The whole point of the movie was to work as a backdoor pilot in order to get the show back on air, but after seeing the final version Fox decided they would rather not bother. Even so, it did prove that an audience was still there and still very much interested in having it back. Do you think if this hadn't have been made that we may have got it back on our screens earlier or do you think that without the hype around it and the fans showing they want more, that without it we may not have got the show back at all.

We can never really know for sure, of course, so this is more personal speculation than anything else.

It's a bit hard to say really. On the one hand it stopped the show being turned over to American hands for a series, which is something I think in hindsight we should all be grateful for, but on the other hand it definately showed that there was still an interest in the franchise and I think though it took a while, that would almost certainly have been factored into the BBC's decision to bring it back

Um... what PP said, really.  I think an ongoing version from the same team would have been a bad thing.

We will never really know how things would have worked out had it not been made, but I am sort of glad it didn't do too well because the way things ended up was pretty great I think

If anything it probably convinced the BBC that something like this shouldn't be left up to people who are just out to make a buck, so though it took them years, they did it themselves and they did it properly.

And made a buck
