I really think it is time to do away with them now. The long, season long ones at any rate. I didn't love this latest story but one positive I can take from it is that it showed that the one off, dip in and out stories are far better and easier to watch as well as being better for bringing in new viewers. It seeme like forever since I was able to sit and just watch an episode without having to work my brain too hard to keep up with the plot and make sure that I am not missing anything. I don't mind the light arcs that you don't have to pay too much attention to, but the show is starting to have more of a 'soap' feel to it. I don't know about everyone else, but good or bad, I would much prefer a season of stand alone stories like this one.

I love the long story arcs!   Smiley  I think the episodes are much more interesting when there's a connection.  This is my kind of Sci-Fi though, I love the timey-wimey complex stuff that makes me think and speculate on what's going to happen next.  I don't mind *good* standalone episodes (like "The Doctor's Wife"), but the non-Moffat episodes this season I've found to be just plain annoying.

I don't mind small links int he stories, like back in the day with Bad Wolf, etc, but I think at the moment it's all becoming to self referential and confusing. They need to put more emphasis on good stories and adventures instead of concentrating so heavily on twisty plots and timey wimey nonsense. If you look back over the last 6 years at the very best stories DW has produced and they are strong, stand alone adventures with a beginning, middle and end. It's better that way I think

Do away with them I say. My favourite part about tuning in has always been wondering where the Doctor will go next. Will we see a planet, who will he meet, what aliens are there, etc. I know we still get to see him off on his travels but the excitement of it has gone and I feel a large part of that is because the show is getting bogged down with story arcs. Every adventure now seems to be part of the larger story and is only in place to move it along and not because the crew just happened to be there when something was going down. Loose connections are fine, but when nearly every single episode is built around one story it becomes too much

I quite enjoy occasional arcs linking stories, like the Key to Time in the classic series, but this is going on too long and taking over.  I agree, it's time to go back to having some one-off stories for a change.

I don't mind the arcs too much, but I think I would prefer a return to single adventures as apposed to having everything fit part of the bigger story.

I am with DAK, I love the arc, waiting to see what's going to happen, and trying to figure it out. However, I think that this season's arc could be handled a little better; a little more clarity, and more stand alone episodes maybe.
