Title: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on August 31, 2010, 10:53:06 pm Thought I'd mention the sensitive subject of character deaths in the series, mainly as I am curious to know peoples opinions ;D
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on August 31, 2010, 10:56:38 pm Tosh. Without a doubt. Though all of them moved me with the exception of Owen. I tried and tried to take to his character but just couldnt. Toshiko's death was so moving and I wont deny I shed a tear. Her little video message at the end too (a la 'Angel's' Doyle) was a lovely little way of saying goodbye too
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on August 31, 2010, 11:04:02 pm I wont deny I shed a tear. I sobbed!! I really liked her character, it irks me a little to read all the bring back Ianto stuff, yet noone seemingly bat an eyelid over Ianto and Tosh ;( Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on August 31, 2010, 11:05:51 pm Id much rather see the return of Tosh. Even if it was only for one episode or a flashback or something. I liked Ianto, but I really feel his character was done and dusted

Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on September 01, 2010, 12:33:00 am Who's Steven?
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: hannahcole93 on September 01, 2010, 09:08:37 am Steven was Jack's grandson...
I have to admit, that Steven's death made me shed a tear... Jack and Steven had such a lovely relationship through series 3, and when Jack uses Steven to kill the 456, it made me sad. How could he use someone who he loved to fix something like that? Also I must admit that Exit Wounds episode got me too, not so much with Owen's death... I figured he may die at the end of the series or at least play a lesser role as an "outcast" now that he dies forever. But the way they did Tosh's death got me too :'( Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on September 01, 2010, 11:22:03 am Oh was that his name? I totally forgot. Yea his dying was sad, but moreso because we all knew it kinda had to happen, and Jack had to do it to his own grandson. Punch in the gut moment, but awesome
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: 2cajuman2 on September 01, 2010, 12:10:57 pm *gets ready to confess*
I never cried over Owen or Tosh... I got sad, but not a single tear was shed. For Ianto, I have never cried so much. It was ridiculous, I knew it was coming, there was a line and I went "Oh, no, I can't be right, please, no, no, oh god." So for Day 4 at the end I shouting at the tv screen "I can't be right! Don't let me be right!". *confesses* I still havent seen Day 5 for a 2nd time... I have only seen Day 4 twice, I just get so emotionally drained it is ridiculous! I loved Ianto, but he had a good story and a good conclusion so I wouldn't want that to be affected. I miss him though, I loved his one-liners! His welshness, his coffee, him being prepared, him and Jack.... *snaps out of memories* By the time it came to Steven I was expecting anything, I didn't think it was that big a shock, I may have cried, but it wasn't as hard hitting as Ianto. Like I said, I was emotionally drained. I think the other character that makes me close to crying was Estelle, I think it is Jacks grief at the end. But that always makes me sad. Although we don't see his death I get sad at the death of the real Captain Jack, its the fade away and of course at that moment the kiss scene has made me cry, or at least come close... But no, Tosh and Owen really didn't affect me too much. I am more likely to get upset at the scene where Tosh's message pops up and they are all crying. Its when I see people cry obviously. :-\ Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: BlueRose on September 01, 2010, 03:15:47 pm Tosh. I am sick to death with the lack of strong, intelligent, female chars in scifi. Seems the last time we had them was when RTD was around along with Joss Whedon and J Michael Straczynski.
Moffat cannot do, does not know how to do, probably never will do. I want my Fred, my Willow, my Tosh, my Ivanova, my Delenn--and I'd like to see one as a companion, thanks. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on September 01, 2010, 09:46:17 pm I think with the writing panel we have it's guarenteed for the next Torchwood series :D
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Vampyros Adric on September 01, 2010, 11:36:19 pm This is gonna sound a bit weird but the reason I find CoE so upsetting (in a good way) is the death of Frobisher and his family to 'save' them from 456. It was horrific to think he was in such a no win situation and I keep putting myself there. Everyone else (apart from Jack's grandson) was involved by choice. Those two little girls though. Mammy and Daddy asks you to go into the bedroom ... Awful (and powerful).
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on September 01, 2010, 11:40:20 pm Yes that got me too, and the acting by Peter Calpaldi as always was SUPERB! The worst thing is he didn't need to do it, as Torchwood sorted it in the end. Yet this is what I loved so much about it, "everbody lives" is not for me!
