guess they aren't that worried about that tidbit). It's out next Thursday - price is a bit higher than usual.

It's now £5 an issue for this which, if you ask me, is getting a bit ridiculous, and for the first time in years I'm starting to miss issues. Not necessarily on purpose, but whereas it used to be a must-have, these days I mostly forget about it and when I do pick it up I haven't even been reading them. The Christmas issue I got in early December is still in the celophane. It's getting to the point where despite having new episodes airing and the show in production, they aren't giving anything new and I feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over.

I cancelled my subscription a little while ago so from March-ish I should stop getting it. I was hardly reading them anymore so figured I'd spend the money on something else and just buy them if I fancy them.
