Elizabeth "Liz" Shaw was a civilian member of UNIT. She did much field work and upon one occasion became acquainted with the Third Doctor.

From then on, Liz helped Doctor while at UNIT. This often involved her winding up in the same life-threatening situations as the Doctor. She continued to work occasionally at UNIT even after leaving their regular employment. She was an accomplished scientist and an expert on meteorites. She had degrees in several disciplines, including physics and medicine.

Liz was drafted from the University of Cambridge by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart as a scientific advisor to UNIT. (Lethbridge-Stewart did not know at that time that the Doctor had arrived on Earth and would ably serve as UNIT's scientific advisor.) Skeptical at first of UNIT's remit to defend the Earth against alien invasions, she changed her mind when she encountered the newly-regenerated Doctor and became involved in defeating the plans of the Nestene Consciousness and its animated plastic servants, the Autons.

Liz's extensive training paled in comparison to the Doctor's own knowledge of the universe and scientific principles far beyond that of Earth's. Eventually, she resigned from UNIT and returned to Cambridge.

She reportedly told the Brigadier that all the Doctor really needed was "someone to pass him his test tubes and tell him how brilliant he was." This feeling probably contributed to her decision to return to her own research.

Liz holds the distinction of being the only full time companion to never take a trip in the TARDIS

My favourite companion of all. I absolutely love Liz Shaw and I hate that she was only around for the one season. On the plus side though she does manage to be in four of the strongest strories of the era, so at least she didn't have to go through a rubbish plot before leaving. It's a shame Caroline John didn't enjoy her experience there very much but for some reason a lot of people seem not to have. At least she speaks fondly of it now. I am pretty sure it will never happen but I would love to see her back

A great character, combining Barbara's emotional maturity and Zoe's near intellectual equality with the Doctor.  I agree, a great shame she only made four stories.

Love her. What a good strong, fiesty, no nonsense woman to have on board. I think Nyki's description of being a cross between Barbara and Zoe is spot on. It's a shame she only had a small run, but I suppose it was better than having her around for ages and eventually turning into another screamer

I really wasn't sure what to expect with Liz. I thought she would end up being some snooty cow. I don't really know why, but that was what I was expecting. I suppose she is a tad snooty, but in a 'strong female' sense rather than in a 'I'm better than you' sense. I suppose in the time, being a woman in what was a predominantly mans world meant she had to be strong and tough and hold her own and I really warmed to her in this story

I have always thought Liz to be a great character, and I think Roranicus is right in that part of that comes from the fact that her tenure was so short and so didn't really have a chance to be watered down. I think that TC is also right in that she very much stood out against type and wasn't a typical woman of her time

I think she is a good companion and she plays off the Doctor really well. They are too people you really would expect to rub each other up the wrong way and I suppose in many ways they do, but it just works. I'd like to see her again for sure.

I love Liz. It's a shame she is so often overlooked. It's probably down to the fact she only did four stories, but Caroline John put in a brilliant performance every single time (especially in Inferno)
