So, those Silents looked horrible and the way they do you in is pretty gruesome too. The voices are also a bit terrifying. But the big question is, are they too scary? This is based on the fact that this show is geared towards children. What are your thoughts?

I always liked being scared as a kid - for me, as an 8 year old - i would have loved it. Would have made me feel all adult and mature for watching something so scary I'm not sure I'd have let a 3-4 year old watch it though?

At the moment I would say scary enough - not sure if we've actually seen the worst of them yet!

Yes, I agree with VA - perhaps a PG for very young children, but it's just the kind of scary kids love. There's a lovely quote by G. K. Chesterton about fairy stories, which I've always thought fits DW perfectly "Fairy stories don't teach children that dragons exist - children know that dragons exist. Fairy stories teach children that dragons can be killed."

Ah I didn't find them scary at all! I'm obviously hard! No I think if my cousins (9 & 10) watched it they'd be pretty scared! I can soon tell you though when my friend's brother ( gets round to watching it, as he's scared of the Weeping Angels, but my guess is that if he's scared of them he'll be scared of this.... But no way do I think they're too scary!

Are their faces masks or CGI? Months ago when we had the set report pictures we saw River on the window ledge surrounded by men in suits, but they were normal men. In the trailer she is surrounded by Silents. Could be seperate scenes I guess, but it made me wonder

If it's cgi it's bloody excellent work.
I figured it was practical apart from the mouth bit when that wifey was killed?

Watching DWC they appear to be masks though the actual change in the face is likely CGI - they kind of showed a little clip but never went into it (it's possible the feature of it may still be to come in a later DWC).

I think its different scenes. In the set pics she was standing there while the MIB were pointing guns at her.
Could it be maybe that they are messing with her head or something so its really the men, but she sees Silents, or the other way around?

I think they were very much borderline, but in a good way. If I was a kid I would be terrified but to the extent where I would want to watch more

I know that they were scary enough that I would not let my 3.5 year old daughter watch it. She would be completely freaked out. Probably ok for older kids though.

My friend said her brother (9) was really really scared of the Silence and had nightmares.... must have been pretty scary then?

I think they are pretty scary, I think I'm going to have to watch it with the kids I teach rather than leave them alone with it. I tell them that Who is a fun scary show thou, that being a little bit scared is good and all part of the show. They both get a little scared during episodes, but then laugh at each other for it as soon as the moment passes, which is how it should be

My little cousin was apparantly terrified, which I am glad about because he is a little sh1t. He is also a wuss so not a good indication for this. I think I would have been creeped out as a youngster but in a giggly way rather than not being able to sleep way

Personally I think the part that may be scariest for adults, the loss of power from being made to forget, goes way over little kids heads. My boys, who are 5 and 8 were scared in some of the scenes where there was a Silent *justrightthere* but didn't really get the super creepy mind **** at all. But over all why should they? they are small people who live in the moment already and have very little in the way of true personal power. forgetting is just forgetting which makes the action more exciting later but didn't seem to really mean anything to them on a deeper level.
I actually think I was way more twigged by these episodes then my kids were. They were much more scared of The Weeping angels and The Vashta Nerada which were more the sort of Big Bads they could wrap their brains around I suppose.

I thought the Silents were just scary enough Its nice, for once, to be complaining that the monsters on Doctor Who are too scary (please open your Hitchhikers Guide and on the index page type "The Myrka")
