James Robert "Jamie" McCrimmon, son of Donald McCrimmon, a piper like his father and his father's father, was one of the longest serving companions to travel with the Doctor and the longest serving male companion to date.

Jamie first met the Doctor in the aftermath of the English defeat of the Jacobite Rebellion at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746, during which he was the piper for Clan McLaren. Jamie and his fellow Highlanders faced either being hung, butchered by the Duke of Cumberland or sold into an unsurvivable seven-year slavery on the plantations in the West Indies. After escaping the gallows, an unsure Jamie was urged to follow the Second Doctor, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright into the mysterious TARDIS.

More often than not, Jamie wore a kilt with a red tartan. He was often chided for continuing to wear his kilt, even in situations where it was too cold to wear it. It was sometimes jokingly referred to as a dress or skirt, to which he would take offense.

Jamie was simple and straightforward, but he was also intelligent, practical and full of common sense. It was these qualities which often put him ahead of his companions. Although he didn't understand the TARDIS, he was enthusiastic about it. His journey was a voyage of discovery; and almost everything he experienced was new to him. He struggled to understand many things, yet he battled against this and thoroughly enjoyed his adventures.

Jamie saw the Doctor as a friend and mentor. He loved to travel and enjoyed his adventures. He learnt a lot through his experiences, but also believed the Doctor needed his help.

The above is an outline of the companion for those who are not familiar with Jamie because we are watching out of order, but this thread may also be used as a general discussion thread for the character.

You're probably thinking of Ben. He was a sailor and was a companion at the end of the first Doctor's and start of the second Doctor's times.

I have seen two stories now with Jamie and I have to say that I adore him.  Maybe it's just the accent (I am a sucker for accents!) but I really think he is a great character.  He's funny and smart and I like how he pulls off the kilt even though he is picked on for it.

Interestingly, if any of you have read or heard of the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon, Diana has stated that the Doctor Who Character of Jamie, who was at the battle of Culloden, was the inspiration behind her Jamie in the book series.  In the book, Jamie is Jamie Fraser (coincidence that the actor who played Jamie had a first name of Frazer?) and he is a highlander who also ends up at the Culloden battle.  Just a random and interesting Who connection Wink

Jamie is great in this as always, but for me I think he has been better in other stories. There was a lot going on here so I suppose the need to have him doing lots was less, but although he was still great there are far more stories where he really shines out

I like Jamie. I love his relationship with the Doctor and I love how protective he is over his fellow companions, particularly Victoria, but I do think he is perhaps a little overhyped. Perhaps its because of the length of his stay or maybe it is a nostalgia thing because a lot of his stories are lost, but I do think there are lots of far better companions.

He isn't one of my favourites either. I like him, but there are quite a few others that I prefer. Most of them are from the 60's and 70's

I've always liked Jamie - I love the way that being being basically clueless about what's going on doesn't stop him putting everything into what he needs to do.
