There seems to be a lot of people who come here and look, but don't sign up and join in, or if they do sign up, don't always post. Would it be an idea to have a section where guests can actually post as guests, so that if they have questions or reservations about joining in or signing up, then they at least have a place on the forum to ask, and the mods can then answer any questions. Some of the members who don't normally post might even post in there to explain why they don't join in. I know some people like to just read and nobody has to join in, but it seems like quite a high ratio guests-members and members-posters.

The Doc is away at the moment so this is just by way of an acknowledgement to your idea.
As you have said we can't force people to join/post and there will always be an element that like to lurk - whether as guests or members. With this in mind I'm not sure how likely it is that anyone will post to say why they are not joining/posting if such a section existed. Or if the forum itself allows for such an area for guests.
Having said that I'm sure The Doc will be more than happy to look into the matter for you on his return.

It's a good enough idea in theory, but I don't think it would really make much difference. We regularly get upwards of 100 guests but I think a lot of them come here simply to view as apposed to posting and joining in. In the past when we have been closed off to non members, we have seen the member count go up but not much difference in the member/poster count and many people simply signed up in order to continue lurking without the need to post. As you said, we can't force people to join in and they will no doubt post when they see a topic that takes their fancy

Theoretically if they're not posting they might not post unless they were invited to explain the lack of posting... I didn't think there was an area for discussing reasons behind posting. I normally just use Twitter for writing my thoughts except for some sections here.

I don't get what you mean? If they aren't members then they aren't able to post anyway

The second part that was brought up was "if they do sign up, don't always post." So some members or guests might come by just to read and not always to post.

Oh right, I get what you mean now I suppose people will post when there is something they want to comment on, or a topic they want to discuss

I don't think this is unusual. On most forums I belong to, no more than about one in four members actually become active. I know I've joined forums before on a whim, looked around a bit and then not got around to going back. You can lead a horse to water, but it's got to put on its own bathing suit.
