21  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: General Spoilery Discussion Part 2 on: May 19, 2011, 01:45:08 pm
Synopsis for A Good Man Goes to War has been released. Still keeping spoiler tags on this as it contains a big one!
Amy Pond has been kidnapped and the Doctor is raising an army to rescue her as the drama continues. But as he and Rory race across galaxies, calling in long-held debts and solemnly given promises, his enemies are laying a carefully concealed trap.

In her cell in Stormcage, River Song sadly acknowledges that the time has come at last – today will mark the Battle of Demons Run and the Doctor's darkest hour. Both sides will make their sacrifices and River Song must finally reveal her most closely guarded secret to the Doctor.

I think that the main plot point of Amy getting kidnapped was pretty obvious, but this synopsis raises so many questions.

Who have kidnapped Amy? I think the obvious answer here would be the Cybermen, but I'm actually going to go for the 'Omega' soldiers/monks seen on set. Possibly headed by eye-patch lady? I don't know why, but I just feel it might be them. Instead, I actually think the Cybermen will be enlisted into the Doctor's army - it would be a great twist to add some originality to their appearance. Hell, given the spotting of Silurians and  Sontarans, my guess is that the Doctor will enlist the WHOLE Pandorica alliance. This would be awesome, and again add to the idea of the villains teaming up to tackle a higher threat (after all, the Jadooon's involvement in the Pandorica suggested the villains had aligned with the Shadow Proclamation anyway.)

Will the Silents be involved in this? Maybe the Omega group are somehow an army of the Silents, or maybe a cult to the 'silence' Amy's pregnancy has been suggested to bring. Hell, even the Silents could be part of this wider cult, suggesting someone else behind the explosion of the Tardis?!!?
So many questions! In a period when spoilers have been questioned, I can't help but think this synopsis only makes the waiting more fun!
22  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: Karen's Leaving on: May 18, 2011, 01:35:01 pm
I will be gutted if they both leave, mostly for one reason. I would LOVE to see their re-actions to the Doctor re-generating. Rose didn't know what re-generation was. The same is true with many other companions. Amy and Rory have a very good idea of exactly what it means so I would love to see how they react, and how the new Doctor would react to them.

We might still get to see this is River stays on as a companion, but I doubt she would have the same sadness Amy and Rory would as she seems to see all Doctor's as the same man.
23  Travels In Time And Space / The Rebel Flesh / Re: BBC italics mesage from the Fourth Dimension on: May 18, 2011, 01:23:53 pm
The 'may the Gods help him or maybe you can' combined with the Doctor addressing the audience does seem to indicate some sort of interactive element. What was that game with the weeping angels that they made a video of Matt playing? could it be part of that series maybe?
24  Travels In Time And Space / The Rebel Flesh / Re: BBC italics mesage from the Fourth Dimension on: May 18, 2011, 01:10:20 pm
I bet this is for some online game or some other spin-off rather than the actual show.
25  Travels In Time And Space / The Doctor's Wife / What if this episode had been 5.11? on: May 18, 2011, 01:06:46 pm
In his Q+A with the Guardian, Neil mentioned that in its original slot - right before the Pandorica episodes - Idris warned the Doctor about the events of the finale rather than the River in the Forest and, most interestingly, how to solve it (Quote: 'It meant that the TARDIS was no longer trying to warn the Doctor about the events of The Big Bang, or how he could get out of it.')

I found this really interesting for 2 reasons.

1. Just imagine how much more of an impact the Tardis exploding would have had - particularly for Amy - after they had met Idris. I think this would have really upped the stakes of the finale.

2. I can imagine Idris warning the Doctor would have clarified a lot of the events of the Big Bang. In my head, I imagine Idris criticising how the Doctor always has such a linear concept of time and emphasising the possibility - and requirement in the circumstances - of bending the rules of time in order to avoid destruction. The whole theme of 'time can be re-written' could have really been solidified in this episode and made some of the Big Bang more plausible (after all, the Tardis would know better than the Doctor the possibilities of time travel, so having his Big-Bang plan informed by Idris would have made a lot of sense).

