Title: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: Tardis-Console on December 26, 2010, 11:23:55 am
It usually starts around April, right? When will we know the actual date? Do they usually announce it early or is it a last minute thing? We should do a guess the date game or something :P When is Easter in 2011? I'll call it at April 2nd. The earlier the better I say :)

Last year they didnt say anything about a date until about 3 or 4 weeks before if I remember rightly, so there is a bit of a wait yet. I'm going to call the 9th as a start date :)

Easter Sunday is the 24th I think, so it may start on the 23rd?

Matt said it was slated for the second week of April at the Cardiff lights turn on  Not sure how he would know that, unless there's another date they want a certain episode to fall on maybe.

If it started then, that would leave a gap of about 6 or 7 weeks before TW begins wouldnt it? I thought the BBC would probably air them all a bit closer than that

Keep in mind though that they plan to cut this series in two; so they could very well want to air the first 7 episodes of Doctor Who, all ten of Torchwood, then the last 6 of Doctor Who to round things off.

Assuming that, Doctor Who could start as late as May 14th.

This months DWM said end of April for part 1 and September for part two, though nothing specific in the way of dates

Watching it as new in September is going to be so wierd.

At least we are narrowed down to months now. Im going to call April 23rd because of Easter and September 10th because its the Saturday after the kids go back to school

The 9th would be a good date and lots of people are calling it but there isnt anything official as far as I know. DWM did say the end of April though so it probably won't be that early

I would have thought they'd want to tie the start of the series into a Bank Holiday weekend. Easter is the beginning of April isn't it so the 9th sounds about right. Unless they're going for the May Bank Holiday?!  :o

No - that would just be too cruel :'(

I'm thinking it will be tied to Easter which is actually late April this year - Good Friday is the 22nd.

It would be nice to have it on that much earlier, but I would prefer the later start so that the gap isnt so long. I have a feeling its going to be a **** having to wait in between. Especially with a cliffhanger

I agree with you to an extent that the gap should be shorter, but I don't think we should worry too much about the cliffhanger. I think its been majorly overhyped. It will no doubt be good, but other series have ended on cliffhangers that you have had to wait a whole year to be resolved with a lot less fuss. A lot of fans seem to be acting as though DW is the first show to ever do it. I suppose it will come down to what the actual cliffhanger is, but it will be no bigger than say Buffy dying in series 5, or Mulder being abducted in the X Files, or the revelation of the final Cylon in BSG. All brilliant cliffhangers but done way more subtly than DW. Anyway, this is probably for another thread

I've just been rewatching Twin Peaks (brilliant) and the final episode of all finished on a cliffhanger  :-[

I hope that it doesnt open on consecutive nights. Its going to be a short enough run as it is without cutting it down by another week

It's just rumours. It could end up being true but for now I'd pay no mind to it

I'm not sure I like the idea of it being two consecutive nights either :(

I wonder when the Beeb plan on confirming this up? Comic Relief night perhaps? :-\

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?

Well we never got that new trailer a few weeks back as rumoured, so CR would be as good a time as any to reveal it I guess.

If the News Of The World is right ( and I realise the irony of that statement :P ) we could be getting a sketch for CR - are they likely to show a trailer as well?

DWM have tweeted this:

Is anyone else getting bored waiting for the new series of Doctor Who? Come on Easter, HURRY UP! (Checks calendar. Still 7 weeks away. Gah!)

Rounding up to the nearest Saturday, that would mean a launch of 23rd April. If you had your money on that date you might just be cashing in :)

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?

Aww thats aaaaaaaaaaages! I don't think I can wait that long

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: Vampyros Adric on March 05, 2011, 10:51:14 am
This is based on no solid fact/rumour but the BBC does tend to like to 'double up' with episodes when it wants to make a big splash (Strictly Come Dancing) so it might be possible that they are going to use the Bank Holiday weekend to showcase the start of Doctor Who. I agree with the general feelings on this thread; April 23 is too long to wait and I hope they don't double up - this season is going to be too short as it is!

