Anyone else get shades of The Curse of Fenric here, where the Doctor had to destroy Ace's faith in him?

Oh yes! Smiley

Also the episode had a reverse 'The Curse of Fenric' theme to it. Instead of needing your faith to keep the monsters away, like the Haemovores in Fenric, in this one you had to do the exact opposite.

COF is what came to mind for me, too. I would hope that it was a nod to it though rather than lifting that particular element and hoping people wouldn't notice.

To be honest I'm really surprised this even worked. Amy must be quite gullible. As much as the Doctor may have believed it, it seemed very much a way to save her more than actually being true

This is what I thought. It just seemed like something he made up on the spot to save her. Whether he believed it or not, if I was Amy I wouldn't have been convinced because I would have thought that was exactly what he was trying to do

That's what I was thinking when I watched. I was sure that it would end differently because she wouldnt believe him or what he was saying. How strong was her faith in him anyway if it can be called into question and dispelled so easily?

This is exactly what I was thinking. All that stuff about 'the Doctor lies' which means she should know better, coupled with about 15 years of having him in her life and believing in him and then he gives one speech and all that gets undone? Unlikely

Yes, when he did it to Ace, it took a sustained onslaught of insults and abuse before it worked.

The only way that I can see as to how it worked is that Amy already had some doubt in her mind. Plus, intense emotional moments can cause you to make some very quick decisions or judgments.
