I'm fine with spiders, bugs and snakes but dogs scare the bejezers out of me, not helped by the fact that I've been bitten twice now Cry

Heights I'm fine with but you couldn't get me to go up any kind of ladder for love nor money these days.  I used to be a lighting tech and have never had an accident or problem with them that has caused this phobia so I really have no idea why I hate them now, lol.  Not very keen on crowds of people as I've got older either and tend to avoid them as much as possible.

I am absolutely ridiculous with the things that frighten me. I will list them Tongue

Wasps - When I was about 16 I was out jogging and I was running through some woods. I headbutted a nest as I was running without realising and got 48 stings. If anyone had seen me they would have thought I was a pervert because I stripped naked in the middle of the woods to get them out of my clothes. They were everywhere and ever since just seeing one gets me really anxious.

Fish - I dont even know why, but fish terrify me. I cant look at them, cant eat them, nothing. I love to go fidshing with my brothers, but if I catch anything I run away while they deal with it Grin

Hot Things - I have this overwhelming fear of being burned and badly scarred, so I dont like holding really hot mugs of coffee, or taking things out of the oven or anything. Cant even have really hot showers, they have to be lukewarm.

Finally, its not so much a phobia, but I hate when the button pops on the kettle. I always think its going to make the kettle explode in my face, so I always have to stand far away until it has stopped.

So there you have it. Now you all know im a massive freak Tongue

Dollys/clowns/Ventriliquist dummies and A bit of a weird one, but I can't stand tightly blown balloons. When I was really young, my great uncle used to blow them up in my face until they burst.

Um, I suppose heights...and, um skipping ropes, you know the ones being used and moving fast....though im getting over them both Smiley

I think Id agree with what the Moff teaches, I am afraid of the unknown Wink

Oh and I appear to get scared by bugs and spiders and fluttery things, but while im not fond of them its more the flutteryness in my peripheral vision...its wierd but makes me jump about like im scared... Wink

But im a complete wimp and dont watch horror movies cause i have a bit of an overactive imagination and always imagine things behind like the bathroom door...  Undecided

Manholes - I refuse to stand on them anymore in case the lid is loose. To be fair, I did fall down one a couple years ago.

Other one is much weirder: I can't stand being able to hear people talking outside. I have to turn the volume up on the TV/radio or leave the room til I can't hear them anymore.

Phobia wise - heights and water Sad

Hate wasps with a passion due to allergy but not really scared of them. Used to be terrified of spiders but unless they're roaming around the house at night/or on me tend to leave them alone. Grin

My only true phobia is heights.

I also don't watch Horror movies because they freak me out and I don't enjoy them at all.  Suspense is fine and some gore is ok, but not true horror films.  I also have trouble with war movies ever since my brother went into the Army and did three tours in Iraq.  He's home now and fine and out of the military, but I still can't watch war movies - it's still too close to home.

Well I think it's safe to say that...so far anyway...The Doc is the biggest wimp Cheesy Only teasing :-*

According to that advert ( can't remember what it's for ) we're born with only two fears - falling and loud noises - the rest we learn. Out of curiousity has anyone had help to overcome a phobia?

Oh and I forgot one of mine - fear of small spaces Sad

I guess it is possible to overcome phobias, becuase I always always used to hate flying with a passion! I would never get on a plane, until I went to America in the summer, I'm still not great but I'm no way near as scared as I used to be, so I guess just like being exposed to whatever you're scared of for a long time kinda helps! Cos to America it was a 7 hour flight, but since then it doesn't bother me so much  Smiley

Well fear of the unknown covers a multitude of sins I suppose. And to a degree I can see how confronting your fear could help - I guess it depends on how it is handled. Undecided

Yeah, I guess if it is in a situation where you're genuinely doing something becuase you want to, not because you feel like you have to it is possible to overcome it. Another thing that kinda scares me is going away from home, (okay, sounds odd and pathetic but it is true), but for me it's just more a fear of what could happen, and just the whole idea of being in a completely different place, but for me, not saying it'll work for everyone, the more I face that certain fear the easier it comes and the less scary it is.

I think there's a big difference between a fear of the unknown/known. Being fearful of flying for example if you've never flown before is to my mind quite natural and usually overcome once experienced. The fear only tends to remain if linked to other phobias like claustrophobia/heights etc.

A fear based on a bad experience is usually what culminates into a phobia and is therefore more difficult to be rid of since the desire to not repeat the incident is the fear not the actual object that instigated it. A small space is incapable of wishing me ill yet I fear it. Not every wasp in the world has intentions to kill me yet I treat them as if they could. ::)Why are so many people scared of spiders? Are the entire species out to get us or is it simply the association of seeing one that links to that time one fell on us triggering the flight/fight response?

Fascinating subject  Cool And I will shut up now I promise Wink

Haha....far too easy to go off on a tangent in such a thread Smiley For example no one has said dying or ghosts  - two topics that nearly always crop up in lists of things that scare us Huh?

Ghosts, now that could be a whole new topic itself! Are there such things as ghosts? And the fear of death? Now for me that can be influenced by waht you believe. I'm not really scared of dying and being a Christian I know that I have eternal life (Sorry jargony)! Yeah it all depends on what you belive in

I don't necessarily think a fear of dying is indictative of  a non belief in something after it...more often than not it's the how that people fret about.

As for ghosts... Lips Sealed Smiley

True... The how I die is kinda  Huh? but maybe because I'm still young (17) I don't really wonder too much about it. Okay like I say so many times I just hope I die happy. Ah sounds so cheesy, yet true. The fear of death, (makes me think about the Scrubs episode in Season Cool... yeah...

Ghosts... Not scared of ghosts but I think I would be pretty creeped out to be in a graveyard at night!

Spiders mostly but all insects and small flying creatures. Bit morbid but death. Errrrrrr.... Crowds! I can't stand crowds. That's really all I can think of right now.
