Title: IDW Comics
Post by: Exterminate on November 20, 2010, 03:52:37 pm
Its a three part story being released in the US for $3.99 a pop, but I have heard it will be making its way over here soon.

This is it! No alternate worlds, no dreams or virtual cities-it's the first time ever that the Doctor goes up against JACK THE RIPPER! When the Doctor, Rory, and Amy find themselves in Whitechapel in 1888, they become part of a murder hunt for Jack himself-or should that be Jack ITself?

The IDW covers are always great. There is a new Seventh Doctor one being released soon. I'll put a thread up or it later

No spoilers from me, but I will say that I enjoyed it.  It wasn't my favorite story, but it was fun.  Tony Lee has a good mind for WHO.

Some interesting news here for fans of DW and Star Trek.

Bleeding Cool (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/02/10/scoop-doctor-who-star-trek-official-crossover/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BleedingCool+%28Bleeding+Cool+Comic+News+%26+Rumors%29) has squirrelled out news of an upcoming crossover that might send certain minds reeling. That in May, IDW are to publish a Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover series. Featuring The Doctor, Rory, Amy, Captain Picard, Worf, Data, Geordie LaForge, Deanna Troy, Will Riker and the rest. And that this art, featuring the Doctor, Rory and Amy on the bridge of the Enterprise is a cover that will be used in the series.

Doctor Who has never engaged in any such officially sanctioned crossover outside of the Doctor Who universe before. The closest was Dimensions In Time, a much derided charity telethon show which featured characters from the BBC soap opera Eastenders. Star Trek has also seen comic book crossovers with X-Men and the Legion Of Superheroes. But this is the first time that two major competing sci-fi franchises have been allowed to merge in any way before.

Of course this kind of meeting has been the subject of fan fiction thousands of times. But there’s a very special something when it becomes official.

IDW is attending the Gallifrey One convention in a week’s time. I’d expect this to be announced there.

Wow. Have to say I didn't see that coming. I thought a DW/ST crossover would always be relegated to FanFiction. I'm quite surprised the BBC signed off on it, to be honest.

I love the IDW comics, and there are far more than have been shown above, as they have been going since 2008, and I've read at least 78 comics.

There are lots more, but lack of interest meant that the thread died off and stopped being updated. The reason I posted about the crossover is because I figured it would spark some interest for the fans of both :)

There will be more info on that in the next post :)

In conjunction with BBC Worldwide Consumer Products and CBS Consumer Products, IDW Publishing will make history when two of the greatest science-fiction properties of all time come together in a comic book for the first time. The world’s most popular time traveler teams up with the U.S.S. Enterprise crew in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2, taking fans on an adventure where no man has gone before.

“By joining these two sci-fi powerhouses, fans will be taken on the ultimate adventure through time and space,” said Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products.

Launching in May, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2 will feature fan-favorite villains the Borg and the Cybermen as they create an unholy alliance resulting in potential disaster for all humanity. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.

“We are excited about this new adventure for the Doctor and the fact that he will be travelling with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his iconic crew. This is a perfect partnership for not only Doctor Who’s incredible fans, but also for the brand. We have just celebrated our most successful year yet. Doctor Who’s latest season delivered record ratings for BBC AMERICA and it was most downloaded full TV seasons of 2011 in the U.S. on the iTunes Store,” says Soumya Sriraman, executive vice president Home Entertainment and Licensing.

This eight-issue series will be written by Scott and David Tipton, the authors of critically acclaimed Star Trek: Infestation, with a helping hand from longtime Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, and will feature fully painted artwork by J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel).

Fans are encouraged to ask their retailers about the rare wraparound photo cover. Plus, artist Joe Corroney (Star Trek Ongoing) will provide a variant cover featuring the Doctor and friends aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Doctor Who and Star Trek are two hugely successful franchises that began as television series, and have expanded into a number of other media, including comic books, which continue to captivate fans all over the world. Nearly five decades and 1,500 episodes in the making, this is the moment that both Trekkers and Whovians have waited for all their lives!

STAR TREK TNG/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2 (prices may vary, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in May 2012.

Sounds fab - the Borg were my favourite villains of TNG (First Contact is my fave film of the TNG era for that reason). Can't wait to see how they meld the two shows.

Should maybe the DW/ST crossover get it's own thread?

Nah, I think it's fine in here for now. If people actually start coming in to talk about it based on having read it then maybe it can be.

Yea, you're probably right. It just only seems to be this one that's focused on these days. Not that I've seen any others lately to post about.

The deal between IDW & the BBC with regards to DW comes to an end this year. The partnership will round off with a special one off written by Paul Cornell:

Here is the press release:

Quote
IDW Publishing and BBC Worldwide will conclude their joint celebration of the Doctor’s 50th anniversary with the release of a Doctor Who special the final week of 2013. This oversize issue will be written by Paul Cornell and features art by Jimmy Broxton.

In this special one-shot story, a strange force flings the TARDIS and the Doctor into our own universe! Once here, the Doctor encounters a 10-year-old girl who happens to be a huge fan of the Doctor Who TV show. The Doctor grapples with being a fictional character as well as and a monster lurking at the girl’s school on the way to coming face-to-face with the actor who portrays him, Matt Smith!

BBC Worldwide and IDW have worked together since 2007. For the 50th Anniversary celebration, IDW launched a new ongoing series led by writer Andy Diggle, and the new Doctor Who: Prisoners Of Time, an extended maxi-series that spotlights all eleven Doctors. Additionally, IDW brought forth the first-ever Doctor Who crossover in any medium, the 2012 Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who event series Assimilation2. The BBC Worldwide/IDW partnership will conclude following the end of these 50th anniversary celebrations in December.

We’ve been extremely proud to be the American home to new Doctor Who comics these last six years,’ said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. ‘We feel like we’ve said a great many things with our comics – so it now feels like a good time to let Doctor Who comics regenerate along with the coming new Doctor on the TV series.

The BBC have promised as an announcement for 2014 soon, so I assume that comics/graphic novels will continue but from another publisher.

All association with IDW is ending. The BBC are announcing new partners early next year.

I suspect that if the BBC are expecting to announce new partners early next year, then they probably already know who that will be...

The most likely candidates are probably Boom! (http://www.boom-studios.com/) or Titan (http://titan-comics.com/), according to BleedingCool (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/07/24/where-in-the-world-is-that-doctor-who-comics-license/)...