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Vampyros Adric on September 01, 2010, 11:41:35 pm Can I fit a sneaky *I think Capaldi would do great as the Master* in here without anyone noticing ;)
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Vampyros Adric on September 01, 2010, 11:43:08 pm But that one scene ripped me to bits and you are right, the futility I think is what impacts so much. At least Jack's grandson (not that it was pleasant) but you could see why Jack did it. With Frobisher if he'd just held on... Really devastating!
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Seren_y_Gogledd on September 01, 2010, 11:46:01 pm The worst part about the deaths of Frobisher and his family is how it could have been avoided if he'd just waited a while, they'd have been fine. With that and Steven's death, it takes a lot to affect me but CoE managed it.
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on September 01, 2010, 11:54:26 pm If the next series is half as good as that truly outstanding television event (imo of course) it will be great :D

Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: thefifthdoctor on September 03, 2010, 12:08:38 pm I think it's very apt that Owen has no votes yet - I really disliked everything about that character & not a fan of whatshisface playing him either.
I was raging that Tosh died, it was a heavy moment for sure. I'd put Frobisher out of my memory - as a parent that bit really seriously disturbed me. Do you think they got the idea from The Mist? Hands up, has anyone managed to watch CotE since it was broadcast? I can't do it. It's brilliant, but just too heavy in places. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Seren_y_Gogledd on September 03, 2010, 04:27:57 pm I've managed to watch most of it, still haven't watched Day Five again though.
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: 2cajuman2 on September 03, 2010, 09:27:17 pm you know other people saying they havent watched it loads of times, ok twice, makes me feel so much better. I felt a bit wimpy and pathetic, but now I dont :) (Hope i didnt offend you ::) )
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on September 03, 2010, 10:01:56 pm I must have watched COE (all eps) at least 6 times since transmission. Love it
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: sleekituk on September 03, 2010, 10:34:51 pm I've watched it twice since, better every time IMHO.
With you on Frobisher, awful. feel sad now! Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: ciaramil on September 04, 2010, 12:10:23 pm I voted Ianto... *takes cover from the scary people who might kill me(:* Don't get me wrong, Tosh and Owen's death had me pretty much in tears and if I had my way I'd bring all three of them back. But I dunno why but Ianto just had a hold over me... His death reduced me to tears too..\:
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: mel42 on September 04, 2010, 06:05:47 pm I voted for Owen, I thought he had a very interesting character arc from being a young doctor to more cynical after losing his fiance and then having his life changed after death. Maybe if they had found a way to restore him to life after that, he would have been a bit less cynical and still worked together with the team. Jack had chosen all the team members for a reason because they had something to offer or they needed to work through their problems through their jobs at Torchwood.
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Doomsday on September 14, 2010, 09:02:49 pm By far Tosh's. Ianto's was very moving, but from where I was at, I did not know Tosh was going to die, so it was a massive shock for myself, whereas I knew about Ianto in advance so I had time to get used to the idea.
I cried a lot when Tosh died as she was such a sweet character who really worked well on the show. I would have loved to have seen more of her, and seen her get tougher and braver. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: The Doc on September 14, 2010, 09:29:58 pm Tosh doesnt get nearly enough love that she deserves. I loved Ianto, but for me Tosh was the biggest loss of all of them
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Exterminate on September 15, 2010, 06:15:15 pm Tosh. Without a shadow of a doubt!
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: PandoricaPond on October 06, 2010, 07:48:50 pm Owen for sure! I loved the character so much. It was sad coz I loved his soft side and wanted to see that get explored a little more. And when Tosh said "Because you're breaking my heart" I cried. Ianto's death kinda pissed me off. Coz when CoE ended I sat there thinking "That's it! No more TW! Man!" But RTD always comes through. Great guy. Shame he left DW.
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: matty on October 06, 2010, 07:57:32 pm It was between Ianto and Tosh but in the end I had to vote Ianto. I just feel that it was the most emotional death I'd ever seen. The sadist part was seeing him die in Jacks arms and knowing jack would be fine but Ianto couldn't come back.
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: TheDoctorDonna on October 31, 2010, 09:52:17 am I went with Tosh. He sitting there all wounded and still trying to calm Owen down had me in tears. And that 'you're breaking my heart' moment was heartbreaking :'(
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Hyacathusarillistad on January 11, 2011, 12:43:21 am Old thread, I know. Sue me.
