Looks like a good mix. I really want to see The Gunfighters to see if it lives up to reputation.

I do wish they wouldnt release them in box sets though. Especially when they are unrelated. The 'Earth' box set is stretching it a bit. Its even worse when they release something new with something previously released. They havent done it this time as far as I can see though

They have with Spearhead From Space/Terror of the Autons.  I really want Terror, but I already have Spearhead.

Planet of the Spiders and Ambassadors of Death/The Sun Makers get enthusiastic thumbs-ups from me.

Peri-Peri, this is a brilliant summary of all the releases. The only problem I have with it, is the amount of cash its going to cost me a small fortune;

The Planet of the Spiders - Must Have
SFS/Terror of the Autons - Must Have (for Terror of the Autons - in my top 5 all timers)
Frontios - Must Have (Christopher H. Bidmead - say no more)
Awakening/Gunfighters - I might be able to save money here..or at least not get it the second it is released; not brilliant stories (this screams b'day present from Mam)
Revisitions 3 - Oh dear, a box set I'm gonna be buying just for the extras. 2Entertain might as well just have my sort code, security code and mothers maiden name!!!
Solar System Box Set - Must have
Day of the Daleks - Must have x 10000
Paradise Towers - Wait till it gets reduced to £6.97 on a certain interweb site rhyming with 'Famazon'

I reckon that all adds up to a cool £136.97 - almost a weeks food shopping at Waitrose!!!

I do quite like The Awakening, but not enough to pay more than bargain-bin price for essentially two decent episodes.

I forgot to mention Day of the Daleks.  Not one of my favourite Dalek stories, but still essential.

Someone on Ebay is claiming to have every episode ever made (including the lost ones) on DVD and only wants £250 for them. This is a massive scam, right? I thought people weren't allowed to advertise stuff like that on Ebay?

They might have the reconstructions of the lost episodes, but that's not quite the same thing.  In any case, the reconstruction are free to download - I'm not sure, but I suspect part of the terms of them being alowed to use the soundtracks is that no-one makes money out of it.

Title: Re: DVD News
Post by: Peri-Peri on January 16, 2011, 04:40:52 pm
I'd pay it no attention Exterminate. There is one every couple of years promising to have the lost episodes but they never come to anything and I can tell you now that if they did, it would be at least £250 per episode, not £250 for the whole lot. Its probably some very clever wording by someone selling soundtracks and recons :)

Apologies if this has been said elsewhere but The Solar System box set is no more. Since announcing it's release, The Ambassadors of Death is (according to Mark Ayres on Twitter) proving to be a much more extensive restore than first anticipated. So the plan is to release The Sunmakers this year and the Ambassadors has been bumped to next year sometime.

Fabulous news about The Daemons - one of my top 5 ever stories

According to DWM, series 6 is going to be released in two formats on DVD & BluRay. Usually they release 4 vanilla sets throughout the year followed by the full collection around November/December, but this year they will release Series 6 Vol.1, a two disc set featuring 7 episodes in the summer, and then Series 6 Vol.2, a two disc set with 6 episodes in the autumn. The two mini sets will cost £24.99 for standard DVD and £29.99 for BluRay.

At the moment there is no word on whether there will be a 'complete' set.

I won't be impressed if there isnt a complete set. 2Entertain are calling it volume 1 & 2 of series 6 so we know at least they are counting it as one series (thank god), so they should release a single set too.

I'd say it's unlikely to be honest. They were still pulling the 'too expensive' card as little as two months ago. At the most I would assume it will be a stills recon. Still better than nothing though. And I can't help but secretly hope they are lying about it being too expensive in order to surprise us!

a) It's popular; b) It's one of the few remaining SJ stories unreleased (and definitely the best), and you'd think they'd take advantage of that; c) it was prominently referred to in NuWho, so easier to sell to fans who don't watch much classic.  So obviously they're going to hold it back  :-\

I'm not sure if PP has announced this elsewhere, but Deborah Watling announced this week she is due to record the commentary for a DVD release of The Ice Warriors. I'm not sure if that means it will get it's missing episodes animated or not but there are rumours that another 3 stories are due to be animated (aside from 'Reign'), so it's likely I guess.

Also, a special edition of Vengeance On Varos is being released as well to make up for the fact it was removed from the Revisitations II box set. The bonus features, if you can call them that, on the original release were rubbish so hopefully this one will have better extras.

