Story number 4 is upon us and this week it is the turn of the Fourth Doctor in Sarah Jane's final regular appearance in the Classic Series in The Hand Of Fear. When the TARDIS lands on Earth in a quarry, the Doctor and Sarah are caught in a mining explosion. Sarah is found clutching what appears to be a fossilised hand, buried in 150 million-year-old strata. Analysis shows the hand to be silicon-based and inert, but when Sarah begins to act as if possessed, the Doctor suspects that it may still be alive...
The Hand of Fear was the second story of Season 14. It was perhaps most significant for being Elisabeth Sladen's final story as a member of the regular cast of Doctor Who.
The Hand of Fear was originally intended for the 1976 six-part slot that was taken by The Seeds of Doom. This was very different tale in which the hand was an advance guard, preparing the way for an alien army. However, the script was not ready and so it was delayed and later, rewritten. The next story will be revealed on Sunday 10th July

YES I can actually vote on this straight away 'cause I've seen it not long ago! First classic episode I watched and it was awesome! Gonna give it 5/5 cause yeah it's just brilliant and it's one of the only classic ones I've watched all 4 parts in one go cause it's easy going and just a pretty good story line!

Yea I think a lot of people will have seen it and might have it stored because it aired so recently so it was a good thing it came out so soon.

It's not very long since I saw it (not when it was aired, though) but I don't mind at all "having to" watch it again. I'll wait till after the rewatch to rate it, though.

I gave it a four - I didn't think the bits on Kastria were quite as good as the rest, but the whole thing was pretty impressive.

I'm going with a five. It was a great story with a good villain and a great, but sad ending. It was a tiny bit predictable but it didn't take the fun out of it and it suddenly makes the stuff from School Reunion make more sense, which is a nice little tie in

This gets a four from me. I've always really enjoyed the story and think the ending with Tom and Lis was brilliant. It loses a mark though for the giveaway opening and Sarah being possessed yet again.

I'm giving this a four. I would have probably given another half a point if it were possible. Overall a very enjoyable story with a good, fast advancing plot and some great performances all round. Add onto that the emotional farewell to Sarah Jane and it makes for a great story. A couple of things that niggled at me though...
-The male version of Eldrad just wasn't as good as the female. -Episode 4 overall is just a lot weaker for me, with the exception of Sarah Janes departure scenes, though this is mainly due to the male Eldrad. -Some of the stuff to do with the nuclear power plant is laughable, though we obviously know more about them now, so that could just be put down to lack of knowledge, though stuff like having the RAF strike against it is a bit much. -The cliffhanger to ep3 is pants
They are only tiny niggles, but enough for me to take a point off

I'm going with a 4 as well - would have been 4 and half if possible. Like Saber, I much preferred the female Eldrad - the male one was, for want of a better word, naff. She was believable as a malevolent character, whereas him I just didn't buy at all. Really let down the last episode. As did the way he 'tripped' over the scarf - I'm sure that could have been a bit more convincing. Some of the characters at the power plant irritated me a little, at least at first. This may be to do with how acting has changed over the years though as initially they seemed a little over acted (yes Watson & Miss Jackson I'm looking at you) - once I got past that/used to it they were fine. I loved both TB & LS though, and the ending was really well done. The story moved at a nice pace for the most part & up until they moved to Kastria, Eldrad was an interesting character (although maybe a bit of mystery about his/her true motives would have been nice). All in all a good solid story

My thoughts exactly. the ending is truly wonderful though, even moreso now.

I went with a 5. I have always really enjoyed this story and I would say it was definately in my top 5 stories featuring Sarah Jane. The story is solid and draws you in well and it has some great sets and designs and the acting (with the exception of Mr shouty Eldrad) was all spot on.

I utterly, utterly love this story. I think the only problem I have with this story is that it is SJ's last story! Tom Baker never quite had the magic with anyone else that he had with Liz Sladen and it is perfectly encapsulated in this story. There is tension throughout and the story is a really novel idea. This story is also special because I think it is the quintessential Tom Baker performance. If ever anyone who hasn't seen the 4th Doctor needed a story to drop into, I would suggest this one. Again, after this story, he never quite (consistently) hit the same heights again. There were flashes of genius and he was always watchable, but this really marked the end of an era in more ways than one. A solid 5 all the way for me
