Assuming the little girl we see regenerate at the end of DOTM is River/Melody, do you think its possible we will get to see more of her incarnarnations as a way of telling more of younf Rivers back story?

The reason this question came to me is because I was just checking out the spoiler summery and in episode 13 we see a young Rory and a young girl called Mels, which I figured could be a young Melody? We will also be seeing her as a grown up in her 20's played by Nine Toussaint-White so there will be enough story surrounding this girl for us to be seeing her at various points in her life and I thought perhaps it is River in a different incarnation. If that is the case, we may also be about to meet next years companion? It would certainly allow for us to be seeing a younger River without having to lose Alex Kingston doing all the older River stuff. What do you think?

On the one hand this would be great because we would essentially be having River as a companion, but on the other hand it wouldnt be AK which is what I would want. This of course though is all based on the assumption that Mels and Melody are the same person, which is a good link if true

I am all for seeing other incarnations, though I would hope that they would be mixed in with Alex still appearing. If River was to become a companion though, I would only want to see Alex Kingston. She deservs it

If River Song can regenerate, why did she die in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead?

Did she already reach her last regeneration? It's still unsure if there is a limit to regenerations any more, so maybe not.

Is it possible that she regenerated after the Doctor left, and sneaked out un-noticed?  Unlikely, as the Doctor was handcuffed near to her for a while after her death, so surely he would have noticed if she started glowing yellow and changed faces...

Of course, River Song's consciousness was uploaded into a computer program at the end of the episode, so maybe that prevented her real body from regenerating somehow.

She definately died. She didnt regenerate, if she even can, because she couldn't, which is why she wouldn't let Ten strap himself up. She said that he would burn up and he wouldn't be able to regenerate and so I assume the same would apply for her.

She says to the Doctor when he goes to hook himself up to the machine:

"It'll kill you stone dead! ... You'll burn up both your hearts, and don't think you'll regenerate!"

I think therefore the same would be true for her.

I have a tiny feeling that all might end up being rewritten anyway

I think it will all end up getting rewritten, but if the character really is called Mels it seems likely it will be Melody!

Additional library quote "You would't have a chance and neither do I"

Potentially interesting, but why would young Mels be with young Rory? I mean, if of course they have scenes together, I mean, if there are flashback scenes then it would make sense if she was someone different... we could be getting Moffat-ed (polite version), like with Jenny...

Although, going along the other route she is... they are going to fit this all in? Huh?

Oh plus I was rewatching the library eps and River when talking at the end about Time being rewritten, said something like, "Not these times, not one line."

Posting before I forget, not sure if this is the most relevant place mind  Roll Eyes

My point is, it may be her in the suit, but just on a different time line, like everyones been saying - ish

No way. I wouldnt mind an episode or something where we see her as a child or something, but as a grown up I would only want to see AK in the role

Well, to tidy this topic up, we have now seen all her regenerations.

She was the little girl (Day of the Moon), Mels (Let's Kill Hitler), and River.  As to confirmation, in LKH she said she hadn't done this (regeneration) since she was a little girl in New York.  And Amy told her in hospital she'd used up all her remaining regenerations ("Mother, I had to try").

But she seemingly kept enough energy to make herself look younger as time passed, just to mess people up (nice touch).

Do wonder when we'll have that last scene for River, where she won't even appear (and mods feel free to edit if you wish):

Doctor, all dressed up, but sombre,  Companion, asking him where they're going.  He says, just him, as he escorts companion out of the Tardis.  At Tardis door, companion asks okay, where is he going.  Smiles, says picking up River.  Smile turns sad.  Taking her to see the Singing Towers of Durilium.  Closes the Tardis door.  As he passes the console, River's Sonic Screwdriver pops up and he pockets it.  Tardis dematerialises as scene fades to black.

Awww you old romantic Smiley

I also wonder (and feel free to shout at me if this topic has been mentioned elsewhere) but how many regenerations does a "Child of the TARDIS" get? Is it the same as a Time Lord? In LKH it was made clear that she used "all her regenerations" to save the Doctor? Has she given some to the Doctor?

Anyway, back to the Singing Towers of Durillum... Smiley

Oh, I have the whole scene written in my mind... that was the potted version.  Assumed Amy and Doctor 11 (because he has already shown he can cry, just like River said when the Towers sang, and Moffat will probably wind up her storyline at the end of this series).

Don't want to post the full version because:
1) it becomes fan fiction, isn't canon, and never happens
2) if Moffat sees it, UK is probably like US and he won't touch the idea because BBC would be afraid I'd sue (which I wouldn't, because I want to see the scene and don't need any bleeding formal credit, so would gladly relinquish all rights to them).
3) No idea where to post or if anyone wants to read a daft Yank's ramble.

Just got to hope Moffat will come up with the same idea and film it.

I suspect we will get some sort of validation of these events but I wouldn't let it stop you posting your own fan-fiction on it Smiley I (and I know lots of other people on the forum) really like to read different ideas. We have a place on the forum "Fanatical About Who" where you could post, if you would like to share Smiley
