Tegan Jovanka was an Australian air stewardess trainee who wandered into the Fourth Doctor's TARDIS when she mistook it for a genuine police box. She quickly became embroiled in the events surrounding his regeneration, and soon found herself a somewhat unwilling passenger of the Fifth Doctor. She was one of the few companions to have parted company with the Doctor, only to return for a significant number of adventures. She was joined in her travels by Adric, Nyssa, Turlough, Kamelion, and, briefly, the Brigadier.

Her relatively long tenure of service onboard the TARDIS belied an ambivalence about wishing to travel with the Doctor. Until her final glimpse of the TARDIS, she vacillated between wanting to stay and wanting to go. She returned to work as an air stewardess in 1985.

Tegan was stubborn, loud, and direct. She once described herself as "just a mouth on legs". While she often bickered with her fellow travelers, her intrinsic honesty and morality proved useful. The Doctor once noted that these qualities made her a good coordinator. She was also more likely to detect a threat to the Doctor's safety than her fellow companions.

Of her fellow travelers, she was likely closest to Nyssa, whose nature was in many ways the precise opposite of her own. Though morally indignant at the Doctor's apparent unwillingness to save Adric's life, she was genuinely saddened when Nyssa left. On Deva Loca, Tegan argued with Adric after he suggested she was too weak minded to defy the Mara, and therefore the ensuing chaos was her fault. Although she seemed to despise violence, she would resort to it under certain circumstances. When the Master threatened the Doctor, Tegan immediately threw a knife at him.

Despite the strong front she adopted, she was actually quite insecure. This manifested itself most strongly in her inability to firmly decide whether she wanted to stay onboard the TARDIS. Even when she seemed most resolute in her determination to go, she quickly reversed herself. On both occasions when she left the TARDIS, it was the Doctor's act of dematerializing the TARDIS — and not her own unwavering desire to go — which firmly separated the two. Seeing through Tegan's false bravado, the Doctor encouraged her to find her inner strength with the words, "Brave heart, Tegan."

I swear Tegan was put in the TARDIS as an example of all the grumpy gits who would whine their way through space and time. At times I quite like her but for the majority, and she is on fine form in this story, I just want to punch her in the face

Tegan in this didn't do much to change the opinion I have of her from the audios. She moans ... a lot. I think I would have been quite happy if the Doctor had taken her home at the end. Hopefully she'll impress me more in other stories.

She pretty much moans in every story. It's made all the worse by the length of time that she was in the role. I think after a while it got to the point where they just had to keep her as a whiney so and so because the change would have been too drastic but it would have been nice to see her soften and lighten up. I've heard that the character was written that way because that is pretty much how the actress is, though obviously that could just be rumours, though there are lots of accounts of her not being nice and she is even a bit of a b!tch on audio commentaries and whatnot, like on the Mara box set towards Matthew Waterhouse.

I don't mind her too much. I think a lot of the reasons behind why she is the way she is are explained, either in the show or in the audios and books, and while I would prefer she was a bit nicer and more happy at times, I don't mind when she moans either. I can see why lots of people don't like her though. I've also heard that she isn't very nice in real life.

Tegan... Hmm... Well I don't really like her. A little like me, moans a lot and in every single episode, I find her a little tedious.

I have to agree with Exterminate though! At times I really really just want to punch her in the face!

She's not one of my favourite characters, but there are stories where her character works a lot better than others - Snakedance, for instance.  Her wingeing can get a bit much, though.

It's the whingeing that gets me too! As Nyki said, there are times when the character works quite well, but she is so sour faced for most of the time that it is hard to see past it even when there is a great bit of characterisation going on

She isn't very nice is she? Definately my least favourite companion so far. I suppose though on the plus side there was more actual 'character' to her than some of the others I have seen like Susan for example. Like everyone else, its the moodiness that puts me off

Agree with what everyone else has said about her continual whining and pouting. What most annoys me about her though, by this stage of her time with the Doctor, is that she's there entirely by choice.

Okay, so at first she'd wandered into the TARDIS by mistake, got whisked off to Logopolis before she knew what was happening and was just staying with the Doctor until he could finally manage to steer the TARDIS well enough to get her to where she wanted to be. So you could understand her not being entirely happy.

But at the end of Time Flight she finally got there. Then, after running into the Doctor again in Ark Of Infinity, she chose to come back and travel with him again, but she still did nothing but whine and act like she didn't want to be there.

If she really hated being in the TARDIS so much, why come back?

I think the Dame is right. If she doesn't want to be there, which is always how she appears, then she should have just buggered off. Same for the actress, who never seems to have anything nice to say about the experience.

Very true. I've read a couple of interviews with her, and it seems like she was pretty much playing herself. Hardly seems to have a good word to say about anyone or anything.

She doesn't come off very well in real life and people associated with the show don't speak particularly highly of her. I can't see much difference between her and the character to be honest, though I don't know if it was purpously written that way or it just came through in the performance