All in all, I'm disappointed this wasn't in series 5 for the reasons above, and because I felt an amazing episode like this was needed to really hammer home the new era of Who in series 5 (sure, Vincent and the Doctor seems to have been given this mantle by many, but to me it went one Athlete song too far in moving away from the core of what Doctor Who should be, whereas the Doctor's Wife is a brilliant example of the show at it's best). The Lodger was not as bad as I thought it would be, and probably interested a lot of casual fans, but its conclusion was mindless. Sure the Faux-Tardis might come to be important, but still a throw away episode instead of a timeless, brilliant episode ala-Doctor's Wife.
26  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: Doctor Who on the Today Show (Potential Spoiler in clip) on: May 09, 2011, 04:19:18 pm
One thing that struck me was in the second clip
The woman asks the cyberman 'are you a good cyberman or a bad cyberman.' Now, this could just be ignorance on the woman's part and just saying it for laughs. Considering they have the Cybus logo, however, I'm wondering if there is two types of cybermen in this story and, maybe, one set is even 'good', or at least on the Doctor's side?
HOLY COW! Massive teaser concerning events in episode 13 gleamed from a American TV spot on Doctor Who via BlogtorWho
This American news broadcaster has a role in the show giving a news report. In it, she reports "Holy Roman Emperor Winston Churchill returned to Westminister Senate today on his personal Mammoth"  !!!!! Definitely timelines being joined together here. Also a picture of Churchill with his physician...the Silurian doctor from last series! Also has Romans and Cybermen (WITH Cybus logo?!) knocking about. This is huge, can't wait to see how it plays out! Definantly a case of everything being thrown in - could end up a bit too much or could be a brilliant, cost effective, way to conclude the big arc of series 5/6.
28  Travels In Time And Space / Day Of The Moon / Re: What did your family/friends think? on: May 03, 2011, 09:38:17 am
A friend of mine who laughed at the very thought of watching Doctor Who, thinking it was rubbish and 'for kids', has actually been converted by this. I am stunned! He has seen a few episodes of Tennant era and thought they were embarrassingly bad (planet of the Ood was one of them, so I tend to agree). He saw Day of the Moon, without seeing part one, and loved it. Said it wasn't hard to follow at all as the 'previously' gave the key points and he said everything else was made very clear (the only thing he didn't understand was the Doctor and Rory's 'Roman' conversation, but said that didn't bother him as he just assumed it was something that happened in an old episode).

I think his reaction really counters a lot of the critical responses. Hard to follow? He fully followed the second half, without watching the first or ever watching full episodes of the show in the past. He was won over because the show now has an brilliant tone, which bridges complex and dramatic plot lines with very witty humour. Personally, before Moff took over only some episodes managed this tone, while most just came across as farcical.
29  Travels In Time And Space / Day Of The Moon / Re: Should we pity Rory? on: May 03, 2011, 09:27:01 am
I'm pretty sure the whole element of Rory thinking Amy was talking about the Doctor was included to make explicitly clear to viewers that Amy isn't interested in the Doctor. Although Amy married Rory, some unfortunate jokes (and as I see it, they were just meant to be jokes) made the viewers uncertain of her feelings. Now it is very clear, and I'd guess Moff only added the uncertainty to the episode so that Rory (who, like the viewer, was unsure) was told directly that its only him Amy wants.

I was going to write a well-thought-out and sophisticated reply then, but got distracted by Peri-Peri's avatar. Shocked Now by brain isn't working...  Cheesy
31  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: General Spoilery Discussion Part 2 on: April 28, 2011, 10:05:42 am
Yes, and surely Moff wouldn't draw any more attention to the spoilers if they were accurate as, especially by assuring fans they are fake, mentioning it would only encourage fans to see what they are out of curiosity. I bet a lot of people would be mad if they looked the the spoilers they had been assured were fake only to find out they were true.
32  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: General Spoilery Discussion Part 2 on: April 28, 2011, 09:49:52 am
So it seems this evidence holds out (there is a video of the scene out there now), and that this is true. I first found out about this through twitter and now I feel like the whole series has been ruined for me, especially as this is the first proper spoiler I've heard. I'm really depressed now Sad.
Moffat's twitter message about the spoilers being 'nonsense' gives me some hope - but surely the video is enough to suggest Moffat is just trying to limit the damage.
Hope some of you can come and console me...Sad (it's not so much that I dislike the story, but sad that I know it).
I've not seen a video, but I have heard that there is one doing the rounds, and I believe that that doesnt have any actual sound, just shows Amy and River talking.

