Ok so I watched this episode again last night, and first time I ever saw it I wasn't too keen on it, but watching it last night again, when Rose talks to the Dalek to me that's just heartbreaking. Plus I have to admit that Eccleston's performance is pretty good the way he acts toward the Dalek. What do others think?

This is one of my favourite Who episodes ever. It was so subtle and yet so powerful. It was the first Dalek story since the show returned and it set a precident that wasn't lived up to because every Dalek story since got bigger and bigger but just was never as good. Everything between this story and Journeys End was pretty naff in terms of Dalek stories, but then it got naff again with VOTD in S5. I think its good they are taking a rest now because they are losing a lot of their menace. They need to come back in a good solid story like this one

I love it, and I think Aneurin sums the situation with the Daleks up perfectly. This is easily one of the top 5, maybe even top 3 Dalek stories ever.

Best Dalek episode is Genesis of the Daleks but Rob Shearman's Dalek is not far off. I adored Dalek and thought it got the return of the Daleks pitch perfect. Every other Dalek story in Nu-Who has been Daleks-by-numbers and frankly if I don't see a Dalek all season 6 I won't be too worried
(all of this comes with a big IMHO)
Totally agree with Aneurin and Peri-Peri

DALEK is definitely a delight to go back and watch on occasion. I think the 9th doctor comes off almost maniacal in a way. His delivery of the line, "I watched it happen, I MADE it happen" is haunting to the viewer. I think it brings out the alien nature that the doctor has. He can be a wonderful example, but he also has a dark side as well. We had seen it to an extent in THE END OF THE WORLD when he let Cassandra "die". This story does show that a single dalek is something to be scared of and I don't think I have been scared of them since. The Emperor dalek was creepy in THE PARTING OF THE WAYS, but as for a story, it doesn't touch DALEK.

The Dream Lord raises the point that makes this episode so special for me - the carnage that is caused by ONE Dalek. I'm a huge fan of the Daleks, as you all must know by now, but most subsequent Dalek stories seem to rely on many of them to get the job done. This ep proves it's not really necessary - sometimes the subtle approach is better. And truly terrifying!

I have added a poll to this thread because we are collecting data in order to rank stories. Please could you take a minute and rate this story? You do not need to give a reason for your vote, though obviously feel free to do so as it is a good way of bringing discussion back to older threads

Full marks from me. Doctor Who returned to the Daleks with a bang and hit a peak that has never been matched since in NuWho. This story, if nothing else, proves just how deadly and menacing and scary a Dalek can be without needing to unleash millions of them onto the world in a watered down story. This is perhaps one of the best Dalek stories ever in DW. In my opinion of course

I have given this a four. Its a brilliant story and the Daleks were at their best here, but again Adam lets it down for me, as does the Van Statten guy. I'm also not massively keen on Dalek stories as a whole, but I can appreciate the times, like this, when the story is good enough to give it a higher mark than I generally would have.

3 from me for this one. I like the story, but I think it is perhaps a little overhyped. I liked the Dalek aspect of it and the story between Rose and The Doctor, but most of the other characters were really annoying and I wasn't keen on the setting either, though I guess it did make sense for the story.

This story set the bar really high for the return of the Daleks. It was a wonderful, brilliant and thoughtful piece of writing. No Dalek story since has matched it in the use of the naughty pepperpots. A 5 from me

This gets a four from me. I like it a lot and it is definately the best Dalek centric story since the show returned in 2005, thought I do wonder if it is perhaps a little overhyped as there are a few things wrong with it that people often seem to overlook.

I stated my reasons why I love this ep higher up the thread - I know that it has some flaws but they are not enough for me personally to deduct anything - full marks.

Gonna buck the trend here and give this story only a 1. A Dalek having an existential crisis? Give me a break. Might have sounded like a good idea after a couple of pints down the pub but trying to change the image of the daleks is a mistake. The whole point of the daleks is that they don't change, hence they can only deal with the universe by total domination. Might have worked with a Cyberman circa The Tenth Planet which were less martial in some respects. I found the whole thing absurd.

Were you not paying attention? They weren't trying to change the Daleks. The point was the conflict that one Dalek faced after absorbing human DNA and as a by-product of that, the human emotions it was left with. The point of the Daleks is they have no emotions at all (until it suits a story). Because of the resulting mish-mash of programming and emotions it ended up disgusted with itself. Whether or not the story is liked is one thing and up to the individual, but absurd is the last word I would use to describe it. Absurd would have been to bring the whole race of Daleks back like that without Rose' intervention or any explanation behind the change in their personalities.

OK, I forgot about the absorbing human DNA part Maybe I would appreciate it more more on a rewatch. Even so, gonna stand by my score until I do. The effect of human emotion on daleks has already been done better, in the Second Doctor's "Evil of the Daleks" when the Doctor sends them all mad and even to a certain extent in the very 1st Dalek story (remember the Dalek's "bad trip" when trying the radiation drug?). Remember also Vaughan's "emotion" machine" by which he sent a Cyberman mad in "The Invasion". Their "humanity" is gone for ever. This being so, I still find the premise of this episode daft, and what might have been moving (and was well-enough acted) appears in the given context ridiculous. But if you don't have a problem with the premise, I guess your view would be quite different.
