Title: In Memoriam
Post by: Aneurin on December 10, 2010, 05:04:05 pm
I know it could be seen as a little morbid, but I keep reading about people related to the show who have passed away so I though perhaps a thread where they could all be remembered would be a good idea.

Norman Taylor, who created the "visual howlaround" effect used in the Doctor Who titles up until 1980, has died

Post by: Vampyros Adric on January 15, 2011, 05:13:10 pm
I didn't see this thread and may I say RS, this is a wonderful idea.

The dissonance between the music and the title sequence was a piece of artistic genius. Like so many of those brilliant pioneers, Norman Taylor tends to get a little lost. TDD, thanks for letting us know about this.

I agree - every aspect of that title sequence is wonderful, and he deserves a lot more notice.

And he was damn good elsewhere - check him out as Arthur Holmwood in the original Hammer Dracula, for example.

Roy was possibly more famous for his roles as Zippy and George in Rainbow, but he will always be a big part of Doctor Who history.  Another sad loss...

Peter Halliday's death was announced today.  Born in 1924, he played Packer in The Invasion, voices in The Silurians and The Ambassadors of Death, Pletrac in Carnival of Monsters, a soldier in City of Death (the one in the Renaissance scene), and the blind Vicar in Remembrance of the Daleks.  He was also one of the leads in another classic SF serial, A For Andromeda in 1961, which also featured a very young Julie Christie.

Dennis Chinnery has died aged 85.

Dennis made three appearances in Doctor Who. His first appearance was in 1966 as Albert C Richardson, the  first mate of the Mary Celeste in The Chase. Ten years later he made his second appearance, this time as Kaled scientist Gharman in 1975's Genesis of the Daleks. He returned to the series for his third appearance in 1984's The Twin Dilemma as Professor Sylvest, the father of the twins.

In Doctor Who he was amazing as the War Chief, and Solon. However, as Nyki says, he was wonderful in a thousand other roles away from the show. I had the pleasure of meeting this immensely gifted and dignified actor many years ago. He had this wonderful magnetic charm about him and an intimacy that could keep an audience spellbound.

The Whoniverse has lost another star tonight. RIP Philip Madoc

Carrie John, although she was only in the show for that one season was such an important figure in the Whoniverse. She was a key part of the success of Pertwee's first season. She was never bitter about her departure from the show and was always happy to return to either Big Finish or narrate a classic novel.

She was married to fellow actor Geoffrey Beavers (who played the silky voiced Master in the Keeper of Traken). Away from the show she was a fine actor, playing a number of wonderful supporting roles (I particularly remember her from "A Very British Coup").

I had the pleasure of meeting her (not in a Who context) a few years ago and she was a lovely, charming lady. Once she found out I was a fan of the show (and of Jon Pertwee) she was happy to regale me with anecdotes about her time on the show.

A wonderful actor. A wonderful lady. RIP Carrie, we will miss you x
