I've always thought, though I don't know if it is explicitely stated anywhere, that the Robomen my have been the inspiration for the Cybermen. They have a lot of similarities and while I don't think they are an early version or anything like that, they definately have a cyber feel to them and I wonder if perhaps their appearance here inspired the actual Cybermen. Anyone know?

I've always thought the same thing, but as far as I know their was no acknowledged connection that has been mentioned in interviews or whatever. Maybe some of the older viewers will have more insight into that though

That's never occurred to me, actually, but it's an interesting idea. I'm not aware of any actual link, but the Robomen are certainly a few steps down the same road.

I think it all taps in to the same latent 60s fear of technology replacing humanity (I have a friend who wrote a PhD thesis on this very idea). You only have to look at the second Doctor's continued references to "Stupid Computers" to see this theme run through a lot of 1960s Doctor Who. Robomen were the start of this - Cybermen (created by Gerry Davis and scientist/writer Dr Kit Peddler) were an extension of this. Its all part of the way in which Doctor Who will (eventually) turn out to be a fascinating historical document as well as hugely entertaining

When I saw this episode I thought the same thing. I wondered if this was the start of the Cybermen and thought it was strange that it was never mentioned that they were a creation of the Daleks

Haha expect a fair amount of that throughout the early classics Its a good OP and a great point. A bit of tin foil and they would pretty much have been the exact same things, so I think there is a good chance that they were an inspiration, though I havent seen anything official to confirm it

I-par-tic-u-lar-ly-liked-the-way-they-were-speak-ing It makes me laugh that all the actors from the time would speak like that to represent aliens and robots. It's like what kids do when they are playing

Weren't they going to do a Dalek and Robomen figure set? I'm sure I read that somewhere.
Voices aside, I think that the robomen were a great idea. There is something very eerie about zombie type humans, which is essentially what they were. I like the link to the Cybers too. It would be cool if they turned out to be some sort of early form, though it's unlikely

It is possible but I doubt it... because the Cybermen are cool!!! (see my rant in the "Rate and Review" section, for more information on my views of this story.)
