This is the thread for discussion of the overnight ratings, the official ratings, audience share, AI, iPlayer hits and anything else to do with ratings for this episode.

The initial ratings, share and AI will be from the UK, though these may be expanded upon later to take into account figures from elsewhere in the world such as the US and Australia.

If you want to see how this episode rates in comparison to previous series, then you can find that information HERE (add link). Please feel free to discuss the ratings and share your thoughts on how well this episode is doing. For ratings relating to other episodes, please check the relevent threads.

If you need any help understanding how the ratings and AI is calculated, then feel free to ask and either a moderator or fellow member will advise you.

DOTM got an overnight rating of 5.4m with a share of 30.5%. Its a fair bit lower than last week in terms of share, which is the more important figure.

It was, however, still the second most watched television show of the whole day

Which is the same as last week. Let me guess BGT was top?

Thats correct.

In my 'glass half full' attempt to defend the ratings, once again Dont Scare The Hare didnt manage to break the 2m mark, and the show that came after didnt fair much better. Lots of things can be taken into account such as bank holidays and the good weather, but the biggest problem seems to be that Who is scheduled between two shows that just aren't popular and the BBC seem determined to use it to prop up other shows, which is doing is a disservice. Nearly 4 million people turned over specifically for DW and then most of them switched off again once it had aired. If the BBC stopped using DW to garner rating for its other shows and put out a decent saturday night lineup like in previous years, they would be able to use the lead in show as a spring board to get more people watching and those 4 million who tuned in specifically could be adding to a three or four million that are already built in. DW isnt in danger because its bad, but is in danger because the shows around it are. That's my take on it anyway.

This is BBC one showing the 15 minutes before and after the show. It shows that there is very little interest in whats coming before and after, but that the audience kept growing while the show was on.

17:45 ….. 1.7 (12.3%)
18:00 ….. 5.0 (29.7%)
18:15 ….. 5.5 (30.7%)
18:30 ….. 5.7 (31.0%)
18:45 ….. 2.9 (16.7%)

Yeah I agree with all you said.

And that awful ad they put out this week with poor old DW shoved in with those 2 shows made me cringe. My fear is that casual viewers saw that & related DW to those poor quality shows - not because it's bad but due to taint by association. The Beeb were probably hoping for the reverse - that DW would lift the perception of the preceding & following shows but I fear it may have backfired on them.

This is one of the best shows the Beeb have & they really need to show it some respect - fast!

Its not a great figure, admittedly, but its also nothing to worry about. It was still head and shoulders above everything else in the slot and only beaten for the entire day by BGT which always rates highly. The officials and iPlayer stats will put paid to any worries, I'm sure.

As for the schedule though, Doctor Who should be the jewel in the crown of Saturday nights and the BBC is treating it very badly. They have stopped trying to get it ratings and build its own audience and instead uses it to prop up other shows which it would seem they are more invested in at present. That shouldnt be what the show is about and I think perhaps Moffat needs to be having words about it.

Its on a little later next week so that might give it a boost and hopefully something will be worked with the schedule before its too late.

Here are the overnight graphs. I merged the other thread with the last episodes ratings thread and will do them individually from now on otherwise it will get confusing when the officials come out.

Ignore the Share chart above. I mixed in officials from previous years with overnights from this year so it doesnt really mean anything!

It isnt great, but that could easily reach 7.5 looking at the huge bump that TIA got. And for an episode 2, 7.5 would be awesome. Nothing to worry about at all Smiley

I think, right here is the reason we got the mid-season split. Glorious weather, people on the back of an 11 day holiday, crap either side of it - its a miracle anyone tuned in. The fact that this was the second most watched programme of the day proves that the weather etc was a significant factor.

I actually think the time-shifted figures will give this a significant nudge towards the 7million mark and strangely enough for Victor, I don't think these figures are too bad given the timing of the showing. I know it is only anecdotal but the majority of people I know were out and about and recorded the programme on series link and will watch it later.

After seeing the officials for TIA, this episode has nothing to worry about at all. IT just goes to show how insignificant these overnight ratings are becoming.

Awesome graphs btw PP

Its not great but it could be worse. One of the Angel eps from last year got 4.5 on overnights but did nearly 7 on officials. People really will, as proved with TIA, still seek out the show if they cant watch it when it airs. Its still as popular as ever

I'm not even going to try and defend the ratings. Everyone else has done that well enough. Instead I will just say, awesome charts again Smiley

I love a chart Tongue

I think that the officials have a lot riding on them now. That overnight figure has let out the doom mongers and naysayers who think that the sky is now falling in, so hopefully the officials will prove them wrong

Brilliant again. The general audience seems to be taking to the new series rather well. The first two episodes of the last series only got 86.

I should say that 86 is also awesome, I was just making a comparison Smiley

Love the colours on the chart Smiley

Anyway, I am here because I just saw this:

Doctor Who Scares Off Another 1m Viewers

Its honestly one of the silliest articles I have read. Its basically saying that the ratings are down this week on the overnights compared to last week, which is true, but then it goes on to compare this weeks overnights to last weeks officials in order to prove that people are switching off.

I hate when the press make pluck stuff out of thin air in order to make things seem worse than they are

*sigh* Kind of what I've come to expect from certain papers these days!

Love how they keep going on about the time slot - Moff's responsible for the content not the time. It's not his fault the BBC have decided to put it on earlier than normal.
