THE HAND OF FEARby Bob Baker and Dave MartinStarring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen.Production Code: 4N
First Transmitted: 1 - 02/10/1976 18:10 2 - 09/10/1976 17:50 3 - 16/10/1976 18:05 4 - 23/10/1976 18:00
'Don't you forget me... Till we meet again, Sarah.' Underrated by sad people who think that even Philip Hinchcliffe must have produced one duff story per season, The Hand of Fear is engaging and well acted. Lis Sladen puts in her best performance (she makes a great villain), but Judith Paris steals the show as the (female) Eldrad. It all goes a bit pear shaped in the final episode, with Stephen Thorne doing his best Brian Blessed impersonation and Eldrad eventually tripping over the Doctor's scarf. [/size]

Ok I think this is in the right place... Anyone know if this is any good? I'm thinking about buying it on the web for just over £5? So if it worth it?

I personally love this story. I think it's brilliant and Sarah Jane leaving the TARDIS is so sad but it makes you smile too. The story itself is pretty good. Its another 'quarry' story, but that shouldnt put you off. There are lots of subtle references to this story in SJA and her appearances in DW. for the price you said it is, its more than worth it

Ah ok, I shall buy it... Hopefully it'll come this weekend. I absolutely loved this story and bought it as soon as it came out - so i'm slightly jealous of that price lol Its a brilliant performance by Lis Sladen and has some genuinely interesting ideas behind it. The story rattles along and I think you'll love it

I have it on dvd but recording it as well. Mark Gatiss tweeted about it today & referenced the closing scene. Have they added a tribute to it I wonder?
TFD Mod Edit: Merged the two topics for this story.

I love this story and it was great to see it on BBC4 tonight. I have the dvd anyway, but that's not the point! I'd actually forgotten just how good it is. A cracking story that moves along at a tremendous pace, some great ideas behind it, very good visually (great location work at a real-life nuclear power station) and both Tom Baker and Lis Sladen absolutely on top form - hard to think of any story where they were better. All I need now is the self-discipline to wait until tomorrow to watch the second half! And, on a related note, this has inspired someone to set up group on Facebook to try to persuade the BBC to show more classic eps: www.facebook.com/pages/Get-BBC-Four-to-show-More-Classic-Doctor-Who/172723179447746?sk=info

It sucks, but they have already said in the past they will be very choosy about when they show the classics because there is no money in re-airing them, but they make a mint from the DVDs. They didnt say it in quite the same way, but that was what they were getting accross

The thing is though if they actually aired them occasionally it might be the catalyst that gets new fans seeking out the DVDs. Some new fans, myself included, have sought out the Classics in any way they can because they want to know the history of the show. Others who haven't actually might if it was on TV. I don't see that it would do much harm to show a story every now & again. That aside, I was watching this story for the first time & I'm loving it so far. Can't wait to see the concluding eps tomorrow

WhovianNet have tweeted what I guess are the overnights for each part of this:
Part 1: 203,000 Part 2: 276,000 Part 3: 168,000 Part 4: 294,000
Not sure how that compares with how the channel does normally but I'm guessing that could be quite good.

I was reading a few days ago that in the same slot, they usually get about 50-75,000 watching, so they are brilliant figures. I think that if nothing else, this was a great, if not sombre way, of drawing people into the classics who may not otherwise have watched. I personally really love this story and it was great that they decided to air it. The last episode, in particular Sarah Janes leaving scenes, are some of my favourites from the era and I loved the reference to it in School Reunion

Yeah I went straight from watching it to watching School Reunion. I've kept the recording so I watch it again as well. Loved it.
Will see if I can find the final figs as they were only the overnights.

Oh cool, thanks Lots of people I have spoken too who watched it for the first time think it was great, so it's a shame they don't show stuff like this more often to draw people in, but as said above, its not a money maker so its not in the interest of the BBC, which is a shame
