1  Travels In Time And Space / The Greatest Show In The Galaxy / If any UK folks happen to be in the Herefordshire area... on: October 06, 2011, 10:03:16 pm
...you might be interested in this - tucked away in the village of Bromyard, not far from Leominster:

We were on our way to Hay-on-Wye last weekend and spotted the sign on the main road...it's a tiny little place but has some really cool stuff on display.  We spent a pleasant afternoon having a geeky chat with the guy who owns the place.  It's only open weekends over the winter, and is going to be undergoing some rearrangement to fit new stuff in in the near future, so you may want to ring and check, but it's well worth a look. Oh, if we get working time travel, the fun part will be who gets to try and stop people from going round altering the timeline willy-nilly.   (My mother met my father as an evacuee during WWII, so if anyone actually succeeds in bumping off Hitler...'bye, folks.)

Stephen Hawking must be rather worried...he's been claiming for years that time travel must be impossible simply because he doesn't like paradoxes.   They're checking the results very carefully now, but who knows?

Just wondered what anyone thought of this...

Agreed.  I'm child-free myself, but I know lots of mums, and no way would any normal parent be reacting the way the Ponds have reacted to the loss of their child, timey-wimey stuff with Mels and adult River notwithstanding.  They'd be moving hell and high water to get that baby back in their arms, and the fact that they haven't been, is deeply suspicious.   It's either very poor writing from the Moff (who, don't forget, is a dad himself), or it's intentional and will be dealt with at some point...it's just that there's not long to go.

(Do we have a thread anywhere for remaining questions from series 6, or even series 5, that have yet to be answered?  I'm off to look...)
5  Travels In Time And Space / The God Complex / Re: What Would Be In Your Room? on: September 18, 2011, 03:26:47 pm
Mine would have a full-length mirror in it, and when I looked into it I'd see myself reflected as my mother.  (Long story...)

Exact conversation last night:

Me: 'She's got 'next companion' written all over her.'
Husband:'Yes, but I don't reckon she's going to make it to the end of the episode...'

Bummer.  I think she'd have been rather good.

Aw, darn, I thought they'd at least give people further afield the chance of seeing it...OK, that answers that one.
8  Travels In Time And Space / Let's Kill Hitler / Re: The Kiss That Changes It All on: September 02, 2011, 12:44:58 pm
Here's a suggestion...(not mine, someone in the Guardian blog mentioned it, I think, but it sounds interesting...)

The Doctor has destroyed his own race.  He often bemoans the fact that he's the last surviving Time Lord.  Melody/River isn't your actual Time Lord, but she has Time Lord DNA, apparently.  We could theorize that the two of them could have viable Time Lord babies.   Wouldn't he just love to reboot his own species (to relieve both his loneliness and, perhaps, his guilt)?  Or even, given the nature of timey-wimey stuff, to start it off in the first place...paradox!  This is of course if someone else hasn't been engineering events so that that happens...but maybe that would be making things slightly too complicated.  Who knows? Cheesy

Mainly, that this is the first time we've had any inkling of the existence of Mels...I know she said she didn't do weddings, but to go by her schooldays, if there was anything exciting going on in Deadworth, sorry, Leadworth, like in 'The Eleventh Hour', she'd have turned up and driven a bus into the middle or it all or something.  Unless the whole thing of her growing up with the Ponds represents an altered timeline...

I went last Sunday!  And, no spoilers, but it was huge fun.  Most people were taking their kids, but nobody batted an eyelid at a couple of old geeks like hubby and me.  I would say kids of age 5-10 or so would love it...some of the very young kids were getting a little bit over scared, though.

Piece of advice for those thinking of going: Kensington Olympia Tube is off down a little branch line, and trains between there and Earls Court aren't as frequent as on the main District line, so check your times to get there within the half-hour slot on your ticket.  There's also not much in the way of eating places locally, so you might want to sort that elsewhere in town.

Another thing...they had leaflets for a 'Design your own monster' competition, and they said the winner would have a model of their monster made and displayed at DWE from next February.  As the Olympia one winds up in November, I'm guessing this means it may be going on tour in future, so those of you who can't get to London should perhaps keep your eyes peeled for future locations...

Update: definitely going to try and cosplay NorCon (Norwich, in September).  Got something 'close enough' to River's Pandorica jacket, and pants (have to sew the stripes down the sides).  Need boots, belt, holster and gun....oh, yeah, and that wig... Grin

15  Travels In Time And Space / Doctor Who In The News / Matt Smith on Alan Carr on: July 16, 2011, 08:42:49 am
(Is this OK here?  If not, mods, feel free to move it - anyway...)

Matt Smith was on Alan Carr - Chatty Man last night on Channel 4.  You can still watch it here:
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/alan-carr-chatty-man/episode-guide/series-6/episode-5-

Some Who stuff, a bit of Northants chat (with them both being from those parts, I understood precisely none of it Huh?), attempted bribery with Bombay Mix, and the DW theme as you've definitely never heard it before courtesy of fellow guests JLS.  A bit bonkers.   Cheesy
16  Travels In Time And Space / The Greatest Show In The Galaxy / Re: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!! on: July 14, 2011, 08:01:39 pm
Today's Radio 4 afternoon play was 'Best Interests'.  It was about what happens when a young man collapses at a tube station, gets taken into hospital, and decisions about his care turn awkward because it turns out he has learning difficulties...but he's also a Doctor Who fanatic, and there are a lot of familiar references.   It's still on BBC iplayer for the next week if anyone's interested in listening.

There was also a reference the other day to an art exhibition in an ex-nuclear bunker in Bosnia, and someone described said bunker as being like the TARDIS.

You can't escape it, can you? Smiley

Bought a pair of shoes today.  The kind of shoes you can't run away from Daleks in.  For the kind of girl who doesn't have to.  Wink

Completed scene 2 of a script tonight.  Laughed at own fish-related joke.  Am probably more than slightly drunk.
19  76 Totter's Lane / The Little Shop / Re: Edible Doctor Who on: July 08, 2011, 09:11:09 pm
Those are astonishing.  I've seen some fun DW themed cupcakes out there, and I think someone did a gingerbread TARDIS.

BTW, can anyone remember the Dalek ice lollies they did back in the 70s?  Is it me or did they bring them back at one point?  Everyone else seems to think they tasted vile, but I rather liked them...

20  Travels In Time And Space / The Greatest Show In The Galaxy / Re: OMG they just mentioned Doctor Who!!! on: July 07, 2011, 09:56:42 pm
Another Radio 4 mention today.  You and Yours was looking at the Harry Potter movie and talking to some of the crew who worked on it, and they asked one of the costume guys how he got started, and he said his first job was on Doctor Who.  Pity I didn't catch his name, could have looked him up...
