Ace. No contest.
2  Travels In Time And Space / The Wedding of River Song / Re: A sneaky Reboot of the Franchise (many many spoilers) on: October 02, 2011, 12:00:38 am
I hope it does mean a return to the Doctor-as-unknown-stranger feel of the classic series. Not really sure how that would work though - surely everyone will just say "But I thought you were dead" then return to business as usual?
3  Travels In Time And Space / The Wedding of River Song / Re: The Tribute to the Brigadier on: October 01, 2011, 11:56:56 pm
It was a very touching little moment. Like Nyiki I loved the fact it was woven into the storyline rather than just a little throwaway mention. And the way it was done really showed how much the Brig meant to the Doctor.

Awesome from start to finish. It's been a fantastic season and this was the perfect finale.
5  Travels In Time And Space / The Mark Of The Rani / Re: The Time Lords - Bring Them Back? on: September 29, 2011, 11:55:36 pm
I don't much like the idea of bringing them back en masse, but one or two others who somehow managed to escape the Time War could be great. We've had the Master, so why not the Rani, the Monk, the War Chief, Omega, Romana, or even Drax?
6  Travels In Time And Space / The Mark Of The Rani / Re: The Rani on: September 29, 2011, 11:50:19 pm
It would be great to see her again. Whatever Pip & Jane Baker's faults, they created a great character in the Rani, and I'd love to see her in the new show - hopefully with rather better writing than she had in her one other DW appearance so far!
7  Travels In Time And Space / The Mark Of The Rani / Re: Pip & Jane Baker on: September 29, 2011, 11:45:52 pm
They had a tendency to write lines that probably looked great on paper, but just never quite sounded like realistic dialogue when spoken aloud. This story, for me, was by far their best, and it still had a few lines like that.

As for their other stories:
Terror Of The Vervoids is reasonably good, although far from great.
The Ultimate Foe is awful, although with all the chaos that was going on with the scripts for that season it's far from entirely their fault, and it's quite impressive they managed to make it make as much sense as it did.
Time & The Rani didn't really work as a new Doctor story. It had been written for Colin Baker then re-written for the (as yet uncast) new Doctor. If Baker hadn't been sacked I suspect it would've worked out much better than it did, although that doesn't excuse how bad the writing for the new-Doctor scenes was. (plus it would still have looked pretty awful, although you can't blame them for that)

So, no, Pip & Jane Baker are far from being among DW's best writers. The Mark Of The Rani is still a good story though.

It was a nice idea, but they just didn't have the effects budget to make it look convincing. Not sure I agree that it should've been cut though; with 80s Doctor Who you always expect the occasional dodgy visual, and it was such a nice idea that it was worth keeping, even if you can tell it isn't real.
9  Travels In Time And Space / The Mark Of The Rani / Re: Poll: Rate & Review The Mark Of The Rani on: September 29, 2011, 11:33:51 pm
Four from me. A good solid story. Not perfect, but a lot of very good stuff going on. Great performances from all involved, an unusual and interesting story, and some excellent location work.

I thought the Master (and I hesitate to criticise the amazing Anthony Ainley) was a bit of a third wheel to be honest.

I agree with this. I always love to see Anthony Ainley as the Master, but I don't think he was needed here. He didn't really have much to do, and the Rani was more than strong enough as a character to not need him there too. Just felt like he was being thrown in because they hadn't used him for a while rather than because he really needed to be there.

Pyramids of Mars

Nope, didn't get what that was all about at all.
12  Travels In Time And Space / Meglos / Re: Poll: Rate & Review Meglos on: September 25, 2011, 01:45:52 am
Two from me. Not one of the very worst, but pretty feeble. There were a few interesting ideas in there, and Jacqueline Hill was brilliant (although, like everyone else, I'd have much preferred to have seen her as Barbara), but the whole thing just feels half-hearted, and Tom Baker gives possibly his worst ever performance.
13  Travels In Time And Space / Meglos / Re: Tom Baker on: September 25, 2011, 01:41:17 am
This story is a prime example of the fact that he simply stayed too long. There was plenty for him to do in this story, playing both the Doctor and the villain, and I'm sure if he'd got the chance to do that a couple of years earlier he'd have really taken full advantage, but here he just didn't seem interested.

The Deadly Assassin
15  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: Poll: Best Story Of Series 6 So Far on: September 25, 2011, 01:17:55 am
Getting harder to choose every week, but I still went with The Doctor's Wife.
16  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: The Lodger VS Closing Time on: September 25, 2011, 01:15:26 am
Love them both, but I thought Closing Time was slightly better.
17  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: Craig on: September 25, 2011, 01:04:27 am
I liked him in both episodes. I've little time for James Corden as a person, but he's a pretty good actor and was particularly good in Closing Time.
18  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: Too Gay on: September 25, 2011, 01:00:59 am
Personally I couldn't care less. But we're talking about a show that used to be produced by Russell T Davies and had Captain Jack as a recurring character, and they think it's suddenly become too gay now?
19  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: The Cybermen on: September 25, 2011, 12:58:01 am
That's always the problem with recurring villains. They have to lose every time so how do you still make them scary? Same thing happened in recent years with the Daleks, and in the 80s with the Master. Personally I still enjoy seeing them though, despite my various niggles with the way they move/sound in nu-Who.
20  Travels In Time And Space / Closing Time / Re: Stormageddon The Dark Lord on: September 25, 2011, 12:52:59 am
Wouldn't put it past Steven Moffat to be thinking about villains for series 8 or 9 already, so who knows?

In the meantime though, a great little joke that really worked well all through the episode. Probably lucky that I'm highly unlikely to breed since I'm now by no means sure that I'd be able to resist the temptation to call the child Stormageddon! (or Stormagette for a girl)
