1966 - 1969

"when I say run, run!"

Portrayed by; Patrick Troughton (1920 - 1987)

He has been nicknamed the "Cosmic Hobo" as the impish Second Doctor appeared to be far more scruffy and child-like than his first incarnation.

Mercurial, clever, and always a few steps ahead of his enemies, at times he could be a calculating schemer who would not only manipulate people for the greater good but act like a bumbling fool in order to have others underestimate his true abilities. Some times, this appears simply as a joke, such as in The Tomb of the Cybermen, where he finishes the archaeologists' calculations behind their backs, but in other times, it seems much darker.
In The Evil of the Daleks he coldly manipulates Jamie in trying to rescue Victoria (thus setting in motion the human factor tests) and is unsympathetic when Edward Waterfield tries to apologise for his collaboration with the Daleks.
But despite the bluster and tendency to panic when events got out of control, the Second Doctor always acted heroically and morally in his desire to help the oppressed.

This Doctor is associated with the catch phrases, "oh my giddy aunt!" and "when I say run, run!", and is noted for playing the recorder.
In early stories he also demonstrates a fondness for hats and other types of headgear, mainly sporting a distinctive stove pipe hat when outdoors.

If William Hartnell established the Doctor as a character, it was Patrick Troughton who set the pattern for the way his incarnations could be different and alike at the same time.  He was a superb actor, and it's tragic that so many of his stories fell victim to the Beeb's vandalism.

The Second Doctor is probably my favourite of all and the one that all the others have taken very obvious elements from. Patrick Troughton was amazing in the role every single time and the biggest travesty of all is that so many of his stories, and brilliant ones at that, are now missing and probably lost forever

I couldnt agree with this statement more. Patrick Troughton worked absolute wonders with the role and it is such a huge shame that so much of his brilliant work as the Doctor is missing and probably will never be seen again. The BBC have a lot to answer for!

Thought I'd pop this in here. Den of Geek's tribute to Patrick Troughton as the Doctor.

He is also vain, ego-centric and quite mad

Patrick Troughton is an amazing actor who brought every ounce of his charisma and skill to the role. I cannot think of a single fan of the show who does not have very high regard for what PT did. I also think it is interesting that most of the creative artists involved in the show (actors, writers, directors) all seem to hark back to Troughton as the essence of what the character of the Doctor should be about.

PT is wonderful. His body language and expressive face make for a fantastic Doctor and actor. His "oh crumbs!" nature is juxtaposed awesomely with the kind of rage and/or indignation he can produce in stories. Nyki is right, Troughton was just as important as Hartnell in maintaining the series.

Today, the Kaled race is ended, consumed in a fire of war. But, from its ashes will rise a new race. The supreme creature. The ultimate conqueror of the universe. The Dalek!
