Vicki, later known as Cressida, met the First Doctor on the planet Dido and came to join the crew of the Doctor's TARDIS. Vicki was born on Earth in 2479. Vicki's mother had died at an early age and Vicki's father took a job in a new colony on the planet Astra, leaving Earth in 2493 AD. The ship transporting the colonists, the UK-201 crashlanded on Dido. Most of the passengers lived, but one night Bennett, unknown to her, murdered all the survivors other than Vicki as well as all but two of native Didonians, where she was later found by The Doctor, Ian and Barbara. The Doctor, perhaps because he missed his recently-departed grand-daughter, asked Vicki to come with him and the others, thus making her the first companion that the Doctor was seen to willingly invite to travel in the TARDIS. Once Vicki left Dido with the others, she was keen for adventure. Vicki was often bored with the travelling to their destinations, and the less adventurous moments of their lives. Whether teasing, or merely undiplomatic, Vicki had a knack of saying the wrong thing to Barbara, despite their having a close relationship. Vicki's youth and spirit of adventure enabled her to save the travellers from dangeron occasion and she also had considerable analytical and technical skills. Despite her bravado, Vicki was terrified of heights. It would appear that most of Vicki's skills and knowledge were based in science, but she also had some historical knowledge. When the travellers materialised on Earth during the Trojan War, she displayed her knowledge of Greek heroes and the Trojan Horse. While in Troy, Vicki called herself Cressida and met Troilus, a young Trojan. They fell in love, and Vicki left the Doctor to be with him. Their tale would later be written as a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer and as a play by William Shakespeare. Please feel free to use this thread to discuss Vicki.

I generally don't mind Vicki too much, but based on this story alone I think she comes off as a bit too naive and gullible, especially when compared to her actions and reactions to things in later stories, though I suppose that could be put down to the growth she experienced travelling in the TARDIS.

Yea she does come off as perhaps a little dim in her first story. It seems, to me at least, that the whole Bennet/Koquillion thing is very obvious, so the fact that she doesn't realise any of it is a bit odd

I don't dislike Vicki, but I do find it hard to like her too. She is a nice enough character but she is boring and the opportunity for development is pretty much at nil. Most of the time it felt like she was making up the numbers

She isn't particularly popular throughout fandom, though I think it isn't because she did anything particularly wrong, but more because she didn't do anything at all. I like her but she is sort of inconsequential.

I've always quite liked Vicki, although I'd agree she isn't the best developed of the companions. As I've said elsewhere, I think it's quite weird she didn't know about the murder.

I think given more of a backstory then she could have potentially been great, but it doesn't really seem like they wanted anything more than to fill a gap, which I suppose she did well enough

Me too - as she appeared unaware of the exit through the floor in Bennett's room, why didn't she query how Koquillion could have gone without coming out the way he went in? There didn't appear to be another door anywhere. I guess it could be part of the fear he'd created in her, maybe she was just too scared to see the obvious. That aside, I didn't dislike her.

The ship must have been a lot bigger than just the common area and Bennett's room, considering it had been carrying a crew and passengers. I think we can assume there are other bits and other exits.

Yeah you're probably right - just that they kind of highlighted it a little with the 'where did Bennett & the Doctor go?' bit. Maybe just me reading too much into that though

The thing is, after this story I wouldnt really say she strikes me as Niave or gullible again, so I think it was just thrown in for use here but isnt really a character trait as such

From what I have seen of her she seems harmless enough and though she isn't the most brilliantly written character, she is never really that dislikeable either

This is pretty much how I feel about her. It's a shame she didn't get more of a characterisation, but I think that may be down in part to Maureen O'Brian not wanting to be there. From what I know it was no secret and so they probably didn't want to waste time developing someone who they knew wanted to get out as soon as possible. Thats my thinking anyway

I'm still undecided about her tbh. I sort of like her and sort of don't. Based on this story she was ok, but I think I need to see more before making my mind up fully
