See, this is what happened to Adric, happened to Harry Sullivan, happened to poor old Turlough, happened to Mickey. The TARDIS isn't big enough for the Doctor and another male with a female companion.

The only time it has ever worked is with Ian Chesterton and Jamie McCrimmon.

And Wilfred Mott.

I should add that I really really like Rory and think he should be full time companion but three is just a little too much of a crowd at the moment

The difference then though is that Ian came aboard equally with Barbara and Jamie was there before Zoe and Victoria. Rory, as well as the others you mentioned, are sort of Third Wheel type characters who never quite got to step into the limelight with their female companions. If Rory came in first and then Amy was introduced later it could be very different

Funny, I was watching the Castrovalva dvd earlier and they were talking about overcrowding and how the writers found it difficult to write for 3 companions....which is why they killed off adric  Roll Eyes

I'd like just a male companion please, for a lil while anyway... Canton will do lovely thanks Tongue

Bored of the females, love having Rory onboard, like I loved having Jack on board in S1 too Smiley I think it works... with a better script

I wouldn't argue with that. I actually wouldn't mind if they kept Rory. They could make that the arc: a whole season of Rory and the Doctor looking for Amy. It would have a logic and it would explore the Doctor's and Rory's relationship. They'd have a new bond and a cause to fight for!

The problem is, it could only be a one season deal otherwise you'd get very fed up. But I think it is a plausible way of keeping Rory and really adding some depth along the way. Mid season you could have him do a little wobble and meet a Jen type character who he might fall for, you could have ordinary adventures along the way while they looked for clues as to where Amy had gone, you could have an illusion where he thinks its Amy but really its a salt monster...

I think that would be the most plausible reason for keeping him on without Amy. And I think it could really work too. Even if it was only for half a series it would still be great. And you know, more Rory Roll Eyes Tongue

Unfortunately due to this >>> http://thedoctorinthetardis.freesmfhosting.com/index.php/topic,1565.0/msg,44307.html (potentially huge spoiler) I think it's unlikely!!

Without a doubt. One of the things I wish most for the show is that we could see him just as a regular guy travelling with the Doctor without the relationship subplots. Its a shame we won't get to though

I do think that they need to be more fair with how they deal with the companions. It wouldnt hurt them to have a story centered around Rory that doesnt also revolve around Amy. I think the fans would appreciate it and I think the character deserves it

They definately need to work more on making his character more central instead of just leaving him in the background. They don't seem to be making enough of an effort to make him more than just 'Amy's bloke'.

Stephen and Ben were given a fair crack of the whip too, and I thought Harry was handled well for the limited time he was there - my complaint with him was he was cut off far too quickly.  It really seemed to be in the JNT era that they lost the ability to handle male comanions.  Mind you, they wasted Nyssa too.

Generally I would say that he has been handled pretty well, but this week they really did underuse him

I love Rory and I'll be very annoyed if what I've heard is 1000% true. Sad I also heard an interesting theory about Rory. I can't seem to get the link working, which sucks. It's good theory too. Sad

I think next week will be his time to shine. We will see him going all badass and looking for Amy I suspect so it will be more centred towards him