I honestly think that there is nothing to worry about. For two reasons:

a) If it is true, for arguements sake lets say its all true, then still all we know is some fragments of a very larger story. Its like having 20 pieces of a 500 piece jigsaw. You might be able to work out enough of image, but until you see it all in place you can't appreciate the bigger picture. There are loads of occasions in this, and other shows, where i have heard snippets and assumed the worst, but then watched in context, seen how well its been handled and loved it. Moff might give us the craziest story ever, but he will still write it well, of that I am certain. And if it is written well then we can't really complain. We can't like every story and every plot point.

b) The flipside of what I said above is that Moffat has spent 8 months keeping stuff from us. And this year her did a bloody good job of it! So why, on the very last weekend of filming, would he suddenly let something potentially this huge get spoiled, recorded and watched by fans. If indeed what set reporters are saying is true, then perhaps we should be wondering if this isnt maybe one of his dummy scripts. All news is good news they say, and if Moff set this up as a line, then all the little fishies are biting. DW fandom has gone into overdrive for the last 2 days trying to work out the conclusion of a story spanning three years. Think of the grin on Moffs face when all those extra people tune in, already knowing the answer, only for something completely different to end up on the screen. Moffat isnt stupid. I wouldnt be shy of putting money down that this is ALL his doing.

What you say makes a lot of sense, and yes I only saw that there was a video, so its likely it has no dialogue. It does seem very odd that this, almost ridiculously, spoilery scene (it seems to reveal EVERYTHING)  was filmed outside in public despite all the attention to secrecy throughout the series. And I do know that this will be handled well regardless. As I have said in my previous posts, for this to be true something very complicated and interesting will have to happen for it to make any sense. I'm gonna be really stressed until the episode airs now! Defiantly learnt my lesson about spoilers...should have listened to River Tongue

Aneurin :
They are some good points, and I think that if River is Amy's daughter than you are right: they may have been separated at some point. Possibly her baby is taken by the Silents/Cybermen in episode 7 and at the same time she finds out she grows up to be River. This would be an interesting twist as obviously you would want to get your child back, but doing so would erase River's life. Who knows, perhaps that (erasing Rivers time-line) IS the big twist Moffat has hinted at and the River we see in the final episode (reportedly in her Time of Angels outfit) is only there to have a Timey-wimey farewell to Amy before living a parallel (alternate universe) life. This would also allow for the Doctor's death to be re-written (assuming the girl in the Astronaut suit is River).

Still, this seems a sad fate for Amy (unless time is re-written somehow - but still that would be bitter-sweet for River). The point about the 3-month time jump is interesting and makes it seem even more odd that a 3-4 month pregnant woman will be swinging from a pirate ship in a BBC family drama in a few weeks time.
35  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: General Spoilery Discussion Part 2 on: April 27, 2011, 01:33:05 pm
I can't believe this new rumour. I feel it has to be a dummy script (would be supported by the fact a key spoilery scene was written to be outside, in a public place despite stuff I've read from Moffat saying that he had to set scenes inside so the characters/villains wouldn't be revealed) or just a fabrication. Here are some reasons I don't quite believe it, and some thoughts if it IS true.
Firstly, there is no way the Doctor is River's father for OBVIOUS reasons. But the main reason I don't believe it will be Amy's daughter is because it would be so GRIM. So Amy has a daughter who eventually becomes deserted in the far future (I can't see Amy and Rory wanting to live in the distant future). This daughter then kills someone and spends the bulk of her tragically short life in prison before dying at a young age. Not only does this happen, but Amy KNOWS all this will happen and so raises a child well aware of the tragedy that will befall her. I mean, River does enjoy her dangerous life style and as she says, she wouldn't change a moment of her time with the Doctor, but can anyone honestly say they would be happy knowing their children would lead this life? I don't know, it all seems very off.
Also, there is a lot of speculation whether Amy is pregnant at all. There is the strange sickness and out of the blue revelation, but also the fact that she shows no sign of pregnancy in future episodes. In the very scene where this revelation has come from, Amy is said to ONCE AGAIN be drinking wine - something the editors would surely remove from the script if the character was pregnant. Finally, would Amy really continue to go on life-threatening adventures knowing she is pregnant (even running a lot and being flung around the TARDIS wouldn't be a very good idea) and I seriously doubt the Doctor or Rory would allow it.
The only way I see this happening is if Amy had the baby in an early episode and perhaps it is lost/stolen only to be raised as River Song (much like Angel's child in the Angel spin-off). The series has become more edgy in recent years, but having a pregnant women drinking wine and consistently putting herself in danger (swinging from ropes and sword fighting with pirates in the next episode for example) is surely a step too far. SOMETHING must not be as it seems.
Seriously, the only thing I can imagine that would make sense is that the Silent's use their alien equipment to remove the embryo from Amy and protect it (in the Astronaut suit?) untill it grows so they can use River as a trap to kill the Doctor. This is stretching it.
Still, all these points make me think River isn't Amy's daughter, or at least that it isn't as straight forward as that.
36  Travels In Time And Space / Mission To The Unknown / Re: When Is A Spoiler A Spoiler Too Far? on: April 13, 2011, 12:51:03 pm
I don't mind knowing the overview of the plot at all. For example, for new DW opening eps. I know where it is located, some characters in it, what the monsters are called/look like and that there is an 'impossible astronaut'. That is pretty much all I know and I'm happy with that. I don't feel that ruins it at all as I have no idea how all these things will play out. I did, however, find out that Rory died in the Silurian eps last year before I saw the episode, and it really did spoil things for me. There is a very solid line between knowing the situation the characters find themselves in and what actually happens to the character. One is just something that will up my excitment (I'd actually rather know a bit, and speculate, rather than just turn it on and go "oh, there's pirates") and the other is revealing what will happen.
37  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: The Minotaur on: March 31, 2011, 03:27:43 pm
It's definitely possible that this is some sort of re-telling of the Minotaur myth (no stranger to Dr Who!). I think we can take all clips from that episode with a grain of salt though. Its already been mentioned that peoples nightmares come to life, or something similar, in this hotel. Maybe this is just a generic monster or maybe, because of its labyrinth like features, someone 'dreams up' the Minotaur which then chases them (a bit like in Ghostbusters when their thought generates the embodiment of the evil - maybe we'll see a return of the Basset Allsorts man again ala Staypuft Wink )

