Title: The Doctor Who Experience
Post by: The Doc on October 11, 2010, 10:32:04 pm
As you know, three of the Doctor Who exhibitions around the UK are due to close to make way for a bigger and better exhibition in Cardiff.

But it seems that something big is being planned for London in 2011.

Throughout the weekend performances of the Doctor Who Live Tour, flyers were handed out people in attendance promoting the  Doctor Who Experience and now a new website has been launched to accompany it.

No more details have been released as yet, but I will update as soon as I find out

Is it an ARG or is it a "Come here and give us your money" type thing?

I have no idea what it is. It may be totally unrelated to the exhibitions. I was just putting 2 and 2 together and hoping for an even number.

I was just saying to GreenLemons, perhaps they are opening a DW theme park :P

I signed up. It has the same look as the site for the live tour. Perhaps it's getting a full time west end run or something?

Just saying :)

hmm we'll see, It's so sad they're shutting down the exhibition in Cardff, I remember going there soon after it opened, and I've been there about 6 times in the last 4 years, Ok, it's small, but awesome! With any luck this new Doctor Who experience would be a version of the Earls Court exhibition they had on for a couple of months a few years back! Becuase that was amazing! Me and my friend loved it, and it was soooo big! So yeah, that's what I hope this new Doctor Who experience would be!

They are putting the entire 9/10 TARDIS in there apparantly. Thats why it hasnt been dismantled and why they need the bigger exhibit

The Sun have a little bit about this in their TV pullout today (see link below). I know they aren't known for their accuracy generally but I thought I'd share it as it sounds plausible.

Why do they have to charge so much? Is it really needed? Especially considering most people will be paying extra to travel to it. I think they take the **** sometimes with what they charge for DW related stuff

Title: Re: The Doctor Who Experience
Post by: poprockgeek on November 02, 2010, 12:14:25 pm
I was actually thinking that was quite reasonable considering what you get charged to go to other things these days. Maybe I'll change my mind when we know exactly what it is. And maybe that's just because I'll only be paying for my own ticket as I have no kids  :)

Title: Re: The Doctor Who Experience
Post by: Oh-Wise-One on November 02, 2010, 12:24:26 pm
I understand that very little comes for free and money has to be made, but I do think they charge over the odds for a lot of stuff. More than enough to cover costs and line their pockets

It seems to me that they will suffer from a lack of return visits. They would more likely get a better return from donations

Here is a full outline.

The Doctor Who Experience starts in London on Sunday 20th February 2011 at London’s Olympia Two venue (Hammersmith Road, London W14 8UX). Opening times are 10am-6pm daily.

Visitors will be invited to step through a crack in time to become the Doctor’s companion on an adventure. Their challenge will be to reunite the Doctor with the TARDIS whilst fending off threats from a Dalek spaceship and Weeping Angels along the way, before exploring the wonders of Doctor Who at an out of this world exhibition.

The Doctor Who Experience allows visitors to join the Doctor on a journey through time and space, encountering some of the best-loved and scariest monsters from the series. Special scenes filmed with current Doctor Matt Smith combine with amazing special effects and the chance to enter a recreation of the modern TARDIS interior topped off by a breathtaking 3D finale. The walk through experience is a fully contained interactive Doctor Who adventure.

Displays will include items never seen before including original costumes, the Tom Baker TARDIS police box and two authentic TARDIS sets from the eras of David Tennant and Peter Davison. The public will also be able to get up close and personal with iconic sets from recent series, including the Pandorica Box and Chair and confront numerous monsters including several generations of the Daleks and Cybermen as well as Silurians an Ice Warrior and a Zygon.

I actually agree with Oh-Wise-One, it's a hefty price tag, but then again, isn't everything over priced in Londinium?

I doubt very much I'll be going. I love Doctor Who, but not enough to go to London again. I really didn't like it there.

Steven Moffat has said...
The Doctor Who Experience is a fan's dream come true - a fully interactive adventure that will allow viewers of the show to get as close as possible to some of the scariest monsters from the series. It will also be the first time that Doctor Who artefacts from all the show's 47-year history - classic and new - will be on display together, many of them being seen for the first time. And never mind that, this is the day the Doctor teaches you how to fly the Tardis through time and space, and takes you into battle with all his deadliest enemies in a brand new adventure.

So steady your nerves and bring your own sofa - the Doctor needs you.

Matt Smith has said...
The whole concept of the Doctor Who Experience is massively exciting! I hope as many people as possible enjoy boarding the TARDIS next year to embark upon an exhilarating and sometimes terrifying adventure through time and space.

