He doesn't seem to be 'officially' listed as one anywhere as far as I could see, but I think this is so easily disputed given the number of his appearances and how closely he worked with the Doctor. Do you think that he should be classed as such or just as a recurring character?

River Song, for example, plays much the same role as he did. Random, spread out appearances (though admittedly she does do the travelling part a lot too) and yet is considered by most to be a companion. But if travelling with the Doctor is what elevates you to companion status, then why does the BBC list people like Jackson and Astrid as companions?

What do you all think?

And for that matter, just to add, where does that even leave Liz?

I guess people like Jackson and Astrid were listed as 'companions' because it was just them for a whole episode? Haven't seen that much of the classic series so correct me where wrong but did the Brig appear alongside the Doctor just by himself?

I don't see River as a 'companion' though, and she's never been listed in the main titles has she, so hmm... Yeah I don't think I see the Brig as a companion but maybe because I haven't seen enough episodes with him in...

My personal take on this (which differs a bit from the official listing) is that a companion is someone who's either:

a) travelled in the TARDIS as part of the "crew" (if that's the right word) as opposed to being given lifts from A to B, or

b) Consistently helped the Doctor over multiple stories.

I'd definitely count the Brig, Liz and River as companions, as well as Sara Kingdom, Sergeant Benton, Captain Yates and even arguably Jackie Tyler (jury's out on that).  I wouldn't count Grace, Astrid or Jackson, since they don't fulfil either category.

I have seen hardly anything of the Brig, but I had always assumed he would have been classed as a companion. He was hardly a guest star with the ammount of stories he was in and he aided the Doctor in his adventures, so I figure he should be given companion status

This is pretty much where I stand on the issue.

It may not be official, but I have always classed the Brig as a companion. He does what most other companions do, and does it better most times, he just doesn't really do the travelling part.

Personally, I would say a companion would be someone who travels with the Doctor with the intention of helping him on his adventures. For me, the Brig wouldnt normally meet those requirements but he worked so often with the Doctor, and filled the role of companion so often, that it would be hard to not consider him to be a companion.

I would call him a companion for sure. Not a conventional companion, but a companion all the same