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: Aneurin on March 06, 2011, 12:31:57 pm
I agree. Double banking would be a bad idea considering the length, but I suppose for the BBC a six week series would make more sense than a 7, considering a lot of shows on the channel only run for that length anyway

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: The Doc on March 10, 2011, 10:22:10 pm
There is some whispers that BBCA will be airing the opener as a feature length, and if that happens they could be seeing episode 2 up to a week before Britain (assuming we don't air it on consecutive nights). Was just wondering how people, on both sides, felt about this?

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: poprockgeek on March 10, 2011, 10:31:02 pm
Honestly ... I don't like it. It's a British show - we should get it first. I can't imagine a situation where we'd see a major American show before it aired there.

Wouldn't that put them ahead of us all the way through the series then as well? If we don't get it consecutively that is :-\

Hmmmm, things appear to be nudging us towards a big double-headed, consecutive night opener for the UK. BBC shows (generally) have to appear first on the BBC as part of the licence charter (JNT aired The Five Doctors 2 days before its CiN debut in 1983 and was very nearly sacked because of it). The argument runs that the show was paid for by BBC licence fee payers so they should have first dibs on it.

So, if BBCA are airing it as a feature length then, unless there has been some unusual contractual shenanigans (which might well have leaked out), us in the UK are getting consecutive episodes!

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: MandyDuchovney on March 11, 2011, 11:42:48 am
I have to say that I don't like the way this is heading. I appreciate the episodes concerned were shot in America and that they probably want to milk that for all it's worth but airing any of it BEFORE the UK?

Allowing the rest of the world to air at the same time is progress - putting them before the UK is retrograde and quite possibly detrimental as far as I'm concerned to the focus of the show in the future.

I can hear the licence fee/who pays debates from here :o

It's been confirmed that America are airing episodes 1 & 2 a week apart, so whichever way we air them, the UK will still be ahead :)

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: missadric2 on March 19, 2011, 01:00:21 pm
Thank goodness I mean its still a pure british show and america are just trying to get their hands on it and try to see it before the 'creators' that's how I feel anyway :/

Jeff Mash's CV (http://www.spotlight.com/interactive/cv/M127878.html) says that ep 2 is airing on Sunday 24th, so it looks like we are getting 2 eps on the opening weekend after all

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: The Doc on March 25, 2011, 12:22:18 pm
I hope not. I know its the same amount of episodes in total, but its shortening the length of time in which we watch them. The longer the better I say

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?

Oh I agree - I would much rather have an episode a week :(

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?

They'll have to make sure they make it really clear in the advertising if they are showing it on Saturday & Sunday - not for people like us who will be totally clued in - but for more casual viewers. I know plenty of people who have got caught out when they've done that with other shows.

I'd rather one a week myself too  :-\

Its a bit of a balancing act isn't it? On the one hand I want the series to last for ages but on the other I'm not good at waiting and would happily watch all of season 6 in one go lol. I think a double header does make the launch seem like more of an event and I think it will do a better job of capturing those floating viewers who might forget otherwise. So on balance I think its probably a good thing.

And we do have Torchwood to get us through those barren summer months. To those of us who grew up in the Sci-Fi wasteland of the late 1980s this truly is a golden age :)

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?

DWM says 23rd and 30th of April so no double banker or weekend of Who. I'm kinda glad though tbh.

Will we be taking a week out for Eurovision?

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: poprockgeek on April 09, 2011, 10:09:01 pm
Hadn't thought of that but that may explain why DWM swaps from giving definite dates to dates with (tbc) after them.

Title: Re: Series 6 Start Date?
Post by: The Doc on April 10, 2011, 11:19:37 am
I'd say that since the first three are definate and the first TBC is where the EVSC falls, it is likely that DW will be bumped for the week. The reason I say this is because So You Think You Can Dance will have an elimination night on the same night, so it is more likely to take the slot immediately before EV, which means DW would have to start at around 4:45-5:00pm which seems a little early.

On another note, I've just checked the Radio Times website and Doctor Who is still not listed, but the only slot left unallocated is 5:25-6:45. I pray that they put it on no earlier that 6, but I have a feeling that it is going to be shunted around each week like last year due to SYTYCD. Let's just hope it gets a good lead in.

So often the case