While Owen was my favourite character from Out of Time onwards, I think I was affected the most by Tosh's death. It was just so sudden, and senseless, that it completely took my by surprise. I quite honestly couldn't have cared less about Ianto's death, because I already knew it was coming thanks to the internet. I was cheering when Jack's grandson was killed; I just hated that little kid. But then, I hate pretty much every child actor I see, mostly because they can't **** act. No, the fact that they're just kids is not a valid excuse. >_> Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: poprockgeek on January 11, 2011, 11:21:38 am Thanks for digging it up - reminded me I haven't voted come in to vote since I finally got caught up with TW :)
I'm going for Tosh because it was the genuinely the one that provoked the most emotional response from me - I was literally balling :'( Owen's death has to be a factor in here as well, but as it hadn't really affected me the first time he passed I know it was Tosh's death that drew the response. I had nothing for Ianto and only welled up a little bit over Jack's grandson. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: TheRealHeatherG on January 20, 2011, 01:32:31 am I cried when Owen and Tosh died -- two in one ep, it was kind of intense. And while I didn't cry when Ianto died (though I loved him), that's probably because I was bracing for it. But I think the death of Jack's grandson was the most shocking for me; I was totally unspoiled, and my heart was racing, and I kept thinking, "Jack won't sacrifice his grandson...right?" But he did.
:o Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: EmoSpaceWhale on February 13, 2011, 04:26:48 am *sighs* ... I feel like I might get a bit of hate but.... It's Ianto. I has to be. For those who know me well this is no surprise.
Tosh and Owen.... I loved them. I can't watch that episode without crying... But with Ianto? I can't stand it... For example, I tried watching CoE after it was on TV and I could only get up to Day 3. I love the Janto moments otherwise the story is just too heavy. I feel as though I'll be the only on one here who will fight for him. *sighs* Yes I'm a supporter of Save Ianto Jones but I'm not one who refuses to watch MD. It has John, I have to. XD But what I don't understand is why did he have to die?... The excuse that is out there isn't a very good one. He would have sacrificed his grandson if he had to, Ianto didn't need to die, and don't you think in the moment Gwen's and her kid's death would have been stronger? But no... She's Russel's pet. After Tosh and Owen Ianto was Torchwood. Of course he was the one who replaced them. He also was always there in the beginning. They needed him. And before I annoy more people or just keep saying more things to make myself look stupid I'll shut up for the time being. But, to answer the question: Not a day or hour goes by that I don't have a thought about him. I don't think the same could be said for the others. He was and is still my favourite... It's kinda weird but still. *shrugs* Ianto <3 ;~; Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: 2cajuman2 on February 13, 2011, 07:57:44 pm I won't give you hate, I miss Ianto the most!
Though, in terms of character and story, he had reached the end :-\ It's the writer inside me acknowledging it... Gwen could have reached an end if they had killed off Rhys or something, but Gwen has an ongoing story, you have a character, their role is 1+2+3 and their journey is A to B, as soon as they reach that - Bam, what is their use? Nothing. *shrugs* I've accepted it Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: EmoSpaceWhale on February 20, 2011, 02:02:02 am Haha thanks...
Oh I dunno about that. He was the one we knew the least about, they could have done a bit? Gwen... She serves no point really IMO. I know that he is dead and more than likely won't come back but that doesn't mean I have to accept it. That's how I look at it and I'll continue to support him. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Joshua on February 20, 2011, 11:32:43 am Definitely Tosh. She's the only TW character I actually liked. And her death was very sad too :(
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: RiverandTheDoctor on April 29, 2011, 04:26:24 am Tosh's.
I loved Tosh, but never liked Owen (in fact I often hated him) and while I liked Ianto, I never loved him as much as I loved Tosh. Jack's grandson's death and Tommy's death were also ones that were really sad, but I was far more invested in Tosh's character, so hers affected me more deeply than theirs did. Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: chrissymarieb on April 29, 2011, 01:11:21 pm Frobisher and his family, and Steven. I just saw it last night for the first time. Awful :(
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: TragicVision on June 09, 2011, 11:30:18 pm I went for Tosh and thought it would get a low result based on and in comparison to the other deaths. Boy was I wrong. I stand by my decision though as it hit me hardest personally as I believe there was so much more character to play out there and she really showed it during her last moments
Title: Re: Which characters death affected you the most? Post by: Tardis-Console on July 26, 2011, 11:03:05 am Toshiko, without a doubt. I was absolutely gutted when she died :( |