Also, am I the only one getting flashbacks to the Judoon with this? Maybe some sort of re-tooling of the mask?
38  Travels In Time And Space / Day Of The Moon / Re: who does amy shoot? on: March 31, 2011, 12:30:08 pm
I think it has been noted that Amy is in her episode 1 attire. The fact Rory is in episode 3, so it is either not him or it is insignificant (i.e, it misses, does no real damage). The trailer obviously makes it out to be very important, but it did a similar thing with the doctor firing a gun last time and...it was at a ball Tongue Maybe Amy just shoots an adversary (maybe the Battlestar Gallactica guest star guy?) and it causes a bit of a rift between the Doctor and Amy?
39  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: Discussion thread for 'Space' & 'Time' (mini-eps for Comic Relief) 18/03/11 on: March 28, 2011, 03:08:54 pm
I think Moff has used the Christmas episode and the CR mini episodes to try and reinforce Amy and Rory's relationship. Last year we got a lot of development about their relationship, but the overall feeling was that, sexually, Amy seemed more interested in the Doctor. I think now it's being reinforced that Amy and Rory are very much an...active couple. I could really do without this to be honest. What they get up to in the Tardis should be something left to schoolyard titters or jokes among parents, not actually dealt with in the show. Hopefully this will be left behind now.

As for Amy flirting with herself, I think it was a funny idea for Amy to be impressed with what she sees as I like having a confident character as a companion. But to actually be flirting with herself does kind of imply a very different side. Yes, Captain Jack doing it would be in character, but with Amy it seemed like the joke came before the character. Still, comic relief kind of excuses that, and it certainly seemed to have got a lot of attention (i.e. trending on twitter) so as long as its dropped now, no real harm done.
40  Travels In Time And Space / The Crusade / Re: General Spoilery Discussion on: January 28, 2011, 12:32:56 pm
The Sun are reporting that Hugh Bonneville has been cast as a Pirate Captain.

Quote
Hugh said: "When I was a boy, the music and Jon Pertwee's doctor had me peeking out from behind the sofa every Saturday.

"I am thrilled to be appearing in the new series.

"Although the pirate's demons are different to those of the young lad who watched through his fingers, they are no less terrifying - this new adventure is not for the faint-hearted."

Not the best of sources, but the quotes seem to be fairly direct rather than from a mysterious 'insider' or 'friend of' so this could be legit?

Those quotes are far too eloquent to have been fabricated by the Sun imo! Would also fit very well with wanting the episode to be "outside".