Tickets didn't go on sale til 9 so I'm intrigued how they sold out before then (unless my clock's out again & you guys were posting after 9!) - according to the nice people at Ticketmaster I was successful in getting a pair  :) - they had better not be lying  :-\

No they possibly did say it - it took me a while to work out what I needed to do & one of the ticket providers was telling you to come back when they went on general sale (implication here is 'they are sold out') plus you had to choose time slots & many were pinging back as unavailable  :)

I am going to keep re-reading that confirmation email loads just to be sure  ???

SFX have an awesome interview with Mike Tucker who is doing all the design and work on the DWE. This is the best part, but there is loads more through the link at the end.

So, how did you become involved with The Doctor Who Experience and what is your role?

“I was contacted by BBC Worldwide last year and asked if I would be interested in pitching for the refurbishment of some of the props from the classic era of the show that had been on display in various places like Longleat and Blackpool over the years.

“So I went down to the store in Cardiff and took a look at some of the key items that they would like to refurbish. And I basically made the recommendation that the best way forward was to strip everything back down to its component parts and try to put them back together as close as possible to how they looked when they were last seen on screen.

“Now, some of these things are 40 years old, and at the time they were designed to last for, what – two a half weeks of filming? So some of them were in a reasonably poor condition.

“But obviously, with my background as a BBC visual effects designer and with a lot of my crew being ex-BBC staff, I was in a position to say to the Beeb, ‘Well, look, not only do I know how these things were put together, but in some cases I can use some of the designers and assistants who worked on them the first time around.’

“So they agreed to that. We came up with a list of certain items that they would like in this exhibition and we’ve been in the process of making them look better than they’ve ever done before.”

Was there any monster that was completely beyond hope?

“You’d be surprised. One of the items that we’ve been doing is the only surviving Zygon. Now, that had rotted to the point where literally all of the foam rubber was falling to dust. And the Latex had gone extremely crispy. Because they’ve had actors sweating inside them; they’ve had slime spread on them; and they’ve been stuck under studio lights. Plus, it was, what, ’75 when the Zygon was done.

“But because some components of it are fibreglass, and there is such good photo reference of it around, we were able to do quite a good job by taking out all the pieces that were still in a repairable state, and then taking moulds off other items that weren’t, and just looking at how it had originally been put together. Also I gave that project to Colin Mapson, who is one of the original BBC effects designers from the ’70s and worked on a lot of Doctor Whos. So he has actually recreated the Zygon from the ground up.”

So, how “original” is the Zygon you’ve turned out?

“I would say we are 80% original and then 20% new build. But it has been done in such a sympathetic way to how the originals were made, I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised how good that looks.”

“It’s been that sort of juggle. I mean, one of the items we’re doing is an Ice Warrior. Now the Ice Warrior itself – the sort of turtle shell torso – is fibreglass, and that has survived very well, given that it was built in ’67. So we took that off the mannequin that it was on, and we discovered that it’s still got Bernard Bresslaw’s name written on the back of it – he was the enormously tall actor from the Carry On films who played the first Ice Warrior. So we’ve established that it is the original one.

“The legs were in pretty poor condition but we were able to salvage one of them in such a way that we could take a mould off it. So we recreated the legs from the original prop. Then the head and the arms have been brand new sculpts. But having got the leg and torso there, we were able to match textures and colours. So there you’ve got something that is maybe 50% original and 50% new build. But hopefully nobody’s going to able to spot the joins.”

“The idea, though is, ‘don’t try to update them; try to make them as they would have been back in the era the things were made.’”

Doctor Who fans, being Doctor Who fans, will clearly read something into the fact that there are going to be Zygons and Ice Warriors in the Experience. Are the kids being prepped for their return in the new series?

“We haven’t been told anything our end about that. Obviously, if there is a masterplan about why they’ve picked certain monsters we’ve certainly not been made aware of it.

“But one of the things we’ve tried to do is, if the monsters have come back in the new show, is there the possibility of finding an older version of the prop to refurbish? So with the Cybermen, for example, there is going to be an exhibit of Cyberman heads. So they’ve obviously got the ones from the new series, and then we’ve got a number of casts of ‘Silver Nemesis’ and ‘Revenge Of The Cybermen’ and ‘The Invasion’ and ‘The Moonbase’. But we’re also recreating a ‘Tenth Planet’ Cyberman, so you’ve got the evolution of the Cybermen right the way through.

“We’ve done a similar thing with the Sontarans. We’ve refurbished one of the 1980s costumes. And that’s going to be put alongside one of the new series ones to see how the thing has evolved.

