I'm so glad you enjoyed it - it really is a cracking little tale (I make no bones, it is my favourite story). Graeme Harper must take a lot of the credit for his wonderful, rapid direction

Grumpy old me here! I think caves is hugely overrated, I like it, but don't think it's even on the same sheet as Pyramids of Mars in unadulterated fun. I am basing my opinions on rewatches, when I was a child I loved the fifth Doctor, but on rewatch I find his episodes the least rewarding, they made an error in casting an already famous actor to replace Tom IMHO, an error that they haven't copied with the casting of Matt Smith recently. I find a lot of JNT reign sterile and unengaging, and the Davison years sum this up for me. I wish I could see what others seein his performance but I just don't, he's good in Caves but it's too late, if you get me?
I agree with you to an extent about the JNT era. Moreso his last two or three years though. He started off with so many great ideas and views, but I think in the end he had simply worn himself out but wouldnt give up the job he had wanted his entire life. I really love the Davison years, but I love his take on the role and I think he manages to make even some of the less great stories a lot more watchable. Oh My God!!! Im not a massive follower of the classic series but I watched this story last night and I think it might be my favourite ever. And thats including the new stuff. There wasnt a moment when I was waiting for something to happen. The story moved along with a great pace and the acting from everyone involved was top notch. By the end of it I was just sat with my mouth open. Its easily one of the best Who stories I have seen written and it has inspired me to watch more. For the whole four episodes, despite the length, I was never feeling like it dragged on or was using filler to move the story along. So impressed with this story. Was a nice touch with the companions at the end too. Also couldnt stop laughing at Peri's boobs just as he was about to regenerate. Talk about getting in the way Glad you enjoyed it. It really is a cracking little story and you should defo get stuck in to some of the other classics

Best. Story. EVER.
I highly recommend listening to Peter Davison & Nicola Bryant on the commentary - just for the regen bit where he mentions how he's acting his socks off, but everyone's looking down Peri's top!

I like Black Orchid but it always sort of felt like filler. Like it was a last minute thing to fill a gap. Perhaps it was. Still quite good though

An interesting point about Black Orchid - it's the only story after The Highlanders in 1967 to have no SF content apart from the actual time travel.

This is definitely my favorite story for the fifth Doctor. It's the first story where Davison really feels like the Doctor. Before, he could be an ordinary guy whose strong and brave and awesome, but a normal guy nonetheless. In Caves of Androzani he felt like the Doctor to me. He was very flippant, and that could've been part of it. Funnily enough, Davison said this was the first story where he really knew how to play the part. It shows.

Today, the Kaled race is ended, consumed in a fire of war. But, from its ashes will rise a new race. The supreme creature. The ultimate conqueror of the universe. The Dalek!

I've always had a blind spot for this story (just like I have for "Dalek"). Everyone else raves about it and I can't see why. The looking and talking to camera is just horrible, and theatrical in a bad way. And the Doctor is probably at his most passive, not really taking any side, or helping anyone, or solving any problem, with even the admittedly good first episode cliff-hanger being resolved by outside intervention. He wanders around, manages to get himself and Peri poisoned, wanders around some more, and then realises he should probably just leave and let both fairly unsympathetic sides get on with the business of killing each other. It reminds me a bit of some First Doctor stories where he would arrive, wander off, and then spend the other episodes simply trying to get back to the TARDIS. Gotta love Peri, though (eyes mist over)
