W is for....

WOTAN

WOTAN was one of the first artificial intelligences created on Earth by Professor Brett. Its name stood for Will Operating Thought ANalogue and faced off against the First Doctor, Dodo, Polly and Ben.

6  The Leisure Hive / Satellite Five / Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on: September 12, 2013, 03:17:28 pm
I just saw this. Thought there'd be a few here interested.

Warner Bros. announced on 12th September 2013 that J.K. Rowling would be making her screenwriting debut with 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', the first in a new film series which is part of their expanded creative partnership with J.K. Rowling. The films will be inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, and will feature the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander.

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of 'Fantastic Beasts', realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”
7  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Companion VS Assistant on: September 12, 2013, 12:02:07 pm
Personally, I call them companions, and whenever someone says assistant it always makes me think automatically of anyone Pre-Rose. I think the waters got muddied a bit with Ten picking up all the waifs and strays, so now the way I work it out is this:

Companions - People who travel long term with the Doctor, either by his request or by not kicking them out when he found they had sneaked in, etc. Such as Barbara, Jo, Ace or Amy for example.

Assistants - People who help out either as a one off or sporadically, so people like Astrid, Adelaide etc, but also encompassing people such as Wilf, River, Mickey and Rory.

There's a little reference in this story to the fandom companion VS assistant debate and what the person travelling with the Doctor should be called, so I was wondering what everyone else thought?
9  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Don't Trust Him.... on: September 12, 2013, 11:56:16 am
They do things like this a lot and it's always pointless. As the audience we don't see the Doctor any differently and the people in the story always end up being on his side anyway, unless they weren't to start.

Shows how much attention I pay. I don't even remember it going off.
11  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Clara on: September 12, 2013, 11:53:42 am
I thought she was great all the way through and I'm really enjoying the dynamic that she has with Eleven. Shame it's going to be for such a short time.
12  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Reappearances on: September 12, 2013, 11:52:36 am
Someone's even made a comparison elsewhere, so you're not the only one to pick up on it. Good catch.

Awesome idea, but a hell of a stretch!
13  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Spinoff Potential? on: September 12, 2013, 11:52:08 am
Not for me. I think it's easy to get excited over characters and want to see more of them, but as much as I liked this story I'm not sure I'd want to see them in another episode of this, let alone their own series.

I've gone with Hide, too, but I don't understand the hate towards Rings. I quite liked it.
17  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Poll: Stories Featuring The Occult on: September 12, 2013, 11:43:32 am
Spoilt for choice with that classic selection. Of the ones in the poll thought I'm going for Hide. I was torn between most of them but that's the one I feel like I most want to watch again.
18  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Ratings, Overnights, Audience Share & AI on: September 12, 2013, 11:42:29 am
It's sort of hard to understand the ratings these days. On one hand you have iPlayer which is accounting for the lower overnights and officials, but even then it's still not adding up to what it was a year or two ago when iPlayer was also being counted. I know all shows shed viewers, but this seems to have been quite a drop.

20  Travels In Time And Space / Hide / Re: Mistakes & Inconsistencies on: September 12, 2013, 11:38:00 am
The Doctor draws a circle on the floor and it changes size (that's the blooper part) but why? what was the point of drawing it? Did I miss something? (that's the inconsistency part)
