Season 25, the penultimate season of Doctor Who, began airing on October 5th 1988 with Remembrance of the Daleks and ran through to January 1989 ending with The Greatest Show In The Galaxy with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred continuing on in the roles as the Doctor and Ace. Once again the show was moved around the schedules, this time airing slightly later into the Autumn and moving to a Wednesday evening slot.

A huge improvement overall on the previous season. I was torn between Remembrance and Nemesis but I went with Remembrance in the end.

Without a shadow of a doubt the best story of that lot is Remembrance. I do love Silver Nemesis too though.

I've gone with Remembrance but it changes between that and Silver Nemesis depending on my mood

Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and The Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

This was the season where it all miraculously clicked into place for Sylvester McCoy and, indeed, the whole production team. Andrew Cartmell had learned the lessons well from the first season and continued to bring in really young, ambitious and gifted writers. They also had one of the best, all time companions in Ace. McCoy had perfectly found his voice as the Doctor and Cartmell had started to weave in some mystery into the backstory (I often think that McCoy plays this role like he is the last of the Time Lords). And the result of all this magical chemistry is a wonderfully balanced season with two good, solid stories (Happiness Patrol and Greatest Show), one rip-roaring pantomime of a story (Silver Nemesis).
But, predictably, the top of the tree (And the one I voted for) is one of the best Doctor Who adventures of all time. Remembrance of the Daleks was penned by a wonderfully gifted writer (Ben Aaronovitch) and had a brilliant supporting cast. The way in which the Doctor emerged as "The Puppet Master" had never been so explicit in Doctor Who before. One of the charms of the show had been the haphazard way in which the Doctor would seemingly stumble from one crisis to the next and finally working out a solution. But this was different. The Doctor had set the events in motion and was watching them play out. It was more like an episode of Colombo - we knew the Doctor would win.. we just wanted to see how he would do it.
A wonderful season - and the best Dalek story since Genesis.
