Quote from: The Discontinuity Guide
'There will be a two minute interregnum preceding the commencement of irradiation.' Robert Holmes' most optimistic script, where he defends humanity (the instinctive Rogin) against insect-like conformity. The Ark in Space rises above the dodginess of the effects by treating its themes so seriously it's a possible influence on Alien. Philip Hinchcliffe's new style is vastly different to Barry Letts', summed up by the alien way that Noah holds up what, in other circumstances, would obviously be a plastic glove over his hand.

I've noticed the similarities to Alien as well.  A fine story.

A bit hyped up for me, but at that time I think I was having a bad day and Harry's sexist attitude aggravated me. I know it's a good story, but I think I need to rewatch it before I say much else. Though I always remember this story as "that one with the bubblewrap". I do like Baker's speech about the human race and the acting of the crew member who is taken over by the "bubblewrap stuff".

Today, the Kaled race is ended, consumed in a fire of war. But, from its ashes will rise a new race. The supreme creature. The ultimate conqueror of the universe. The Dalek!

I found the 'optimism' a bit silly in the end, and of course there just had to be a scene where the guy sacrifices his life for the Doctor's. And all that "remembering his humanity" stuff.  It wall all laid on a bit thick and a bit contrived. Not that its a bad story, however. I would probably just about give it a 4.

I've been watching this this morning after probably 2 or more years since I last saw it, and I had forgotten just how good I find it to be. I think it is one that sometimes gets ignored and some of the effects get a bit dodgy, but it's really worth revisiting if you haven't for a while.
