They for me were the most confusing part of the whole plot, aside from the bee man. I just had no idea why they were there at all. I just assumed at first they were on holiday or something, but then they started making calls to the president and whatnot. It just didn't make sense. Anyone able to shed some light?

I have absolutely no idea. I have seen this story several times and I still have no idea who they are or why they needed to speak to the president

I always thought that one of the American actors was quite famous and well known and so they just wrote a random part to get him into the story, which is why it doesn't really make sense. I'm sure I read that somewhere

That's what I thought too. Were they both real Americans? I know one of them was for sure, the one with the baseball hat I think, but not sure about the other one.

Stubby Kaye (the one who made the initial phone-call) was quite a big name - he was American, but appeared a lot in Britain, and I think he may have lived here.  I don't know if the other was American, but I suspect not.  They were definitely one of the the more random elements in the story.

The first time I watched this I spent the whole time waiting for the president to show up or something. What a random bit of story to add in at the very beginning and then never return to

Perhaps it was just one of those plot points that was meant to be readdressed but never was. Maybe some scenes got cut or something. Their inclusion though seems very strange and pointless