“Daleks are the other ones. We’ve done the Special Weapons Dalek from ‘Remembrance Of The Daleks’. And there’s going to be a progression of Dalek types from the ’60s to the present day. And whereas from the ’80s era, we’ve got existing props, we’re actually using replicas to recreate some of the ’60s one. In particular we’re doing ‘The Dead Planet’ and ‘Evil Of The Daleks’.”

If you want to see my photos I've set up an album on photobucket & can let you have a link if you want it (I'll post it in this thread if there's a demand) - they are just of the exhibits (you can't take photos in the interactive bit) so no real spoilers but if you don't want to know what's on display don't look  :)

Also while I'm here the official DW site has some galleries too & they of course can take pics in the interactive bit! You can see them HERE (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/news/bulletin_110214_01/Doctor_Who_Experience)

Awesome, thanks! How long did you spend there in total?

Title: Re: The Doctor Who Experience
Post by: poprockgeek on February 20, 2011, 10:13:43 pm
Couple of hours I think, but I could've spent longer reading things thoroughly - I was more focused on seeing things/taking pics & soaking up the atmosphere.

The interactive bit is about 30 mins, then you've got the exhibition. There were plenty of people there, but not enough to cause congestion anywhere, so I'm guessing they limited the numbers for the previews. Now it's officially open I'd expect it to be busier, in which case I would think you could be there longer to be able to see everything properly - no attempt was made to rush anybody. And you've got the shop too - which you have to exit through, naturally!  :)

Yes please, I'd like to have a look at the link! Might help me make up my mind whether or not to go! :)

No problem. Take a look at them HERE (http://s1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee448/Emma_Ditchburn/The%20Doctor%20Who%20Experience%20London%202011/)

Everyone else remember no peeking if you don't want to know what's there - though I don't think there's any real surprises!

Also while I'm here the official DW site has some galleries too & they of course can take pics in the interactive bit! You can see them HERE (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/news/bulletin_110214_01/Doctor_Who_Experience)

Thank you SO MUCH for these pictures!  They are great!!!  And they are all I will get to see since they are not likely to do anything like that here in the US.

Thanks again for sharing :D

Anyone help? I'm slightly confused with the tickets, if mum lets me then I'm probably going to try and do the silver package, which was avalibe to book last week, but I looked again today and it seems you can't do it anymore, but the Doctor Who experience website says you can still do them? Confused.... anyone help?

If what I just said made sense?

I'd contact the booking site for clarification - it maybe that the DWE haven't updated their site to show the current position re:bookings.

Apparently there are a limited number of tickets available for tomorrow priced at just £4.29 to celebrate the Royal Wedding if anyone is interested. I'd go to avoid the RW personally though my guess is they are trying to captitalise on the number of people in London tomorrow.

More details HERE (http://www2.seetickets.com/doctorwhoexperience/calendar.asp?e|artist=DOCTOR+WHO+EXPERIENCE&filler1=id1doctorwhoexperience&filler2=multiid1doctorwhoexperience&filler3)

It would be tempting, but I really cannot be bothered with the faff of going to London when the Royal Wedding is on... OK I wouldn't have to go right into London, I can get off at Clapham and change, but something tells me it'll still be horribly horribly busy!

But saying that if you haven't been before £4.29 is an incredibly good price for what you get if you haven't been before and can be bothered to go up to London! :)

It is kinda worth it though :) All for getting to be in 11's TARDIS!  :D

I went last Sunday!  And, no spoilers, but it was huge fun.  Most people were taking their kids, but nobody batted an eyelid at a couple of old geeks like hubby and me.  I would say kids of age 5-10 or so would love it...some of the very young kids were getting a little bit over scared, though.

Piece of advice for those thinking of going: Kensington Olympia Tube is off down a little branch line, and trains between there and Earls Court aren't as frequent as on the main District line, so check your times to get there within the half-hour slot on your ticket.  There's also not much in the way of eating places locally, so you might want to sort that elsewhere in town.

Another thing...they had leaflets for a 'Design your own monster' competition, and they said the winner would have a model of their monster made and displayed at DWE from next February.  As the Olympia one winds up in November, I'm guessing this means it may be going on tour in future, so those of you who can't get to London should perhaps keep your eyes peeled for future locations...

Its not touring, just moving to Cardiff. The London base is only temporary until they finish building the new custom built place in Cardiff, then it will move there permanantly

Nope. The London version was originally supposed to close in November but it got extended to February - not 100% sure why. I want to try to go again before it closes - just to see all the stuff they've added.

I haven't. I expected that I'd be down there really soon after it re-opened but I've just not bothered. I haven't heard anyone raving about it, but I did see an ad on tv for it a while back. I can't imagine much has changed and it's not really something you can go to over and over
