Full marks from me. Brilliant first outing for Pertwee, an excellent new companion, the Brig, Autons and crazy country folk. What a story

Find this a tricky one to mark. The first couple of episodes I wasn't so crazy about. Some of the minor characters were cliched and unconvincing, with corny dialogue to boot. Also someone seemed to have taken the decision to direct it like a 40s spy serial with a soundtrack to match. Also, perhaps a minor plot point, but is it complete coincidence that the Doctor lands the exact place and time as the spheres do? With these things in mind I was ready to give it only a 3. On the plus side, the Autons and Nestenes were brilliantly realised and are genuinely creepy. Definitely one of the best stories effect-wise. And the minor characters and soundtrack that annoyed me in the first two episodes were also largely missing from the last two episodes. So I would give it 5/5 for the second half and 3/5 for the first half. Split the difference. 4/5