Great to hear.  The Ice Warriors and The Tenth Planet are the only ones left with more than 50% surviving, so they'd presumably be chosen.  The Crusade and The Moonbase would be possibilities too.

It's been announced that The Mind Of Evil, expected in 2013, has been restored to colour.

That's great to hear.

I was doing a count yesterday, and I realised there are now only six currently complete stories not available at least for pre-ordering.  What are we going to do when they're all out?

How come it needed colourising?

How come it needed colourising?

The BBC's copy was junked, and the only copy available was one exported to a country (not sure which) that still only had black & white, so that was how their copy was.  They've done the same with a bits before (notably episode 3 of Planet of the Daleks) but The Mind of Evil and The Ambassadors of Death are the only ones from the colour era that need to be almost completely recolourised.

I think one of the main problems with Ambassadors though isn't the colour but the fact that it's a very poor telerecording that's damaged and they are having problems making it presentable in any form. It's an excellent story though so I hope they do get it done soon. Great news too about Mind Of Evil. I wouldn't have minding it staying in B&W but it would be great to see it in colour

Ambassadors of Death is (apparently) proving something of a pig to recolour and refurbish. Hope the don't run in to the same issues with Mind of Evil

I'm adding this in here, and I put it in the missing episodes thread too. It sort of fits both.

I read today that the restoration team are working on the material that was cut out of Planet of Giants but was kept in the archives, and are going to restore it to the four episode format that it was originally filmed and intended as. I'm assuming it will feature as a bonus on the DVD rather than the main story though, so we will still see the cut and edited eps 3&4 as just one episode, but will also have the opportunity to see them as two full episodes, too.

The Greatest Show In The Galaxy is being prepared for release. Trailers and extras have this week been passed by the BBFC. I will give it a thread once more info is known.

I think this is one of the most misleading names for an episode ;) Though it will be worth it to see 'that' explosion again :)

It has just been confirmed on Twitter today by the Classic DW team that the extras for Ambassadors of Death have just been cleared. So it looks like there is some movement on the release of this story. This makes me very excited as this will be a really cool addition to the DVD collection (and will mean it is a full house from Jon Pertwee's debut season and also marks David Whittaker's last contribution to Doctor Who).

They were going to release it last year but then cancelled at the last minute because the damage was worse than anticipated. I hope they get it out soon. It's a great little story.

Doctor Who Series 7 Part 1 is listed for sale on November 12th. If it's like the last two seasons it should include 2 episodes that haven't even aired at this point. Unless it's going back to the format for the first 4 series' of several sets. Or it may have 5 on one release and 9 on the other. Or three sets of 5, 5 and 4. Who knows. Seems early either way.

I think I'll wait for the complete set ... whenever that comes out. I don't mind if my cable box is chock full of Who  :)

Just been announced by @classicdw on twitter that the extras for Terror of the Zygons have been cleared for release. Can't wait for this one - it's an amazing story and desperately in need of a good DVD make over

A trailer for The Ice Warriors has been passed by the classification board, meaning a DVD release should be on the way.

Interesting. There's been no announcement about reconstruction or animation like they did with The Reign Of Terror, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. This is a good candidate for animation and if the Ice Warriors do return then the demand for it would be increased.

I'm not sure about Tenth Planet, but I know that a while back David Troughton said that he had taken part in a documentary about his father for inclusion on The Ice Warriors.

Tenth Planet, as far as I know, is being held back for a while, but a trailer was recently rated by the BBFC which all but confirms that Ice Warriors is coming. I imagine they will announce it once The Crusade is out so that it doesn't steal the thunder.

With HMV closing down I thought I would go in today and see if I could get some Doctor Who bargains and all they had left was a copy of Vengeance on Varos (for £22 :o) and the vanilla DVDs from the new series. No box sets of other classics at all. I was gutted

The animation/release of The Moonbase has been pushed back to some time in 2014. There has apparently been a delay in the animation, but those who believe in the return rumours think it may be related to that.

Easy jump to make, given the current rumours, but I think that this is just an animation issue.

Odd though, that they released a picture this week from the animation saying that they were just signing off on the heads, if it was meant to be out in 6 weeks. That's a very short timescale so shouldn't a delay have been announced months ago? I'm not trying to fan the flames of a rumour, but it's a bit odd
