Ok, I know that from a real world perspective Elisabeth Sladen had decided to move on, but why doesn't the Doctor go back for her once he has done whatever needed to be done on Gallifrey? Perhaps it all makes perfect sense if you have seen the stories that follow, but I haven't so I don't understand why he didn't go back for Sarah Jane once the story was done.
Also, why isn't she allowed to go with him? I thought humans had been to Gallifrey before. Wasn't Ace supposed to go to Time Lord school if the show had continued?

I've heard the theory that they changed the rules after Leela accompanied the Doctor in Invasion of Time. Of course, Jamie and Zoe had been on Gallifrey, but they got sent straight home. Then again, the Doctor says he "can't" take her, not that he's "not allowed" to. Probably the same thing, but not necessarily.
In general, the Doctor's not very good at going back, as he says in School Reunion (though the Seventh Doctor is something of an exception). He never even went back for Susan, despite his promise.

Didnt Zoe and Jamie get mind wiped? If that is the case perhaps he was trying to save her from a similar fate or something?

Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and The Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

I think Nyki is probably right about the Doctor not going backwards. If you listen to when they do the 'Don't forget me' speech, the way the Doctor says it back and the look on his face makes me certain that he knows, at least at that point, that they won't be seeing each other again for whatever reason, either because whatever he is being called to Gallifrey for he may not come back from, or because he just won't go looking, but I think the clue is in how he says what he says.

Its a bit of an odd one to answer really, because in reality he couldnt, but I do like to think that if the option was there with the actress, the Doctor would have 'gone back', so to speak.

All good and valid reasons. It was probably a silly question in the first place, but more than anything else I wanted to know if in the show he had ever tried to, or mentioned going back for her

It's been a while since I watched, but doesn't he say in School Reunion that he couldn't go back for her, like in an emotional sort of way?
Anyone seen it lately who might know for sure?

I've just rewatched School Reunion. He says very explicitly that humans weren't allowed on Gallifrey at the time (implying that it changed later). He also talks about how he can't look back because he can't take watching while people he loves get old and die (characteristically, he doesn't actually say "loves", but it's obvious that's what he's stopped himself saying).
