Just found this, it's SFX magazine's response to that Mail article http://www.sfx.co.uk/2011/05/03/pure-golder-why-doctor-who%E2%80%99s-falling-overnight-ratings-are-a-good-thing/

See, now thats more like it. Its like what lots of people have been saying here about how the overnights don't mean as much and that people are watching it in other ways. The figures speak for themselves, but I guess it is easier for The Mail to not bother checking the facts and make a report about a 'failing' show instead

The Mail are notoriously anti-BBC so would probably have found a way to print a negative story even if it had gotten 10m on the overnights

Articles like that are just so stupid though, aren't they. Its all just a blatent tactic to make the show look like it is failing, ragardless of the actual facts. My favourite part was:

Overnight figures for that first episode were down by almost 1.5million on the equivalent episode last year, although ratings released yesterday showed it had a final total audience of 8.86million. Even so, the apparent downturn in popularity....

Its good they don't let the figures get in the way of shoddy reporting! Especially when they compare overnights to officials and call it fact!

Grrr

SFX are tweeting final ratings for this as 7.3million - a timeshift of 1.9million. Can anyone confirm? I would if I knew how  Smiley

Yep thats right. I was just coming in to say that BARB has updated early again.

DOTM  got an official rating of 7.30m and a share of 36.7%. Thats a rise of 1.91m from the official. Fourth biggest increase ever

Technically its in 5th place of the six episode 2's, with the Shakespeare Code rating below it, but comparable to the second episode of a Doctors second series (I am aware how much I am stretching this) Matt Smith episodes are proving more populare in the ratings than Tennants did for his second series. This isnt a Doctor comparison, just a way of pointing out trends and obviously 9 didnt get a second series so it isnt comparable.

Also, when you compare it to episodes that aired within the same dateframe in previous years as apposed to where they appear in the running order, this episode ranks 4th of 6

See well thats a good thing then. I think the fairest way to compare is how this doctors second series rates against other Doctors second series, and this one is growing which is a good thing. Even with all the other series out of the picture though, this is a great stand alone figure. Very few shows that aren't soap operas get those kind of figures.
